Lest we forget those things which have contributed to our well being and happiness, the1'e is herewith appended a chronological summary of the events which have gone far to make for us the enviable reputation we possess. In Americais infancy. a little log school house building upon the site of the present structure housed the boys and girls of that period. Primitive beyond be- lief in comparison with the present large and comfortable structure. in that build- ing were laid the foundations of the remarkable school spirit that burns in our coin- niunity today. For several decades the old log building served its purpose but with the growth of the community a new st1'uctu1'e was put in its place. This was just before the great Civil lVar. Standing on a main highway, along which marched the Con- federate troops on their way to tight at historic Gettysburg, this building could tell some stirring tales if such a. thing were possible. It .furnished aceonnnodations for the youth of the community for approximatelylforty years. Who can estimate the part it played in moulding the minds of that period or who can conceive of the iniinence' it maintained? A With the coming of the railroad and the development of the fruit growing industry, the town changed its name, taking on the' name of Biglerville in honor of the man who was then governor of the Commonwealth. This structure served until the present building was erected in 1917. Thus it can be seen that upon the same spot for more than a century, American ideals have been fostered and the love of justice and freedom been planted in the hearts and minds of our people thru the agency of our school. The first ,high school-was established in 1914. The first class was graduated in 1915. Gradually the length of the course has been increased and new subjects added' to the curriculum until at the present time ive have a. first class high school, accredited with the state depaitinent at Harrislnirg. offering commercial and aca- demic courses. Especially in the past four years have we grown. From an enroll- ment of forty-two in 1920 the school has grown to 116. The Junior High School brings this enrollment up to 146. ' ' ' liiglerville should be dear tothe heart of every member, for around its name are entwined some of the sweetest memories that dwell in our store house of recol- lection. It is true that we meet our difficulties, but in looking back over our school life the sorrows of youth sink into oblivion and the radiance of the pleasurable times we have had seem to glow alone in our thoughts. As we say our parting word of farewell, we are not unmindful of those who have held up to us the torch of knowledge. We shall always be grateful to our be- loved faculty and the progressive a.nd efficient Board of Dierctors of dear old Big- lerville High School. A r G. B. She is going to be at nurse and already we hear the masculine chorus singing I Don't YVunta Get Well. We don't blame them. Good Luck, Gracious l20l T '41 Q' Srninr Gllaaa 1-Iiatnrg The imniortal hard ot Avon has heen given credit for originating the justly celebrated line, All the worldis a stagcf, The world is a vast revolving play-house on the surface of which comedy, tragedy and farce find room. g One particular spot on this whirling sphere saw in the fall of nineteen-twenty, the introductory how of twenty-one youthful actors across the toot lights oi' that portion hounded hy the confines of Biglerville High School. ,During that first hectic act. with trembling knees and palpitating hearts, we took our respective parts in the activities of the school. Inoculated early with that priceless virus known as school spirit, it was not long before- the first eiiiects ot the dazzling lights wore oft. Time has dimmed for ns many ot the events of that first year. But the corn roast at Heiges' Grove. the beginnings of haskethall. the inaugu- ration of a hasehall team-these stand out as ineoltacahle scenes in which 1924 played a prominent part. With the advent ot the second act. we lost three players but gained one. With almost incredible swiftness, the whirling stage turned its face towards the audience and aga.in 192-L occupied the lime-light. The 'first real etfort to organize a basket ball team was made that season and the success was due to the support given by us as Sophomores as well as by our financial support. We firmly led the verdant Fresh- man into the paths of scholastic righteousness. The triumphs of B. H. S. at the first field meet of the Adams County schools resulted in no small measure to the efforts of 1924. That third act was one long period of unconfined joy. Ursurping the peroga- tives of the carefree Junior, we led them all in social events, culminating in the lavish entertainment of the Seniors at Piney Mountain Inn. However, we never