Yesterday un ADMINISTRATION MR R D BAKER With the turn of the century educatuon un Wuse County took a strude forward From the begunnmg of the establishment of publuc schools ut seems that qualuty leaders have always been placed un posutuons of responsubuluty Mr R D Baller Superintendent of Schools from 1905 to 1909 was o natuve of Bug Stone Gap In 1909 he was succeeded by Dr J N Hullman who became the furst full time Superuntendent of Schools A natuve of Wuse County Dr Hullman was a graduate of the College of Wulluam and Mary holdung both BA and MA Degrees He entered the fueld of educatuon un 1905 and served contunuously untul 1944 Durung hus term Superuntendent Dr Hullman was unstrumentol un umprovung the curruculum as well as um provung the physucal plants From Wuse County he became Assustant Superuntendent of Vurgunua Publuc Schools and un 1922 become presudent of Emory and Henry College Here probably more than anywhere else was hus unfluence felt as an educator and a Chrustunn gentleman Hus contrubutuon to the advancement of educatuon un Vurgunua and un Southwest Vurgunua un partucular wull luve on un the luves of all those who had the privilege of lcnowung hum Sunce the turn of the century only three men have served un the capacuty of Superun tendent of Schools Dr Hillman I1909 19171 and Dr Kelly H9175 During thus span of years Bug Stone Gap has also been fortunate un havung had outstandmg men to serve as pruncupals P 9 who recall theur school days with Professor Sheppe as fe was fondly called remember most hus deep interest un furtherung education and un consuderung each unduvudual students needs Mr H L Sulfrudge a graduate of Wulluam and Mary was an outstandmg lunl: un the establishment of a strong system of education un Bug Stone Gap From Bug Stone Gap he went to Charlottesvulle Vurgunua where he became Pruncupal of Lane Hugh School and Superintendent of Schools After hus returement he taught at Randolph Macon College for Men Mr J Roy Horne a fellow graduate of Wulluam and Mary succeeded Mr Sulfrudge as pruncupal servung un thus capacity from 1929 to 1954 Both later went on DR JAMES N HILLMAN MR ROBERTH SHEPPE l9OO l908 MR J FLINT WALLER l9l2 l9l3I to do graduate work at Columbia Unuversuty Mr Horne was unfluentual un communuty and cuvuc affaurs as well as un the field of educatuon Fourness furmness loyalty and self sacrufucung unterest un hus profession all were marks of Mr Hornes term as pruncupal Mr J Flunt Waller Mr A J Wolfe Mr Owen R Easley Mr John A Huclrs and Mr Herbert H Young all served theur day as Pruncupal of Bug Stone Gap Hugh School and wull long be remembered for their part un educatuon un Bug Stone Gap Yet no history can ever be complete guvung only the maun characters Hundreds of teachers played their parts un order to produce the finished product Bug Stone Gap Hugh Not Pictured John A Hacks l909I Mr Herbert H Young H909 l9lO -R MR A J WOLFE l9l5 l9l7 MR J ROY HORNE MR HUGHL SULFRIDGE MR OWEN R EASLEY Il929l954l 'l9l9l928l Il9l8l ,nr ',.
