With songs and praises ringing, our debts we owe to you 3 Other high schools have their colors, which are loved by young and old But the noblest and the fairest are Biglerville's black and gold. When we enter life's great battle, and high school days are o'er, We will think of thee and love thee as ne'er we've done before. Our hearts will surely linger, our lives will ever tell, We love you, Alma Mater, true-hearted Biglerville. Page 5 Page 6 ADMINISTRATI ON Joint School Board First Row: Luther Lady, Cecil R. Q LlSSf1y Page 41 Senior Class Histor September of 1950 was the month Biglerville High School opened its doors to us as freshmen. With our membership increasing to 113 many of us participated in activities such as band, football, Pep Club, Hi-Y, F. F. A. and F. H. A. That year for the first time the Ninth Grade organized a chorus and took part in programs such as assemblies and other activities. That was the year we spent a morning visiting the County Courthouse, where we visited the various oflices and witnessed a court trial. Later in the year we visited our state capitol at Harrisburg where we spent a very interesting day. Harold Tuckey was elected class president for our freshman year and Mr. Donald R. Ernst was our class advisor. During our sophomore year we each chose the curriculum that we thought would benefit us most. Under the leadership of Robert Stoner we sold candy in the bitter cold weather at the football games. Again many took part in the activities and we chose our class colors and flower. In the spring we ordered our class rings and waited anxiously through the summer months to get back to receive them in the fall. Under the leadership of Louise Nary we became jolly juniors in the fall of 1952. Selling hot dogs at the football games was our project for that year. In Sep- tember we received our class rings and proudly showed them to everyone. Ten mem- bers of our class were elected to the National Honor Society this school year. Many of our members took part in activities. With the seniors still reminding us to give them an elaborate prom, we began to make plans for that. Moonlight and Roses was the selected theme, and around it we did everything possible to make the evening a pleasant memory. Finally we are beginning our senior year at B. H. S. Selling refreshments at ball games was once more a big project. We chose Keith Starner for our class presi- dent. Gradually we are approaching the end of a high school career and we hope the beginning of a bright future. Our plans and dreams are widespread and in some cases indefinte. As to our past class history, however, we will have many memories of the days we spent at Biglerville High School such, of our teachers, and of our friends we have made here. We have come from seventh grade in 1949 as a timid but persistent group of boys and girls. Our membership numbers around 75 students and we are divided among the various curricula, according to the choice of each member. Mr. Ralph L. Eckenrode guides us in our projects, which include roller skating parties and selling candy, hot dogs, and soft drinks at sports events. Our students are represented in every type of activity offered by the school - music, sports, dramatics, F. F. A., F. H. A., Student Council, cheerleading, religious club, journalism, and B-Club. Previously our class has been guided by Melinda Hauser, McCrae Albright, Richard Romig, and Frank Cline in 7th, 8th, 9th, and 10th grades respectively. This year our class is under the direction of Nevin Frantz. In September we proudly re- ceived our class rings, which are displayed by ourmembers. With these memories behind us, we look forward to our Senior year. CLASS OFFICERS President ...... .......................... N evin Frantz Vice-President --- .... I began my journey on JOE BARDER'S Touring Bus, which traveled as far as New York City to the monu- ment dedicated to GARY CRUM who had cleaned up Washington fhe was the chief street cleanerj. This magnificient piece of work had been done by a sculptor in Tennessee, PAUL HARMON. Since I had 24 hours before my plane would leave for Paris, France, I decided to tour this huge city. SANDOE'S dual-carburator taxi-cab took me to DAVE HARMON'S Hotel where I made a reservation for the night. The kind bellboy, EUGENE