Someday we will look back and feel illuminated as we recall our joys and sorrows at this, our Alma Mater. Page four Dedication We, the Class of 1956, dedicate this year- book to all Parents and Teachers who, we feel, have given us the added spark which has enabled us to complete our high school days so successfully and with so much pleasure and happiness. Although we were only in our first lap of the long four years ahead of us, our members were active in sports, band, honor society, activities and plays. This was our way of showing the upperclassmen that we were capable of taking their places in the years to come. During this eventful year we visited the county court house and also the state capitol where we toured the govern- ment buildings and learned how our state government works. The class elected Keith Wolff as president and Mildred A. Walter was our advisor. U 1955-54 We returned the next year to begin our second lap as silly sophomores. We became even more active in the various organizations that the school program offer- ed. That year we chose Sandra Lower as our capable president. Determined to make money for our class treasury we used some of our abundant energy by selling candy and potato chips at noon time and at athletic events. Our treasury increased when we won first prize 015251 in the Booster Parade. III 1954-55 Our class seemed very anxious to return to school our junior year. The reason for this strange action was the fact that we received our class rings on September 20. This was one of the biggest events in our high school life. To raise funds for our treasury we sold hot dogs, soft drinks, and pretzels at games, sponsored dances, and roller skating parties. We are a very artistic or a very lucky class for we captured first prize in the Booster Parade again. The highlight of this year was our presentation of the junior-Senior Prom. The decorations were planned around the theme Beneath the Sea. It was hard work, but we enjoyed every minute of it. Everyone attending seemed to enjoy themselves, and we knew the results were well worth our hard work. IV 1955-56 With light and happy hearts we started down the home stretch as sophisticated seniors. We were then a force of 70 determined people. Sandra Lower was again elected our class president, perhaps because she had shown her skill in this position in our sophomore year. We sold coffee and doughnuts at games, and candy at Christmas in a final effort to make enough money for that long anticipated senior trip. This really topped off our high school life. Soon we will have to give up this carefree life for our chosen careers. We sincerely hope we leave our dear old Alma Mater a little better than it was when we enter through its doors. Through the years we have learned what skipping class and report to the ofiice immediately means, but we have also learned the meaning of hard work and co-operation. We leave B. H. S. with more than a diploma, but also with memories of happy and unforgettable days. Although a diploma may get lost or turn yellow with the passing years, these memories will always remain new and fresh in our minds and hearts. We had 110 members in our class, when we entered seventh grade, but since that time our membership has been reduced to approximately 90. We chose Nancy Arnold for our class president and Mr. Gulden was our class advisor. Our members took part in all activities open to first year junior high students and had a wonderful time doing it. During our eighth year we were under the leadership of Freda Warner. Our eighth year was better because we knew our way around. In our freshman year we elected Richard Fink for our president. We had some interesting experiences while visiting the county court house and the state capitol at Harrisburg. As sophomores, we cheered our fellows on the football and basketball teams. Also several of our girls played varsity basketball. Under the leadership of Joan Tate we sold candy at noontime and chose our class colors and flower. This year we entered Biglerville High School as jolly juniors. October 11 was a big day for us, for we received our class rings. We proudly showed them off to everyone. Our projects this year included selling hot dogs at football games, sponsoring food sales, dances, and skating parties. Our big event this year was our presentation of the junior-Senior Prom. We chose Joyce Ebbert as our class presi- dent, and Mr. Lawrence Gulden remains as our class advisor. With great hopes, we, the class of '57, are looking forward to our Senior year. Tough as nails, Hard as bricks, Biglerville's class of '56. ? ? ? joan Staub: Where do you keep the round envelopes sir?,' Mr. Eckenrode: What in the world do you want with round envelopes? joan Staub: You said I was to mail circulars, sir. ? ? ? Prison Warden: I've had charge of this prison for ten years. We're going to celebrate. What kind of a party do you boys suggest to have? Prisoners: Open house. ? ? ? A little girl was put in an upper berth for the first time. Sne kept crying till her mother told her not to be afraid because God would watch over her. 