Club 2 Senior Class Class of 1957— for years we had realized that would be our title, and at last it was a reality! After traveling with faltering steps down the path of sub-freshmen, we safely arrived as Freshmen. As Freshmen, we took our first steps into the mysterious pages of Algebra, Latin, and Literature Books. By our Sophomore year we had our feet firmly in the paths of our school ' s activities. Mrs. Brooks and Miss Cox took our class on an unprecedented picnic, skating party to Valley Lake. The fall of 1955 found our feet under desks in the Junior rooms. Selecting class rings, selling magazines (a record high sale), presenting a skit in assem- bly, picking daisies, making a daisy chain, decorating the gym for the prom, The Eleventh Flour Melody — all these activities of Juniors we met and conquered. In July, Fonda Potter, Joanne Macauley, Toby Perdue, Nancy Hagy, and Don Garrison left footprints on the campus of Virginia Polytechnic Institute as they studied Virginia Government for a week at Girls ' and Boys ' States. In August, thirty-seven of us made a path to the Senior room, from which Miss Dingus gently guided our way as Seniors. After months of waiting, our class rings finally arrived. Although Deloris Tomlinson dropped and Doug McDaniel transferred to John I. Burton, midterm found most of us farther down the path. After exams, we elected Senior Superlatives and averaged grades for class standing. The Class of 1957 had many of the personalities of our school: Parky Tucker, Captain of the Buccaneer Football Team; All District Guard, Don Garrison; Good Citizen, Joanne Macauley; Drum Majors, Martha McKaughan and Joanne Macauley; All State Band Members, Nancey Belle Edmonds, Martha McKaughan, Joanne Macauley, and Jackie Estep. April twelfth, we presented our play which had been ably directed by Misses Faith Cox and Billie Jean Scott. April nineteenth, we were racing for school to catch the WpOB bus for our nation ' s Capitol. May third, we were tripping to the light fantastic at the Junior-Senior Prom. May nineteenth, as we marched down the aisle to Promp and Circum- stance to our Class Sermon, which Rev. George T. Welsch delivered, we realized we were quickly nearing the end. When we received our diplomas on May 23, we earnestly hoped that we had . . laughing, left behind us— footprints on the High School stairs . As we, the future leaders of our nation prepare to be intelligent, useful citizens, we pray that with God ' s aid we may guide our steps Heavenward. -V ' Junior Class As the school year 1956-57 began, we, the Junior Class, reached the year that promised so much. As time quickly sped by, we saw all our hopes and dreams brought to reality with the help of Miss Broadwater and Miss Read, our sponsors. When football season opened, many of our boys participated in foot- ball. These were: Wayne Coomer, Johnny Collins, Lee Kelly, Dicky Fogg, Jim Buchanan, Edmond Allman, Bill Cochran, and Lewis Williams (manager Many junior boys also played basketball and baseball. Our class was well represented in all of the school activities. The time finally arrived when we were to select our class rings. The decision was difficult, but we finally selected a ring we shall wear with pride. Soon after mid-term we found ourselves selling magazines to provide us with funds for the School Bell next year and for the Junior-Senior Prom. Preparation for the prom took many tiring hours of work. As we made the Daisy Chain and participated in graduation exercises, we realized that in the not too distant future we would be the seniors walking with sedate steps to our graduation. MEMORIAL LIBRARY BIG STONE GAP, VIRGINIA summits On August 28, 1956, sixty-three students marched back to the good ole ' school to begin nine months of learning, to renew old acquaintances, and to make new friends. We had done this many times before, but this time was different - we were Sophomores. We were filled with pride as we took our places in the school activities. We would like to recognize the following Sophomores who lettered on the gridiron this fall: Bucky Bentley, Sam Davidson, Jack Horner, and Bill Lile. We are very proud of Billy Palo Potter, our class president, who was the captain of the varsity basketball team. Bucky Bentley and Jack Horner lettered on the varsity basketball team; Gene Callahan and Roger Whited lettered on the junior varsity team. Our girls were also very well represented in the Hi-Y Club, the Band, Glee Club, and various other school activities. We realize that our fun and experiences could not and would not have been possible without the guidance of our sponsors, Mrs. Brooks and Miss Cox. We want to thank them for their patience, kindness, and for making this an unforgettable year for us. mm As we entered our Freshman year on August 27, 1956, we realized we were on the threshold of a new career - high school. We prepared for this career with high hopes and eager spirits. For the right beginning, we entered any activities for which we were eligible. There were eighteen in the Glee Club, three in the F. H. A., two in the Camera Club, six on the Safety Patrol, and twenty-five in the Roman Club. In the sports world we were also out in the front. Three freshmen lettered in football, and several were on the Junior Varsity basketball team. Without the patience and guidance of Mr. Polly, Mr. Maddux, and Miss Read, we would have been unable to have made our Freshman year such a memorable one. mm ciDt We, the students of the Eighth Grade, have thoroughly enjoyed the change from grade school. Having five subjects instead of seven, having more teachers, and changing classes have made the Eighth Grade an unforgettable experience for us. We realize that as we entered the Eighth Grade we were beginning the last lap of public school education. Our sponsors were: Miss Gilliam, Miss Howard, Mrs. Whitt, and Mr. Gibbs, who were always ready and willing to help us. Last fall a new class was added for us, and it is called Enrichment. At first the idea baffled us - a new subject which was to include a great range of topics, such as career planning, vocational surveys, personality discussions, poetry. Wise County History, music appreciation, home economics, speech, and viewing some good films - but as the months passed, we realized that there was much good in it for us. Besides a noticible drop in failures our teachers told us that we were broadening our interest fields and improving in many ways. We are eagerly looking forward to our high school years and hoping that they will be happy, profitable ones. We know that our future education lies ahead, and we shall prepare ourselves to meet the hard work and many problems which we shall have to face. Getting out the vote Class presidents speak flSSflBLY Our assembly series this year was designed to give a number of students an opportunity to participate. In scheduling the pro- grams the faculty advisers, Miss Scott, Miss Cox, and Mr. Gibbs, tried to use all of the clubs and organizations in high school, to use visiting ministers, and to take advantage of the holidays, special occasions, and talent within our school. Our first assembly program set the stage for the many to follow. Former students who were attending various colleges were invited to explain to the student body the many phases of college life. The Millettes, the Milligan College trio featuring our own Patsy Masters, gave the first talent assembly. All classes except the Senior class gave talent shows with acts ranging from baton twirling to playing the violin. The special occasions drew many different assembly ideas, ranging from Publications Day to a Washington-Lincoln Day program, featuring Keith Johnston delivering the Gettysburg ad- dress. Book Week was portrayed by a collection of characters straight from the best books of our library. Little did we suspect that we had a Chinese lady, a ballerina, and Tom Sawyer in our midst, but out of our student body they came. Our clubs and organizations presented programs which were informative, as well as entertaining. On the Friday following the Band Festival in Bristol, a proud band presented highlights from the festival. Our Hi-Y Club participated in our assemblies by giving us al- ways the emphasis on the important element in life— religion. The Glee Club did its annual caroling on the last school day before Christmas. Los Conquistadores gave its annual Christmas pro- gram, Fiesta en Espana , featuring Carolyn Fugate as the lovely Madonna. Richard Lloyd, Rev. Mahaffey, Rev. Bill Clark, Rev. Terry, Rev. Manship, and Rev. C. W. Dye. It seemed that each one had the most interesting method of presenting his thoughts to the student body. We feel that our assembly programs have been a success in two ways. They have been informative and entertaining; they have given us the opportunity to be a part of the programs.