neglected our scholastic work and the high standards of our class room work can he attested to from Mar-i' or l3earie hy any who might he- so curious to inquire. Both our boys and girls brought glory and honor to the school by starring on the athletic teams. Actions speak louder than wordsi' runs the old adage and a review of the events at old B. H. S. will hear out that our actions certainly made a noise. We are now presenting our finale. With unahated speed, we a1'e nearing the great day of days. The luster of our fame shines ever the brighter thru the last remaining months of our sojourn in this small drama of school life. We are proud to have heen members of 1924. Without boasting, and with gracious modesty, we can truthfully say that we have ever held high the colors of our school and that without 192-L. Biglerville High would not shine nearly so brightly in. the school firmament. And without dear old Biglerville High. its traditions and spirit, 192-1 would have heen sadly lacking. Time: Present. r AT THE END OF THE RAlNBOVV l23l -I ' J- 31 5 QQ ' ,- Svrninr Ariiuitiez Chief among the activities carried on as distinetly Senior undertakings were the two dances which our class staged during the year. This was the Iirst time in the history of Biglerville High Sc-hool that any class SllCCGSSlilllly staged two such events. The first was the Autumnal Dance given in November. .Beautiful decora- tions of leaves, branches and colored lights made the Auditorium place of beauty. It was a huge success. 'l'he second dance was our Yalentine Dance in l'l9lll'll211'Y. Needless to say the decorations cents-red about hearts. lt was a, splendid event. To make this book possible and also to meet obligations which will arise, our class has had several ways to raise funds. One of the niost successful was the sell- ing of candy. We have disposed of several boxes and our profits will net close to one hundred dollars. Talk about pep and initiative, 1924 is bubbling over with it. And then there was the Popularity Contest? It certainly was original. We conceived the idea of selling votes at so much per vote, and using the proceeds to purchase several prizes. Needles, to say a handsome profit was left for us. And some say we have pipe dreams, but we are going to take a chance and tell you ot fiOur Washington Trip. We havenit taken it yet but we are planning. And we will be the iirst'B. H. S. Class to visit the National Capital as a body. Aiint Nature Grand. U We,1l say so. A-CT II AT THE END OF THE RAINIEONV' t24l 1' ' J I qw, 1 fy -jf! 1 7 , , ' 1K1 F 5 453,-411 f 1 P , , IQ 1 '31 . When on that bright and sunny September morning in 1922, thirty-six bashful boys and girls wended their way to Biglerville High School no one would have foretold the enormous strides that were possible and today in looking over the Class of 1926, it is almost unbelievable to recall the awkward and angular personages of our-class in the polished products of today. Shy and modest, the first few weeks, we timidly took upon ourselves to do those things which were assigned to us by our advisors. Fate dealt not unkindly to us. Self possession was given us thru the medium of Miss Mac's preposterous floor talks in Englishg initiative was developed among us by the kindly encourageinent ot Mr. Muehe, and perseverance was instilled in us by the Latin assignment of Mrs. Bower. Our scholastic abilities can be traced to our native talent and our athletic accomplishment to our superior physical make-up. Heavy toll was taken ol? us during that Hrst year. No less than nine members are counted among the missing. For various reasons, good and bad, we lost some shining lights. But with the advent otreach drop-out, our hearts grew more de- termined to stick it out and our twenty-seven resolute members are going to see it thru. Vain repetition would result in an enumeration of our successes. For every project launched by the Biiglerville High School found among its leaders members of the Sophomore Class. Tell ine, dear reader, who can surpass our Dessa in her new evening gown at the Senior Dancesg or what radio fan is more expert than our own Stu1npy,' Sell or Skelegan,' Rebert? In stock judging, tell me what other boy won two gold medals besides Gump Garretson? And who is well nigh perfect in scholastic work if it not Zippy Zora ' Murray. Oh yes, we could enumerate the accoinplishments of each 'individual rneinber. Hfioodei '- Wagner. Whity Slaybaugh, Cholly lfissell, Lcssie Kautinian, Ru'Ens,' Myers, 'Tal,mby Carey, Bud Slaybaugh, Peggy Mock, Toots'f Rouzer and all the rest have led in some particular line. But space forbids nie mention all. Standing on the threshold of our Junior year, we look back with pride on our past. No need to hide it under a. dark blanket. Filled with accomplishments and deeds