'iMother, are you there, she cried? Yes. Father, are you there? Yeah. A fellow-passenger lost all patience at this point and bellowed forth, We are all here, your father, mother, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, and cousins. All here, now go to sleep. Mamma. Wel1. Was that God? ? ? ? Rodney Miller: Our dog is like one of the family. Ray Schwartz: Which one? ? ? ? Luke was dead. A wonderful funeral was in progress. The preacher talked at length of the good traits of the deceased, what an honest man he was, what a lov- ing husband fand kind father. At length the widow whispered to one of her off- spring, Lem, go up there and take a look in that coffin and see if that's your paw. ? ? ? Boastful Boy: I used to live in a neighborhood so tough that if you had teeth you were a sissy. I don't want to scare you, said a little eight-year-old to his teacher, but my daddly says if I don't get a better re- port car , somebody's gonna get a spank- ing! ? ? ? Mr. Ehlman QHolding up a skulljt Describe this skull. Keith Wolff: Well, it's a fairly nice shaped woman's skull. Mr. Ehlman: How do you know it's a woman's skull? Keith Wolff: The mouth is open. 2 2 2 A mother told her two children that they could each have an apple. Later she asked, Judy, I see that Jackie has the smaller apple, did you give her a choice? Yes, mom, Judy said, I told her she could have the small one or none at all. 2 2 2 Lynn Peters and Larre Hoke met on the street. Lynn looked at Larre and said, From the looks of you, there must have been a famine. Larre smiled and answered, From the looks of you, you must have caused it. 2 2 2 Confucius says: A man who crosses the ocean twice and doesn't take a bath for the entire trip is a dirty double cross- er. ? ? ? Father to young daughter: Now if you had a dollar, and I gave you a dollar, how many dollars would you have? Daughter: Q'I'd have one. Father: Susie, you don't know your arithmetic. Daughter: You don't know my father. ? ? ? Busy husband getting ready for a ban- quet: Honey, did you see my belt around the house? Wife: No dear, I didn't know it was that big. ? ? ? Page ninety-one Class Prophesy Donegal, Ireland August 50, 1966 Dear Elaine, I was very pleased to hear that our ten year class reunion was so successful. Remember how they used to tell us, It's a small world? Well, I've proof of that statement. Though our actual class reunion was held in Biglerville, I have been sur- prised by a successive number of similar, individual reunions here in Europe. In fact, my reunions began before I even set foot in Europe. When my husband and I boarded the plane at Idle Wild, who do ou think was there to greet us? It was JEAN CONNER who just happened to be one of the hostesses assigned to our flight between New York and London. She informed me that VIRGINIA ALEX- ANDER and CHARLOTTE ARNSBERGER are also hostesses for the same airline. From Jean I learned also that the familiar looking, red-headed pilot was KEN PITZER, who was making his debut as a pilot for a commercial airline. Other than my encountering two classmates from B. H. S., our flight over was quite uneventful. But not so our arrival in London. While waiting for the custom officers to check through our baggage, I was astonished to see DOROTHY HYKES in the opposite line. She, it seems, was elected Sweetheart of Sigma Chi and was rewarded with a trip around the world. They say what happens twice happens three times and sure enough, when we arrived at the Conrad Hilton Hotel QI, feeling as though I could sleep foreverj the desk clerk turned out to be MARY ANN HART- MAN. We got into quite a lengthy conversation and somewhere along the line I found out that ANN HELTIBRIDLE, now a well-known fashion designer, you know, was also staying at the hotel. Finally, at about 3:00 A. M., I followed Jack to our suite fhe had left us at 1:50 preferring comfort to conversationj. The next day, when visiting a session of Parliment, I recognized LARRE HOKE, seated in the section reserved for news reporters. We went over to speak to him and I dis- covered that he is the English news correspondent for the United Press. After a week in England Jack and I, tired of the gloomy atmosphere, and hav- ing seen all the things and places we had planned to, continued on to France. I don't suppose I need tell you what we did our first night in Paris. While painting the town we ran across NANCY SHANER, who was dancing with a chorus line for one of the opera houses on the Avenue Del Opera. Naturally, the morning after the night before was spent in bed. In the afternoon we visited the Louvre. Here I was amazed to meet DAVE PLANKER. Even surrounded by all the mystic beauty of the Louvre, his paintings looked rather good - so good, in fact, that Jack insist- ed on buying one. The next few days in France we spent loafxng on the banks of the Seine River where M. G. M. is shooting its newest movie, starring JUDY CRIST. We dined one evening and she told me that two more of our classmates were work- ing with and for her in this movie. CLYDE FUNT is in charge of the scenery and JANET WARNER is a script girl. Our destination was Germany. While visiting one of Jack's friends in an Army hospital in Frankfort, I literally ran into PAT KEEBAUGH, who is a nurse there. She invited us to come see the U. S. O. show which was featuring RODNEY MILLER and DICK WICKLINE, who have cooked up a Martin and Lewis type act. The darling handmade articles in the West German stores caught my eye, so I spent several days shopping. One day I had lunch with JUDY SHETTER, who, with Gene, is also touring Europe. Our alotted time in Germany up, we travelled next through Switzerland, to Italy. The historical values of Rome were all ours after we met BILL TILTON, who, as