QB111' Svrhnnl fluatnrg Educatlonally Blglervllle dates back almost as far as Revolutlonary days At the dawnlng of the nlneteenth century a htrle log school house bullded upon the Slte of the present structure housed the boys and glrls of that tlme A huge log flre place whlch occupled one end of the bulldlng and a long narrow bench extendlng the length of the room turnlshed the accommoda tlons for learning The bulldlng was called the Mxddletown School bemg the m1d point of the towns of Table Rock Arendtsvllle Bendersvllle and Heldlersburg In 1859 just before the great C1v1l War a new bu1ld1ng was erected 1n place of the old log structure whlch had braved the storms w1th1n and w1th out of more than a half century Thls bulldlng was partly of bnck construc t1on and was consxdered modern From 1tS open doors our grand parents could have vlewed the passmg of the Confederate troops on the1r way to engage ln the great battle of Gettysburg For three days they could hear the roar and thunder of the guns seven mxles away St rrmg were those days ln the hlstory of our school What an mmportant part our 1nst1tut1on played 1n moldmg character whlch later gulded the destlnles of the town state and natlonl Full forty years the Mlddletown School catered to the educat1onal wants of the surroundlng country Wlth the laylng of the raxls of the Gettysburg name was changed from Mlddletown to Blglervxlle 1n honor of the man who was then governor of the state of Pennsylvanla In 1895 came the deslre and the demand for a larger and better school A two roomed structure was erected and was thought to be ample to care for many generatlons to come Scarce ten years had passed when further need was felt for Increased school fac1l1t1es Wlth the lncorporatlon ln 1903 of the borough the school d1str1ct obtalned xts present day lmlts Add1t10Da1 school rooms were ob tamed by rentlng avallable quarters ln the Thomas Bros Bu1ld1ng In 1914 the f1rst hlgh school course was lnstltuted Thls was a two year course the first class bemg graduated 1n 1915 The course was then changed to a three year course and later to a four year course The school IS now a fully ac credlted flrst class hlgh school Grand and glorlous as the past has been the achlevements of the hlgh school ln the last two years have over shadowed all that has gone before Wlth the guldance of a capable and progresswe Board of Educatlon the leadershlp of an efflclent and consclentlous faculty and the co operatlon of a loyal student body the standard has ever been set hlgher and Blglervllle holds the envlable reputatlon of bemg the most progresslve and best sp1r1ted school ln Adams County Our hlgh scholastlc standard our athletxc act1v1t1es our phenomenal growth are all 1nd1cat1ons of the splrlt that pervades dear old B1glerv1lle I-hgh School J D Page Fu e branch of the Philadelphia, and Reading railroad, the town grew and the