of worth, we 'feel that 1,0526 has been a credit to the school. A glimpse of what lies before us however urges us on to our goal. The future calls ns and it can only be judged by the past. W e are glad to have been a part of Biglerville High and will strive to do our best to honor her and ourselves in the years to come. M. K. The Sophs think that Zippy Zora is some speed demon when it comes to getting 100 per cent but hearken unto the tale of all those perfect marks obtained by honest toil by that Freshman, :'Donny Heiges. Why we could sit here an entire day and just tell you of the individual accomplishments of our bunch. But that would weary you. We are young in years and in elass history. But it is what is before us that we are living in hope. We have our ideals. We are ambitious. 1927 will make Biglerville High School proud of having such a. class. With characteristic pep and energy, we are going to our task. Biglerville High inust grow. Its sphere of in- iluenee must be enlarged. There is a great future for the school. Our class has realized this we are all putting forth our very best eiforts to help our school attain its rightful place. Our boys are going in for athletics. They are not wait- ing until the last year or so and then going out and expecting to make the Varsity. 'lfhey are now serving their apprenticeship on the scrub teams and when the. proper time comes. they will he prepared and 'Found not wanting. Our girls are not sulk- ing because they are not put lirst in school affairs. They are learning and in the coming years they will be qualified to be the social leaders ot the school. Nineteen twenty-seven is a. real class. flt has a. glorious altho brief past and it will hare a still more glorious future. With faith in the teachers and faith in itself. our elass will lead. B. But we are not disheartened and we are not ashamed. Believe us. when we tell you that every team that played us knew that they were in a real game and that if we would have had halt of the breaks of the game, there might be a different tale to tell. Again we were members ot the Mason-llixon League. We had to work up an entirely new team and the ma.terial at hand was green as grass. But the boys had the spirit and the pluck. They fought hard and did their best. They always played a, hard clean game and that is and always will be more important to Biglerville High School than the victories which might be and which often are gained at the expense of good sportsmanship. Razor Oyler cafptained the team. He played hard in every game and kept the boys working all of the time. dlleefi' Hilbert managed the team and always had the lield in shape 'for playing. Prof Muehe coached the hours and encouraged them. We are not looking back with vain regrets but to the future with hope. May 1924 bring us better luck. RW'-WU 7 ll . The cold weather hampered work on the diamond to a large extent but the team put up some pretty good ball. The great weakness was in the pitching staff and in the receiving end. Our boys had a pretty good inlield and the outiielders were there with the goods. Mr. H. S. Bolan coached the team and did well. He gave lots of time to drilling the fundamentals of the game and this work ought to show this season. Miken Knouse captained the team and he did most of the twirling with f'Scotty', and Fidler helping out. lliehl also tried his hand in the box. Razor Oyler at the hot corner did good work. Harry Scott was manager and he showed capability in handling the ailiairs of the team. The prospects are not just so bright for the 1924 season but with the general good spirit and with a lot of' hard work. we hope to see Biglerville High School out front plugging away to make a name for itself in Adams County interscholastic baseball. l46l BASKETBALL Basket Ball, the prime sport at Biglerville High School enjoyed in 1923-24 a season of unequaled prosperity. First through the courtesy of ther Auditorium Association. we got the use ol' an excellent playing lloor which aeeomniodated our big crowds comfortably. Secondly, we got the support oi' the towns-people as never be- fore. Third. we had a coach Shorty Stock whose heart and soul was in the welfare of the team. who knew his business from A to Z and whose etforts were always with the boys. The final factor in our success was the excellent management of our one and only Doe Miller who assisted Prof', Mnehe in H,1'1'2l,1'1gl'l'lg the games. Of course all of the above would have been tor naught, had we not a bunch of willing and hardworking players. In'i1'nilful of pep and school spirit. And our girls. Their team was a. 'fine drawing card. They more than did their share. thanks to the kindly eucourage-inent of Miss Olmsted as coach and the fine work of Miss Higham, as manager. Look the records over and see why Biglerville will look back. upon 1923-24, as a big basket ball year at the old school. 