BILL HOLDING Sponsor MISS I-ORA DINGUS Revillo Holding, Lawson, and Cooper SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Senior year! The closing chapter in the history of the forty-eight seniors during their stay at Big Stone Gap High School. As we recall the many happy events of the past years, we are delighted to report that our high school career has been very successful and one which we shall always cherish. Entering the Eighth Grade, we were dubious about moving from one class to another and taking only four subiects. But, in spite of our doubts, the year proved to be very eventful and an important step for the years to come. Our freshman year brought a closer connection with the school, as many students be- came active in the various clubs, athletics, and band. Under the leadership of Mr. Burchell Stallard and Mr. J. C. Miller, our sponsors, we felt we had overcome our many problems. You Name lt, an assembly program consisting of a series of acts, ushered in our sopho- more year. Later in the year we performed the impossible by having a class party which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. We know we shall always remember our sophomore year and the loyal and capable guidance of our sponsors, Miss Faith Cox and Mrs. Wilma Brooks. Up one end of town and down another a group of busy Juniors were selling magazine subscriptions. Needless to say, we were those Juniors and we had some record sales that year, which year proved to be a busy and happy one. We had a great number of problems, one being the prom, but these were soon solved with Miss Sarah Broadwater and Mrs. Betty Neeley to direct us. Then came the busy days when we were out picking daisys and blisters! We were more than amply rewarded when we escorted the Seniors down the aisle knowing, that we too would soon be Seniors. Myra Smith, Virginia Miller, Charlotte Reasor, Jo Ann Burke, Russell Cooper, Bob Ham- blem, Frank Pannell, and Forrest McCoig were our chosen representatives to Girls' State and Boys' State at V. P. l. where they studied our government for a week and also enioyed many other activities. In late August of '54, fifty students rushed for the cherished Senior Room, but before the year was to be finished, we lost two of our members, David Mcliaughn and Sarah Moles. This year's class included six of the first kindergarten class that Mrs. Gordon taught, lust twelve years ago. Soon afterward, we received our long awaited class rings, of which we were very proud. Our senior play was a big attraction, much tothe credit of our directors, Miss Faith Cox, Miss Billie Jean Scott, and Mrs. Betty Neeley. More than two thirds of our class took advantage of the W7OB trip to Washington. Under the guidance of our sponsor, Miss Dingus, the year was indeed a successful one. Myra Smith was chosen as our best citizen. She represented our school in the best citizen- ship contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Then came graduation, our final participation in high school. After commencement, the alumni gave us a magnificient feast-a banquet. Leaving the banquet and making our sepa- rate ways home, many of us thought back to the minute we stepped up to receive our di- plomas. We then knew that we were the builders of America and that with the knowledge we had gained in the past twelve years here and with God's help, we would always strive to make America a better place in which to live.
