But the dead men weathered the gale and are rapidly showing signs of life, if not intelligence. lieing gentlemen of fortune and smart as paint, we've even managed to lay hy a stol'e of treasures for a l'ainy day. NVe are hoarding in that same chest loot from four eventful years on high seas when many a good pirate watkeil the plank, and you may lay to thatf Yes four long years hefore the mast, and a ship fairly ready to sink with gold at the end of the cruise. XVe set sail in the fall of 19243 with a green crew of stiekers. There was shore-leave for Christmas holidays with usual extra rations for all hands. liaek on hoard we had our lirst taste of a squall. Great hlaek clouds of Algehra. a howling Latin northeaster, and a fierce hail of Science had the ship near the rocks, and many a good pi1'ate thought of his den on the shore. In the ealm after the storm those ol' us ahle to report for duty found seasiek pirates gripping the rail. Still a long way from Sheepskin Island, we steered to the Sophomore Cave to hury the year's dulf. There in sight of a harhor a tropical gale caught up with us and showed us what the angl'y elements could do with a helpless hand of pirates. Badly crippled. we spent the summer reeuperating from injuries. Sails were hoisted again in the fall of '27 with Captain Slayhaugh in command. Hough weather p1'oved to he the satisfaction of all concerned that our ship was seaworthy. The hot months that passed turned a few of the weakest tars to landluhhers. hut all tough hands were l'eady to sail fox the third time when Seplemher winds were high. Council of war left, for Captain ltoth and the rest of us swore allegiance. ln the next spring when they sighted an old vessel anchored oll' Gulf lieaeh lookout reported it to he twenty-nine and we drew up along side for a friendly parley. These good old hueeaneers had been almost in sight ol' our long sought island and tipped us oll' as to the general lay of the land hy point of compass. Their mouths were watering for food. and we gave all we could spare hefore we sent them on. Captain Roth followed their trail until .lune. when it seemed hest to stop and load on eargo. The staunch old guard was hack and hard at it hefore cold weather. lt was hitter when the tide grounded us hy Mid-term Cliff. aml it seemed for days as if we must he snowed under or hroken to hits hy rocks. XVhen it lifted, we were short of hands. hut with goal hard hy, not a man of us would give up the ship. Months later, weary worn from four long years of strife, a ery Land Ho f came in time just to ward oll' mutiny and Sheepskin Island loomed hefore us like the answer to a prayer. Hope renewed at sight of reward, we launched the jolly hoats and rowed for land. There we scattered and searched widely in all directions for some sign of hidden treasure. .lust hefore dark a shrill cry gathered the hands together where Captain ltoth stood holding the key to the iron chest. Each held his hreath as four huskies at Captain's command pried oil' the rusty lid and opened to view piles of snowy sheep- skin. the hooty long desired. livery worthy pirate was given his just deserts. his hard earned sheepskin chart to the innumerahle treasures of earth.