30504. :Law g :arf fl. We entered three meets and were victorious in two of them, and placed in the third., Our boys did the best they could and were out 'front working' all ot the time. In the Penn Relays. the biggest athletic carnival that staged in America, we competed with a. very fast class and came in third. Our runners received bronze medals. At the Adams Country Public School meet at Gettysburg, our boys won a number of events and placed in many others. lVe totaled sutiicient points to win first place in the meet. A silver cup was our trophy for this victory. At the Franklin and Marshall Inter-scholastics at liancaster, we ran first in the relay and came home with a beautiful banner and gold medals for the boys. Our girls also won a silver cup at the Gettysburg Meet. They had no trouble in getting' first place. Captain Milliken Knouse. Shorty , Fidler, Harry Scott and Razor Oyler composed the relay team which contributed so much to our success. The work was handled by Prof. C. U. MILLER . . . . .fl'1'ea.s'111'm' The Student Council continues to be one ot Biglerville High School's im- portant organizations. It directs the activities of the school which are outside of the curriculum. Especially does it supervise the financial side of our affairs and when we tell you that Treasurer Clziude Miller handled more than eight hundred dollars during the school year. you can see that our council functions. The Student Council does more than merely motivate the activities of the school. It gives to the boys and girls who have been chosen representatives of their classes, an insight into the school problems and it brings the pupil and teacher into a relationship which is hardly ever found in a school which does not have this organization. The teacher also sees many things in a different light, and altho some of us complain. that the teachers run the S. C. , nevertheless we know that each person has his or her say. As a training in citizenship, the members of B. H. S. Student Council are getting valuable experience. l56l ' -- QQ' I. 4 rhating Biglerville 'High School did not 'lfeature debating this year as in .previous years. the one big reason being the disbanding of the Adams County Inter-Scholastic Debating League. For two years, liiglewille tied with the other two members of the league tor iii-st place, altho in taking the sum total ot judges' decisions. Bigler- ville led the league each year. The f1'O'l7l1Y' was awarded to Arendtsville Vocational School as a result ot pulling straws. liiglerrille received the ba.nneJ: which was to have been awarded for second place. lililiorts have been made by liiglerville to stage an inter-scholastic debate with some county high school during the season just passed. but the ettorts resulted in failure. But we have had our debates just the same. If you don't believe it., just visit the English Classes oecasiona.ll5'. That Junior debate on 'TXVOHIHD Suitragei' was a classic and the Sophomore debate on The Greatness of Wilson and Lincoln was just as interesting. Numerous other inter-class debates enlivened our school sessions and gave us excellent training in the forsenic art. Just looli at our budding musicians! Under the skilllful direction of Mr. L. V. Stock, our orchestra attained heights of fame, never before attained by Biglerville High School musical organizations. Not only did they furnish the strains of music required at the various literary society meetings, Home and School League meetings and other school functions, but they were called upon to display their talents in Bendersville at several lodge functions and entertainments. Let us give them the once over as they appear in the above' picture. First is Bi'n'ney Wright, and his clarinet. Next comes Pete Rafifensperger and he also blows a clarinet while W. K. Enck handles the violin like a master. The druinmer, f'Frankie deari' is nine-tenths ot the orchestra, if volume is considered. Then comes the second fiddle, with our one and only Earle playing it. The only feminine member appears next, lending grace and beauty to the picture and ar- tistic music via the piano. Whitey , Noah', Thomas, and :'Johnny', Black Colne in order with Mr. Stock, sometimes known Sousa the Secondv is standing in the rear. Believe 1ne our High School Orchestra is it. This play was given on May 5th, 1923. and was Biglerville's contribution to PennsyIvania's Music: Week. The highly Cljlillllillllillfillj' remarks made hy all who saw the show cer- tainly gave evidence of the anprec-iatiou our patrons felt of our efforts. As usual Miss Mac directed our work and to her must be given the credit for the success. And to the loyal boys and girls who took part due praise should he given.
