LOIS BLANTON Treasurer . ,,L,, .. BILL STONE Blanton, Potter, Callahan, Stone Sponsor LORA E. DINGUS Soon, we, the i959 seniors of Big Stone Gap High School, will leave our last silhouette in the halls we've trod far so long, It seems like such a short while ago that we first entered these hallowed buildings to begin the first grade. For us, this annual will be a review of the various silhouettes we have cast through these past I2 years. We remember so distinctly our first venture of the high school buildings as eighth graders. Later, as freshmen, we finally belonged , along with becoming members of the many school clubs and activities, we also realized that our days of loafing were over and that more time must be devoted to study and hard work. By our sophomore year, we seemed finally adiusted to high school life. Upon the arrival of our iunior year, we chose our class rings-the true symbol of our approaching seniorhood. To many of us, this junior year will be the most treasured and cherished of all, haw proud we were of our magazine sales which exceeded those of any previous year to date! April Love still brings a nostalgic smile to our lips in remembrance of the Prom that was of our very own planning. Still lingering in our ears are those dreadful words of those older and wiser than we, . . . not enough daisies this year . . . no daisy chain . . . Who could ever forget the sudden conversion of dismay into bliss when we discovered a vibrantly blooming daisy field and wildly realized that we could make the traditional daisy chain after all? We can still feel our hearts swell with pride as we carried the finished product down the aisle at graduation. Yet all did not end with the close of the school because long remembered will be the experiences gained at V, P. l. by our eight represen- tatives to Boys' and Girls' State. Finally our big day arrived-we became long-coveted residents of the senior home room. lm- printed permanently in our memories is the anticipated planning for the annual Washington trip, which we transformed, with the help of our sponsors, Miss Cox, Miss Dingus, and Mr. Gibbs, into a Washington plus New York tour, We can still picture the bus with the traditional sign Washington 8t New York or bust. lf in later years, we ever return to either of these sites, possibly the silhouettes from our trip will be the most prominent in our minds. Distinctly ringing in our ears are our dramatic efforts brought to life through all the glory of the presentation of the lines of our senior play, Ten O'Clock Scholar, amid the excitement of the greasepaint, anxious searching for the prampters' assurance, and all the genuine backstage confusion. Our thoughts iourneyed to a more humble and serious vein as we listened hopefully to the simple but beautifully inspiring words of Rev. James Uimmiei Smith at our class sermon. Perhaps our most distinct silhouette was cast as we marched sedately down the aisle for the last time to the swelling and maiestic strains of Pomp and Circumstancef' Our minds will lang reflect the vision of the proud, beaming, but somewhat sad smiles of our parents as we each received that precious diploma. We are glad that our loved ones and acquaintances will always recall the last year spent at Big Stone Gap High School as one of the most successful and ioyous. How honored we feel to be that distinguished class! All these shadows will never again be tangible or physically visible to us, but we can always reminisce and leaf through the pages of our annuals to refresh our memories and again bring to mind those abstract but perpetual silhouettes that we have left. They are magic silhouettes-ones brilliant only to the participants who helped make them possible, and only to those who are reminded of happy, carefree days gone by. With our earnest and dedicated prayers, the Hand from Above will mold and guide our future shadows and imprints to pacify, enliven, and attempt to influence those around us. 'Q 4 1 ml gi JUNIORS Juniors- for the c'ass of l96O, that mystic wcrzi rwo'ds a double meaning Be- sides our accomplishment of having successfully comp ctcrd eleven years of teaious work, we ho'd with pwde thc- honor of being the lat' yunior class from Big Stone Gap Hgh School. This fact seemed evident to ai frcrn our first entrance into the iunior room, our home for a year, to cur last venture down the aisle of the auditorium with the ultimate of the daisy chain in our hands. Although we deemed it difficult at first, we finally chose a class ring. Twelve of our classmates upheld the honor of the last of tne Buccaneers on the gridiron, and four represented us on the basketball court. After midfterm, we began to appropriate money for the SCHOOL BELL and the .lunior-Senior Prom. For two weeks we played the roles of magazine salesmen, setting a record with Sl,369 in magazine sales. Bake sales also helped to build up our bank account for the big event. Despite all the music, laughter, and gaiety of our long-anticipated prom, we couldn't help feeling a little sentimental at the thought of this being the last prom to take place in our gym. Our few little flaws and impediments only made this night more of an occasion which we'll always remember. After a raucous day of dashing through fields, ripping up scores of daisies, then rushing them to the gym to mold them into a miraculously fabulous daisy chain, we finally succeeded in proudly accompanying the seniors down the aisle for our last journey in that direction. Perhaps even then, we were conscious of the necessary guidance of our sponsors, Miss Read and Miss Broadwater. With their willing assis- tance, we feel that we have made this a red letter year. SOPHOMORES We, a group of students, entered