DINGUS Soon, we, the i959 seniors of Big Stone Gap High School, will leave our last silhouette in the halls we've trod far so long, It seems like such a short while ago that we first entered these hallowed buildings to begin the first grade. For us, this annual will be a review of the various silhouettes we have cast through these past I2 years. We remember so distinctly our first venture of the high school buildings as eighth graders. Later, as freshmen, we finally belonged , along with becoming members of the many school clubs and activities, we also realized that our days of loafing were over and that more time must be devoted to study and hard work. By our sophomore year, we seemed finally adiusted to high school life. Upon the arrival of our iunior year, we chose our class rings-the true symbol of our approaching seniorhood. To many of us, this junior year will be the most treasured and cherished of all, haw proud we were of our magazine sales which exceeded those of any previous year to date! April Love still brings a nostalgic smile to our lips in remembrance of the Prom that was of our very own planning. Still lingering in our ears are those dreadful words of those older and wiser than we, . . . not enough daisies this year . . . no daisy chain . . . Who could ever forget the sudden conversion of dismay into bliss when we discovered a vibrantly blooming daisy field and wildly realized that we could make the traditional daisy chain after all? We can still feel our hearts swell with pride as we carried the finished product down the aisle at graduation. Yet all did not end with the close of the school because long remembered will be the experiences gained at V, P. l. by our eight represen- tatives to Boys' and Girls' State. Finally our big day arrived-we became long-coveted residents of the senior home room. lm- printed permanently in our memories is the anticipated planning for the annual Washington trip, which we transformed, with the help of our sponsors, Miss Cox, Miss Dingus, and Mr. Gibbs, into a Washington plus New York tour, We can still picture the bus with the traditional sign Washington 8t New York or bust. lf in later years, we ever return to either of these sites, possibly the silhouettes from our trip will be the most prominent in our minds. Distinctly ringing in our ears are our dramatic efforts brought to life through all the glory of the presentation of the lines of our senior play, Ten O'Clock Scholar, amid the excitement of the greasepaint, anxious searching for the prampters' assurance, and all the genuine backstage confusion. Our thoughts iourneyed to a more humble and serious vein as we listened hopefully to the simple but beautifully inspiring words of Rev. James Uimmiei Smith at our class sermon. Perhaps our most distinct silhouette was cast as we marched sedately down the aisle for the last time to the swelling and maiestic strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' Our minds will lang reflect the vision of the proud, beaming, but somewhat sad smiles of our parents as we each received that precious diploma. We are glad that our loved ones and acquaintances will always recall the last year spent at Big Stone Gap High School as one of the most successful and ioyous. How honored we feel to be that distinguished class! All these shadows will never again be tangible or physically visible to us, but we can always reminisce and leaf through the pages of our annuals to refresh our memories and again bring to mind those abstract but perpetual silhouettes that we have left. They are magic silhouettes-ones brilliant only to the participants who helped make them possible, and only to those who are reminded of happy, carefree days gone by. With our earnest and dedicated prayers, the Hand from Above will mold and guide our future shadows and imprints to pacify, enliven, and attempt to influence those around us.