ambassador to Italy, knew all the facts. At the Air Force base we toured in Southern Italy, I learned from RONNIE CURRENS, a plane mechanic, that JOANNE CICIERSKI is teaching in the school for children of Air Force personnel. Page ninety-two From Italy Jack and I backtracked, through Switzerland and Germany, across the Baltic Sea, to Sweden. In Stockholm I spent an afternoon with DORIS ROSE who is employed as a secretary in the Swedish Embassy. While in Sweden I read in a newspaper that HOWARD HEMSLEY was scheduled to speak in the Church of Saint Giles in Edinburg, Scotland, so Jack and I sailed from Goteburg and arrived in Edinburg in time to hear him. We spent very little time in Scotland because we wanted to be in Helsinki when' the summer Olympics opened. B-ville athletes certainly were an asset to the United States team that first day. Both RONNIE KOONTZ and PATSY WRIGHT won their events. At the Olympics I recognized PHIL STONER who was just one more spectator rooting for the B. H. S. alumni. Phil is back in the Army you know, and was spending his leave in Finland. When the Olympics were over frah-rah Biglervillej we began the last leg of our tour -- to Ireland, where we are now visiting Jack's relatives. We plan to stay here for the Irish Sweepstakes QI hear JOEL DUGAN has a horse enteredJ and then back to the United States. That's my trip, thus far, Lainie. I didn't do bad, did I? I can hardly wait to see you and your family and all the rest of my long lost friends! Say hello to Charlie for me - and bye-bye for now. Love, Connie Biglerville, Pennsylvania August 23, 1966 Dear Connie, I was so glad to hear that you survived your trans-Atlantic flight. You lucky girl to be in Europe! Remember how we used to dream of faraway places? It must be nice to be a wealthy doctor's wife and to tour all those fascinating foreign cities. However, the main reason I am writing is to tell you about our class reunion. Honestly, ten years have made all the difference in the world! Why, I hardly recognized our old classmates! Everyone has married, settled down, and acquired a little brood - that is, everyone except LOIS GAITHER and KEITH WOLFF. Lois is teaching chemistry and geometry at our Alma Mater, and Keith, as you prob- ably know, inherited his uncle's implement business and has made it the most thriv- ing enterprise of its kind in the East. But on with the reunion. We met in the main dining room of BOYER'S Restaurant at 6 P. M. and reminisced until Mr. Yost led us in devotions. Then a delicious meal was served topped off with BETTY'S prize-winning cherry pie. FLORENCE and ED MCGAUGHLIN and SHIRLEY and MERTON ECKENRODE were in charge of the food and decorations, fthey did a wonderful joblj ' After we had finished eating. Mr. Sheats gave a short speech telling us that we are one of the most successful classes of alumni and that we have left indelible impressions at B. H. S. QI wonder if you can still see where we spilled sulfuric acid in room eight?J RAY SCHWARTZ, who acted as toastmaster, then asked us to introduce, in turn, our respective families and to tell what each one of us had accomplished since graduation. All walks of life from primer to statesman were represented: JIM AL- BRIGHT is selling Chevrolet's for his uncle: ANN and WALLACE RICE own and operate a 50 acre fruit farmg DON TROSTLE also is a successful fruit grower, LYNN PETERS breeds hybrid chickens, GLENN CAREY and BARRY CLUCK are farming, TERRY BALTZLEY and JOHN FREY drive atomic-powered vans Page ninety-three for the LARRY PETER'S Van and Storage Company, GARNET COBLE is a foresterg NANCY DUNLAP has established the Dunlap Secretarial School in which, incidentally, FRANCHOT STRICKHOUSER is an instructorg RONALD GROUP plays center for the Boston Celticsg MAYNARD GOCHENAUER and DON RENT- ZEL are tackles for the Philadelphia Eagles, DALE THOMAS, PAUL HOWERY, and PETE WEIGLE are policemen, SHIRLEY HELLER, JEANNE KUYKEN- DALL, HELEN STAHL, and JANET STONER are just housewives, and JOAN STAUB is a bank clerk. JACKIE SLAYBAUGH and SONDRA TAYLOR, whose husbands are in the armed forces, were the only ones in the States unable to attend our reunion. Well, after all the families were introduced and everyone had given an account of his activities during the last ten years, SANDRA LOWER, who, as you know, is the sole woman senator from the Keystone Statef' read that ridiculous prophesy we wrote. Remember it? And can you guess what? Only a few of our predictions came close to materializing, but we all got a big laugh out of it. We also looked through class pictures and we girls came to an unanimous conclusion - we're each going on a diet tomorrow! After a while, DARBY and GENE SHAFFER awarded prizes to the ones whom we chose as being most successful in different fields. There was a three-way tie among SANDRA LOWER, RAY SCHWARTZ, and PATRICIA GUISE for the Most Famousf, Pat, as we remember her, and Ray both play in the New York Symphony Orchestra, Ray is a real long haired musician. PAT WALTER, who designs play clothes at Long Beach, was awarded the prize for Traveling Farthestf' CHARLOTTE HARTZEL received the prize for Changing the Most Through the Years. CALVIN MANAHAN later photographed the award winners at his studio and gave them their pictures as prizes. We had a wonderful time and if you had dreamed of traveling in Europe I would say that I wished you could have been with us. V I guess that's all for now.
