But as time welll on the numbel' ot' ad- venturers on the sea ol' knowledge increased so that it was necessary for a second building' the Community Hall to be erected to accommodate knowledge seekers. The system is organized on a six-six basis. The grade building houses the lirst six grades and contains a combination auditorium-gymnasium. The auditorium has a seating capacity ot' approximately tour hundred and lifty. This winter a maroon velour Iire-prool' curtain was added to the stage. This building is also equipped with shower baths and dressing rooms l'or health classes and athletics. The library is located in the high school building and is also used as an otliee. The library contains six dillerent sets ot' encyclopedias and approximately one thousand books on tiction. nonliction, travel. essays, poetry, etc. All books are classilied and catalogued. The lioard ol' Education appropriates annually about one hundred dollars for new library books. Twenty-one of the leading magazines are purchased each year for the library. In the winter ol' 1928 the School Board pul'ehased six acres ot' land adjoining the high school building for athletic purposes. In the spring of 1929 the School lioard also purchased two acres adjoining the grade building for a playground for the grades. Last autumn our high school lmilding was greatly beautilied by the planting ol' shrubbery. At present the high school ol'l'ers three courses academic, general and com- mercial. The school day is divided into six one-hour periodsfthe lattel' pal't ot' cach period is used for supervised study. Each class has one activity period a week. An assembly period is held every Thu1'sday morning, between eleven and twelve, in the audito1'ium when a program is presented by some school organization. As to organizations the school maintains an Orchestra, Glee Club, Dramatic lglub, Science Club, and two literary soeietiesfliiley and XVhittier. The linances and school activities are managed by the Student Council which is composed ol' four Seniors, three Juniors, two Sophomores, one Freshman, and one from both the Seventh and Eighth gradesfa member ol' the faculty is also included in this group. The achievelnents of liiglerville High School have been g1'eat in the past, and it is our most sincere wish that our Alma Mater will ever continue to advance in the years which lie before her. lt. li. ll. i'f. But the dead men weathered the gale and are rapidly showing signs of life, if not intelligence. lieing gentlemen of fortune and smart as paint, we've even managed to lay hy a stol'e of treasures for a l'ainy day. NVe are hoarding in that same chest loot from four eventful years on high seas when many a good pirate watkeil the plank, and you may lay to thatf Yes four long years hefore the mast, and a ship fairly ready to sink with gold at the end of the cruise. XVe set sail in the fall of 19243 with a green crew of stiekers. There was shore-leave for Christmas holidays with usual extra rations for all hands. liaek on hoard we had our lirst taste of a squall. Great hlaek clouds of Algehra. a howling Latin northeaster, and a fierce hail of Science had the ship near the rocks, and many a good pi1'ate thought of his den on the shore. In the ealm after the storm those ol' us ahle to report for duty found seasiek pirates gripping the rail. Still a long way from Sheepskin Island, we steered to the Sophomore Cave to hury the year's dulf. There in sight of a harhor a tropical gale caught up with us and showed us what the angl'y elements could do with a helpless hand of pirates. Badly crippled. we spent the summer reeuperating from injuries. Sails were hoisted again in the fall of '27 with Captain Slayhaugh in command. Hough weather p1'oved to he the satisfaction of all concerned that our ship was seaworthy. The hot months that passed turned a few of the weakest tars to landluhhers. hut all tough hands were l'eady to sail fox the third time when Seplemher winds were high. Council of war left, for Captain ltoth and the rest of us swore allegiance. ln the next spring when they sighted an old vessel anchored oll' Gulf lieaeh lookout reported it to he twenty-nine and we drew up along side for a friendly parley. These good old hueeaneers had been almost in sight ol' our long sought island and tipped us oll' as to the general lay of the land hy point of compass. Their mouths were watering for food. and we gave all we could spare hefore we sent them on. Captain Roth followed their trail until .lune. when it seemed hest to stop and load on eargo. The staunch old guard was hack and hard at it hefore cold weather. lt was hitter when the tide grounded us hy Mid-term Cliff. aml it seemed for days as if we must he snowed under or hroken to hits hy rocks. XVhen it lifted, we were short of hands. hut with goal hard hy, not a man of us would give up the ship. Months later, weary worn from four long years of strife, a ery Land Ho f came in time just to ward oll' mutiny and Sheepskin Island loomed hefore us like the answer to a prayer. Hope renewed at sight of reward, we launched the jolly hoats and rowed for land. There we scattered and searched widely in all directions for some sign of hidden treasure. .lust hefore dark a shrill cry gathered the hands together where Captain ltoth stood holding the key to the iron chest. Each held his hreath as four huskies at Captain's command pried oil' the rusty lid and opened to view piles of snowy sheep- skin. the hooty long desired. livery worthy pirate was given his just deserts. his hard earned sheepskin chart to the innumerahle treasures of earth. MIRROR N sg K' -.is WA Prince There Was 'l'he night of Novemher 7, 1929, is a very conspicuous one. as far as liiglervillc High School is concerned. 