DEARDORFF, showed me to my room. When I saw its interior, I knew the decorations had been done by SUSAN BUCHER. Gazing out of the window I noticed a brightly lighted billboard advertising NARY'S Easy-to-understand short- hand books, and I made a mental note to get one. I picked up the phone and a pleasant-voiced operator, whom I recognized as BERNICE ARNOLD, placed my call to GRUBS Escort Establishment. Promptly they sent an escort to show me about the city. Imagine my surprise when it happened to be HARRY HARTMAN who had always enjoyed escorting ladies around. We first went to BLACK'S Meuseum where the latest addition was GARRY BEIDLER'S shrunken heads which he had just brought back from the African jungles. The SHETTER Diamond, a monstrous display of beauty from the DECKER Diamond Mines, was being cautiously watch- ed by a very conscientious guard, FRANK EHLMAN. We bid our adieu to the meuseum and continued on our way. We causually passed Madam NAOMI SHAFER'S exclusive hat shope and I couldn't resist going inside. Her latest crea- tion, the dumble-gump, was my choice, and she promised that her parcel boy, 'IERRY HUTTON, would deliver it to my hotel. The curtain at the afternoon matinee of HARPER Playhouse was just rising and we enjoyed watching D. E. STARRY'S comedy, Nails for My Colin, co-starring DOTTY DEARDORFF and RICHARD GAITHER. It was opening night at KEITH STARNER'S night club, and we stayed to watch the performance. The chorus line consisting of MILDRED FLICKINGER, EARLEEN THOMAS, JUNE HYKES, and SHIRLEY HELLER ex- hibited a fine display of dances. After a restful sleep on the hotel's specially designed matresses by WILLIAM CAREY, I was ready to continue my journey. I boarded the huge plane and the friendly stewardess, ROSEMARY FORSYTHE, made me comfortable. Within a few hours, the pilot, ELVIN BALDWIN, had landed in gay Paree. As I stepped off the plane, I recognized a newspaper reporter as HAROLD TUCKEY, who directed me to the passports bureau where the friendly agent, DALLACE UNGER, checked my passport. I had my baggage sent to DON BREIGHNER Inn where I had made a reservation. The delicious smell coming from HELLER-FRITZ Cafe led me in- side, where I was promptly served by a French-speaking waitress, who, to my sur- prise, was SHELBY HERMAN. As I was leaving the cafe, MARTHA and BUR- Page 84 NELL DEHOFF came in. Their reason for being in France was to celebrate their fifth wedding aniversary, and I gave them my fondest wishes. When I got to the Inn, the French maids, QI thought they werej GENEVIEVE TAYLOR and HERMIE CRUM, helped me freshen up a wee-beet and I went on a shopping spree. By recommendation of the Inn's supervisor, BETTY CLAPPER, I went to Monsieur WRIGHT'S Style Shoppe. He greeted me with his typical motto, Our Styles Bring Smiles, and his graceful models, BEVERLY STARNER, HELEN WEAVER, and ANITA WERTZ displayed unique creations. DONALD PIERRE KUHN'S Beauty Salon was my next stop, and then I was ready to visit. During my two weeks stay, places of interest which I visited were the MC- DANNELL, MARKLE, and MISENHELTER Fencing School, PITZER'S Fruit Market, SCHACHLE 8: SCHACHLE Gymnasium, KANE and KESSLER Tea Room, and SOWERS Automobile Factory. Upon returning to the states, I flew directly to California where I was greeted by GLENN REX, who invited me to his Bar-B-Q Ranch. The riding instructor, JOYCE RICE, soon had me on a hoss. I attended the weekly square dance where the music-makers, ELSIE MILLER, BETTY ORNER, LUTHER RIDER and CARR MARKS kept everyone stepping. On my way toward the east once more, I stopped at a Texas Air Force Base where I visited Major ROBERT MAUSS. HELEN DIXON and DOLORES HART were taking flying lessons from a very capable instructor, EARL HOSTETTER. In Michigan I bid farewell to JOHN GANTZ and CHARLES DOVE, two fishermen who were just leaving the dock to get another haul, In Louisiana I helped GWEN and WAYNE GUISE celebrate' their housewarming, but I made too much noise, and the schoolteacher next door, YVONNE HELLER, brought a disorderly conduct charge upon me. When my case was brought to court, my lawyer, FRANCIS HOWERY, and her private secretary, ILEANE REX, were ready to de- fend me. The judge, LEE DUGAN, was kind and I went scot free. In New Orleans, SHARLIE PRYOR had