the school year of '58-'59 with exalted ideas and towering pride, we were sophomoresl However, as work gat under way, we lost our feeling of superiority and seif-confidence and began to realize that we had to put forth much effort and steady application in order to keep our standards high and to make progress toward our goals, Much credit for this change of attitude is due to the patient understanding and tactful guidance of our sponsors, Miss Cox, Miss Mullins, and Mrs. Brooks. And next year we will be iuniors! FRESHMEN On August 26, l958, ninety-one eager students heartily bounded into the three ninth grade homerooms. Most of us were overwhelmed with anticipation of our ap- proaching high school years, but others were saddened at the thought of our summer vacation being over, especially when we thought of all the studying and preparation lying ahead. As the rush of the school year progressed, we grew to greatly appreciate the patience and understanding of our sponsors, Mrs. Hobbs, Mr. Paye, and Mr, Munsey. Many of us have become prosperous, successful students, and several of our classmates have ioined the various high school clubs, probably the greatest privilege of our becoming freshmen. We still reminisce and dream of our unforgettable experiences of the past years, but we are looking forward to the remaining years of high school which offer so many opportunities. fw HMM PUBLICATIONS AND ORGANIZATIONS , 5 W I' 7 , II YL, SJ Jvyffb J-,J Off' QW, ,'I I, SCHOOL B LLL STAN? As the first whistle was blown, and the drummers prepared to beat out the cadence, seventy- two hearts throbbed with anticipation of a new school year. The second whistle sounded, and they started down the long road that would lead them some hundred miles and through many thousands of notes. Days and nights with tedious hours of practice awaited them, but each adventure, providing new thrills and goals to accomplish, made it all pay off. h In summer and early fall it seemed that the favorite hangout was the baseball field at Bullitt Park, where, under the direction of Mr, Sam McChesney, the drill maneuvers for the coming football games were worked out and rehearsed. At practically all of the games the Buccaneer Band was on the spot , supplying pep for the team and flashy entertainment for the spectators. One of the annual highlights for the band, the trip to the Bristol Festival, requires many long hours of practice. However, all this work yielded a Division I trophy. Drum maior, Johnny Wilson, and the maiorettes received Division II trophies. Immediately following football season, headquarters were switched to the band room and con- cert work began. Much had to be accomplished in order to attend the annual Regional, held at Richlands. Eleven members, a record number, participated in the Western Division of the Virginia All-State Band at Danville. The full band presented a concert in April and provided live music in the commencement exercises. All in all, it was a most successful year. However, nothing could have been accomplished without the limitless patience and guidance of Mrs. McChesney, better known as Mrs. Mac. Hats off and three cheers for her!!! The money taken from the Hallo- ween Carnival booth was used to buy Junior Classical League pins for the second year class. First on the calendar of events was the election of officers, with the president, secretary, and treasurer chosen from the second year class, and the vice president from the first year class. Club pins and guards were immediately ordered and awarded to the second year members. Since Miss Scott, our last year's sponsor, has taken over full time work in the library, Mr. Burrall Paye, a graduate of Lincoln Memorial University, has been named as her successor, With his limitless ideas and enthusiasm, Mr. Paye has stepped in most efficiently to fill the vacancy. The highlight of the year was the annual presentation of the Christmas program. Dressed in gay costumes, the Canquerors attemp- ted to portray to the student body what a Christmas celebration in Spain might be like. To procure the proper atmosphere, Music de la Espanola was provided by a group of Spanish musicians from the club. The Fiesta consisted of a group of acts common to Spain, such as the Toreador and his bull, the traditional Hat Donce, and Poncho and Cisco. A group of vaqueros presented a song of the ranch life, and our Senorita Maria Garcia gave an excellent presentation of Que Sera. To create the true reverent spirit of Christmas, Lee Kelly, an honorary Conquistador from V, P. I., began the final portion of the program by singing O Holy Night. This was followed by the Ma- donna scene, featuring Phyllis Peterson as the Madonna, accompanied by a group singing Silent Night in Spanish. The annual picnic, always a highlight of the year because of the initiation of new members, brought to a close another successful year. This being the third and final year forthe Buccaneer Junior Varsity, the boys turned in an 8 win and 7 loss season, improv- ing the record of last year. Under the able direction of Coach Stallard, the boys managed to make progress and to win games. The important thing of Junior Varsity is the training, mastering drills, teaching fundamentals, and, above all, preparing them for the step up to Varsity basketball. The boys have shown hustle throughout the year and should be the future stars at Powell Valley High School. The most exciting J. V. ball game of the year was one with Ervinton. After two overtime periods, the game was called into a sudden-death playoff, which Ervinton won. The usual starting line-up consisted of Roy Fields and Eddie Duffy as forwards, Thomas Morris as center, and John D, Williams and Wayne Maxfield as guards.
