Mr. Donald Ernst Foreword With this 1957 publication of THE MIRROR we have attempted a depiction of most activities in which the school has par- ticipated during the 1956-57 term. In these remaining pictures are the joys, sorrows, fun, and experiences we ventured into. As we grow older we hope this book will remind us of the school so dear to our hearts. The Seniors Dedication The tipping of a hat symbolizes honor- ing or paying tribute to noted persons or deeds. In turn, we, the class of 1957, dedicate this yearbook to every member of our football team who bestowed upon us the honor of achieving the first Champion Football Team in our high school days so successfully and with so much pleasure. ADVISOR - Lawrence W. Gulden 1 Senior Class History I 1953 - 54 XVe entered the familiar premises of Biglerville High School in September of '55 as fun-loving Freshmen. We were just beginning the long journey to our goal as Seniors. We were active in sports, band, Honor Society, activities and plays. Through this exciting we visited County Court House and also the State Capitol. The class elected Richard Fink as president and Lawrence W. Gulden was our advisor. II 1954 - 55 We returned in '54 with joan Tate as president. We sold candy at noon time and during athletic events to raise money for the junior-Senior Prom and our Senior trip. III 1955 - 56 Last year we entered Biglerville High School as jolly Juniors. October ll was a big day for us, for we received our class rings. We proudly showed them off to everyone. Our projects this year included selling hot dogs at football games, sponsoring food sales, dances and skating parties. Our big event last year was our presentation of the junior-Senior Prom f A Night in Fairyland. j We chose Joyce Ebbert as our class president. IV 1956 - S7 With much pride and joy we reach the summit - Sophisticated Seniors. Our class consisted of 80 energetic people. Freda Warner was elected class president, with a final effort to raise funds for that memorable event - our Senior trip. XVe sold 900 lbs. of candy, 60 jackets, gallons and gallons of coke and coffee to wash down donuts. We are looking forward for the big night when we receive our diplomas, but the memory of all our years of enjoyable times we have gained from B. H. S. will never be forgotten. We wish to extend our appreciation to those who have made these years pleasant, and to classes which follow we wish wisdom, happi- ness, and friendship as we have gained from our Alma Mater. Your decisions now are to be made for your futilre success in life. How will you spend it? With the speaker's words ringing in my ears, my mind wanders to the future for my classmates and me. What would the future hold? As I glanced over the class I tried to visualize what the future would hold for us. This was my dream. I went to pick up the milk this morning in the damp morning air and I thought of how early our faithful milkman, JOHN STEINER had to get up to deliver our good WRIGHT-TYPE MILK from WRIGHT'S SUPER DAIRY. Suddenly I received a blow on the head from the pap? boy and guess whose menace it was? None other than JOYCE EBBERT OSTEL'S. I hardly got the door closed when the phone rang. It was FREDA WARNER FURNEY who wanted me to go shopping with her to pick up a few things for the shower of NANCY DAVIS, who is marrying TOM LEEDY, a wealthy oil tycoon, in the near future. I took a quick glance at the morning paper. THE PARKER GAZETTE, pub- lished by BARBARA PARKER, before starting my daily routine, and to my astonishment the headlines read, BOYD SMITH BRE KS INDIANAPOLIS SPEEDWAY RECORD. As I read on, great credit was given to the designer of the racer, JACK HORACE PALMER, a brilliant upcoming designer of the future. I was interrupted by the ringing of the doorbell, and as I opened the door the delivery man, GERALD McKINNEY from USILVANOWICZ HANDY DANDY LAUNDRY handed me the week's wash. As I put the clothes away and started on the breakfast dishes, I turned on the radio to listen to BUD BIRGENSMITH'S BREAKFAST CLUB. His guest star was JOYCE STARRY, a top popular singer of the day. Then I shook my new dustless mop, manufactured by BLOCHER AND LOTT MOP COMPANY, and went upstairs to mop. Hours later, I looked at the clock and was terrified to see that I had only a half-hour to get dressed and go shopping with Freda. With much difficulty, I was ready when she arrived. We called a taxi-copter cab service built by the CRUM AIRCRAFT COR- PORATION. When the cab arrived and we climbed in, we greeted the driver, HELEN REX, and headed for BOB DARON'S DINER. After a lovely luncheon we left the diner and started down town to shop. Our first stop was at MADAME REXROTH'S STYLE SHOPPE. She greeted me, and with the clap of her hands her graceful models, CATHERINE DAVIS, MARY ALEXANDER, and SHIRLEY MARTIN, appeared and displayed unique creations. As we strolled down the street we caught a glimpse of the Mayor's stream- ing black Cadillac cruising by and who do you suppose was