become chief dog-catcher. GLORIA GRIFFIE, the cashier at FINFROCK,S Last National Bank, cashed a check for me and I spent most of it at JOE HARMON'S department store. GEORGE ANNA BARBOUR'S cotton plan- tation in Georgia was prospering and she traveled along to Florida for a short vaca- tion with me. JOAN HARTMAN, BETTY SHEAFFER, and BARBARA SLAY- BAUGH were bathing on Miami Beach in bathing suits designed by CAROLYN SMITH. KATHRYN WEIDNER'S Waterskiing school looked inviting, but the Italian food at ALICE THOMAS'S Always Good Restaurant beckoned me, and her chef, ROBERT WATSON, proved the restaurant's name. At the Grand Ol Opra in Tennessee, MAYSIE SHAFER was the allstar singer. DORIS STARNER, a nationally-known scientist, and her assistant RUTH STARNER, were scheduled to return from Russia in just three hours, and I knew I must hurry back to New Ypgk to interview them and then to my reporter's desk at the New York Herald O ce. Page 85 Students with television in their rooms will go down in history - and just about any other course. Golf Pro: Tee the ball. Novice: Sure, I see it, but why the baby talk? One day the strong man in the circus lifted 200 pounds with his teeth. The next day he lifted 20 pounds with his gums. A little old lady broke her ankle and had to wear a cast on it for three months. She was all excited when the doctor came to take it off. 'lDo you mean you're going to let me climb stairs again? she asked. The doctor said she could. Thank goodness, she exclaimed. 'klt was so hard shinnying up and down that drain pipe! Salesman: This car will go 180 miles an hour and stop on a dime. Prospective buyer: What happens after that?l' '- Salesman: A little putty knife comes out and scrapes you off the windshield. After a man finished drinking a glass of lemonade he had bought from two boys running a stand, one of the boys said, You're sure lucky we had some left after our dog stuck his nose in it and started lapping it up. G. C.: I don't know whether to be a barber or an author. D. D.: Why not toss a coin? Heads or tales. - As the motorcycle roared down the road, the old mountaineer blinked his eyes at the strange contraption, then raised his trusty squirrel rifle and fired. Did ye kill it, Paw? asked his little son. Not yet. I can still hear the critter growlin', answered the moun- taineer, but I shore made it turn that man loose.'l B. D.: Coach, did you take my time on that last lap? H. B.: No, but you sure did. Two mosquitoes were resting on Robinson Crusoe's arm. I'm leaving now, said one, but I'll see you on Friday. Al: Insects can talk to each other. Hal: What makes you think so? Al: Aren't moths always chewing the rag? Generally speaking, women are gen- erally speaking. Moe: Were any of your ancestors on the stage or screen? Shmoe: My cousin was the princi- pal character at a public function once, but the platform fell. Moe: Did he fall to the floor? Shmoe: No - the rope stopped himf' Coon: Let's cut French class today. Dite: Can't. I need the sleep. Old bankers never die. They just lose interest. Principal: Do you mean to tell me that you played hookey from school all yesterday? B. C.: UNO, I didn't mean to tell you, but you found out anyway. Terry: If the tiger belongs to the cat family, and the wolfibelongs to the dog family, where does the skunk belong? Bob: High on a windy hill. A sidewalk astronomer mounted his telescope on its tripod and swung it around just as a shooting star fell. A native of the backwoods country, who had been intertly watching him, suddenly exclaimed, By golly, that feller sure is a good shot. B. D.: If the Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower, the midgets on Shrimp Boats, the doctors on Blood Vessels, and the students on Scholarships, how did ordinary people get here? D. W.: Gee, I'm stumpedf' B. D.: Citizenships. Mr. Gordon: It gives me great pleasure to give you 85 on your ex- am1nat1on. Jess: Why not make it 100 and give yourself a real thrill? Big drop of ink: Where's your brother? I haven't seen him lately. Little drop of ink: He's just out of the pen after finishing a long sen- tence. Student: Did you give me my grades in round numbers? Teacher: Yes -- I gave you zero. Mr. Sheats: What did Caesar ex- claim when Brutus stabbed him? Voice from rear of room: OUCH!