'fhrongs of men, women, and children were steadily making their way through the portals of the auditorium. The Peter Pan Ushers were kept very husy four of these were girls who were attired in red tams, red huttertly skirts, and white middies with red-and-white Peter Pan Usher pennants displayed across their chests. After the audience was seated, the lights went out, and the curtains parted. liveryonc was curious to know what was going to happen in a few minutes the mystery was solved. AC'l' I took place in Charles Martin's room at the Plaza Hotel. Mr. Martin was none other than Kermit Gulden. who was commonly known as the Prince. Bland ttleorge llickl was his most humble and ohedient servant. .lack Carruthers tllonald lticherl was an old friend of the Prince and tried to show him that life was really worthwhile. ln the interim between Act I and Act ll, Miss Anna Lackey did some artistic toe-dancing which caused the audience to lean forward in their seats and wonder what was coming next. Act ll occurl'ed in the sitting room at Mrs. Prouty's Boarding House. Mrs. Prouty was Helen Baker. and could she act her part and show her colors? l'll say she could. She had a peculiar dispositioneone minute she was riding in auger and the next minute she was as meek as a lamh. Her daughter Gladys Cleanctte Smallwoodl was a very charming young lady who liked to he next to Mr. Short tllale ltothl. Miss Vincent tViolet Gindlespcrgerl was a typical old maid who would hlush every time a man would look her way. Comfort tMargaret Hulfl was a very clever little miss who had become a friend of Ml. Criket tHarold 'l'rostlel. an old man who loved children. Miss XVoods tCaroline Colel, an authoress, tried to make good and ltnally through the aid of the Prince she succeeded in setting one nl, her stories. Between Act ll and Act lll. a colored man from Gettysburg did some very humorous tricks which anmsed the audience very much. Act lll was a scene in Carruther's Office, three days later. 'l'wo other charac- ters were introduced ff-llelia tliatherine ltouzerl. a colored servant and liddic tllalc Millerl. the otlice boy. 'l'he play closed with a love scene. as usual. 'l'hc Prince had just secured a little home for three Miss XVoods Know Mrs. Martini, Comfort and himself. .lust as the curtains were closing, the Prince kissed Comfort and then the former Miss XVoods. 'l'he success of this IilaY we owe to Miss Jessica G. XVeaver's faithful and un- liring efforts in directing it. C.xnol.vN Com-i THE CRIMINA L CA SIC Charles Slaybaugh was accused ol' burning the lrame house of Stanton Thomas on Thursday evening. November 23. 1928. at 11:30 P. M. The Thomas family was away. There was no snow: therefore. the criminal could not he tracked. The court session was called to order by the Court-Crier, after which the Judge became the supreme sovereign-the tipstall's aided him when it was necessary. The audience seemed to be stupetied throughout the court procedure and did not relax until the jury went into the private room, together with the tipstal'l's who supervised their remarks and tried to mold them into a common decision which would automatically become the verdict. VVhen the door opened and the jury came forth. everyone was anxious to hear the verdict. The jury returned with a verdict of Not Guilty. Court then adjourned and each person was p1'ivileged to go home. 1950 -3 TJ CNMQMWW Page Scuenly ' x' MI anon u. ,--v' , ,Q - , . hx --: l . '----... . 169' . AN EV ERYDAY CH Iilill I believe in human kindness. I believe in the hearty handshake. in hospitality, comradeship, frien-d- ship, love. I believe in fun and laughter. both as a tonic for the blues, and as an outlet for high spirits. I believe in the beauty ol' llowers, sunsets, and mountainsg in the music ol' birds and brooks. I believe that work is the best panacea for most ills, especially those of the mind, and that fresh air. ex- ercise. and sleep are the best medi- cines for the body. I believe that there is a bright side to everything. and that we would be mol'e aware of the good about us were our hearts more responsive to its touch. I believe that an ounce ot' frankness and explanation is worth a pound ol' repentance and forgiveness. and will often prevent heartache and bitter misunderstanding. .Iustice is the only worship. She claims to be the largest shipper of apples in the state ol' Pennsylvania and holds a place of importance in the shipment ol' peaches. This is a signal honor-eis it not '? Our orchards produce mo1'e than apples and peachesg namely, the blossoms. ln early May our hillsides are patches ot' pink and white. They present a spectacular sight as they are contrasted against the deep blue of the rolling hills and mountains. Here is a spring-time paradise--fa sight not easily forgotten. XVe are proud ol' the natural beauty ol' this vicinity and with our neighboring towns we gladly share it with those who come to see it. XVe do not claim to de- serve any honor for the Battle ol' Gettysburgg but we are proud that we live near Gettysburg. At Flora Dale one may see great orchards. Locust trees line the highway. Here also is the oldest Friends' meeting-house in this section of the state. The road through Buchanan Valley known as The Narrows is without a doubt one ot' Pennsylvania's scenic drives. First we come to the Arendtsville Union Park. Here the South Mountain Fair is held-reputed to be the largest agricultural lair in Pennsylvania. From now on one sees dashing streams and hills covered with hemlocks. A short distance oil' the highway is the Lutheran Training Camp. No more litting place could have been chosen for the camp. Continuing we come to Piney Mountain Summit which has an elevation of one thousand three hundred and tifty feet. ll' one wants a better vicw he should go to Big Flat. on which is located a lire tower. Here one can obtain a view ot' the surrounding country for many miles. Further on we come to one ol' Adams County's historic spots. Here at the .lesuit Mission we sec a statue of Mary Jcmison, the white squaw. Since seeing is believingfyou cannot all'ord to miss seeing these beautiful mountains. ei: at '95 Page One llundrecl Tum N39-'G-Gx x' nr New Store and Building W ill Be Open This Sunnner Until then we will oeeupy t6lllll0l'Ell'y quarters: tml will have our usual sto:-k of good clothing and furnishings for men and boys.