seated by his honor, the distinguished BRYANT QBOBJ ROE, and he was smoking a BOWER cigar. The chauffeur was staunch, white-collared RUSSELL BOLEN. We passed the BRICKER AND BROUGH HOUSE OF WACKSX' At the corner we met ANN DEARDORFF and NELSON WEBER, the recently engaged couple. Suddenly a truck rounded the corner from the ranch of WINNIE and CLAIR FETTERS and headed for the racing stables at CLARK'S RACE TRACK. The driver, KEN WAGAMAN, had aboard the truck fodr beautiful, Winfet stal- ions, a new breed of thoroughbred horses. The horses were to be ridden at the NAYLOR DERBY by champion jockey, GEORGE FLICKINGER. After a little chat with Snooks and Ann, we proceeded on up the street and passed BABE and JIM'S GYMNASIUM. We went to PATSY SHEAFFER'S DISC MART to get JANE PLANK'S latest hit, URASPBERRY HILL, written by JOAN SWAYZE. Next door we visit- ed HARTZEL'S PRIVATE DETECTIVE AGENCY, where LOIS QGROUPJ Page forty-eight HARTZEL was his secretary. We had just stepped inside when a squad car screeched to a halt and out stepped JANET HOLLABAUGH, a policewoman, to assist the agency in a baffling case. We had one more place to go, which was ANNALEE'S HOUSE FOR BRIDES to buy some last-minute articles for the shower. Finishing our shopping we hailed a cab. We had gone a few blocks when we noticed a glare in the sky and people running down the street. As we rounded the corner we saw smoke and flames leaping rom BOB SHAFER'S T. T. SHOP. We had to wait till the crowd cleared, so we stepped from the cab onto the pave- ment and who should we see but our former classmate, Fire Chief KEN BLATZ- LEY. He told us Bob had been watching the SHILLITO SHOW with his guest star, the well-known opera singer MADAME BARBARA FREED, when he sighted smoke pouring from under a storage room door. Reaching home, I suddenly realized I had just enough time to keep my dental appointment at DR. SMALLWOOD'S. As I rushed in, his receptionist, BETTY KUYKENDALL, told me I was to go right in. After checking my teeth, he found a cavity and filled it with the new miracle drug put out by LONGENECKER AND CUTSHALL'S CHEMICAL WORKS. After that ordeal I finally got home. I was glad to kick off my LINWOOD SHOES, and flop down on my new BRETZMAN SOFA. I had no sooner gotten settled when a car door slammed and I knew it was COLUMBINE BOWERS from NELLIE KANE'S NURSERY SCHOOL with the children. As they came bounding in the door, they handed me the mail. I noticed from the writing on the top letter that it was from my good friend, NANCY ARNOLD, who was touring Europe with LIEUTENANT COMMANDER GORMAN. After dinner was over and I had put the children to bed, I sat down to finish the hair-raising mystery novel written by ANNE MAY. After reading awhile, I got thirsty and went to the kitchen and got a bottle of SHULTZIE-COLA. I heard the door slam and as I walked into the room, there stood my neighbor PAT BUCHER. She had come to tell me that the MENTZER'S, JANNIE and RALPH, had announced the birth of triplets. And also that JIM HARMAN had married an heiress, PRINCESS ELAINE ALTHOFF. I was surprised by the stun- ning news. Then we sat down to watch television. As the picture came in, we saw EUGENE MUSSELMAN demonstrating a new typewriter. After that the an- nouncer, JIM DAUGHENBAUGH, interrupted the program with a new flash that SYLVIA HELLER was the first Earthian to reach the moon. We turned to channel 6000 to view BRENDA PARKER PRESENTS. The play was Love Can Be Beautifulj' starring DORIS ORABELLE SHEAFFER and GARNET LEO TAYLOR. It was directed by DORIS McGLAUGHLIN and pro- duced by GEORGE SMEED. As the play was ending, the phone rang and it was DONNA SLAYBAUGH HEYSER asking me to come to a bull band for the newlyweds, PEGGY WICK- LINE and MARTIN SHENK. I told her I couldn't make it as I was planning a welcome home party for Nobel Peace Award Winner, JOAN TATE. I had invited PATRICIA WARRENFELTZ, BONNIE TAYLOR, and DOROTHY ANTHONY, radio and T. V. columnists, to interview her. Before going to bed I wrote a check for ODOM'S GROCERY STORE. Then I retreated upstairs and slipped into my pajamas and took off my JOYCE SHEAFFER MAKE-UP and set my SWARTZ ALARM CLOCK. It had been a tiring and busy day. I was glad to see and hear about my classmates. The speaking system suddenly gave a loud crack which brought me out of my dream and back to the graduating platform. Page eighty-seven Senior A MODERNIZED NURSERY RHYME Once two diminuitive specimens of the genus homo Ascended a slightly elevated portion of the earth's surface, To obtain a small quantity of that aque- ous mixture composed of hydrogen and oxygen. The puerile representative of this youth- ful pair, being suddenly precipitated to the stony substance toward which all things gravitate, Sustained in consequence thereof a frac- ture of that part of the head known as the cranium. Whereupon his weaker companion, being agitated over the unfortunate state of her fellow traveler, lost her equilibrium, and followed him in his untimely descent.
