Tilt SCHOOL BtLLon 95 3 How can we best tell the story of a year at Big Stone Gap High School? As we pass through it s gates — to learning, to extra curricular activities, and to play, we have made an earnest effort to recapture those memories which will be indelible for all of us. If we have succeeded in only partly recording for posterity that which has taken place beyond its gates, so that future glimpses of the book will stir fond memory, we feel the attempt has been worth while. Presented By SENIOR CLASS BIG STONE GAP HIGH SCHOOL Big Stone Gap, Virginia Q BASCOM SLEMP MEMORIAL LIBRARY BIG STONE GAP, VIRGINIA DtDICflTION For its untiring efforts in sponsoring our annual tour to Wash- ington, we, the Seniors of 1953, with the deepest gratitude and appreciation, dedicate this Twenty-fourth Edition of the School Bell to the Camera Club of Big Stone Gap High School. KIN GRAHAM Secretary KYLE COOPER Treasurer CARL COLLINS Sponsor MISS LORA DINGUS SENIOR CLASS HISTORY As we forty students complete our high school education and take our places among the alumni, we look wistfully back over our happy years of school. Only twelve of us started in school together. Those were: Barbara Bishop, Johnny Bradburne, Kyle Cooper, Bob Daugherty, Fay Dickenson, Kin Graham, Harriet Holton, Patsy Masters, Shirley Messer, Peggy Reach, Joyce Sargent and Ray Seale. The rest of us joined the class at different times. After eight years of preparation, we proudly claimed the distinction of Freshmen. With the hope of becoming Seniors, we pressed forward to the mark. Realizing that all work and no play might make us dull, we devoted much of our spare time to extra curricula activities. We were well represented in Football, Basketball, Baseball, and the Band. The Sophomore year quickly passed and before we realized it we were Juniors, selling magazines to help with the expense of our annual, decorating the gym for the Prom, selecting our class rings and making a daisy chain. We were represented at Girls ' State and Boys ' State at Blacksburg by Martha Jane Powers, Harriet Holton, Patsy Masters, Kyle Cooper, Bob Daugherty, and Raye Seale. Our senior year proved to be the busiest and happiest. The arrival of our rings brought a long antici- pated joy. We broke the conventions by having blue and red stones in our rings. Then during the Easter vacation came the trip to Washington which was indispensable to our education and enjoyment. Again we went to the Prom, but this time as guests. Peggy Reach was crowned Queen and Gerald Taylor King in an elaborate ceremony. Mary Jane Robinette was elected Best Citizen to represent our school in the contest sponsored by the D. A. R. We had much fun displaying our dramatic ability in a one-act play featuring Bill Locke as the doctor; Ray Seale with his three loves, Peggy Bledsoe, Sue Midkiff, and Mary Jane Robinette; and Martha Jane Powers as Fungus, the colored janitor. This was only a prelude to our final production, the Senior Play, YOU ' RE THE DOCTOR, in which Bill Locke again scores a hit. It was well received by the audience and we had fun producing it. As graduation neared, there was much preparation to be done and we were also about to enter a new phase of our lives. We now must use our acquired knowledge to reset our goals and face life on our own. We will always cherist our Alma Mater and hold its memories within our hearts. High rang out once again summoning us as it has for many years. Once again we filed into our classrooms, but this time with the dignified feeling of knowing that we were Juniors. We felt sure that under the faithful guidance of Miss Broadwater and Miss Bellamy we would have a most successful year, and we were so right!! In October after careful examination of rings from two companies, we unanimously decided on an oval ring with our choice of a blue or red set. These will be worn with honor in our Senior year. When football season began this year we had quite a few who participated in this well known and loved sport. They were: Johnny Dorton, Garnett Gilliam, Johnny Boston, Jimmy Stewart, Jack Sizemore, Henry Spangler, Jim Snodgrass, Ronald Kelly, George Litton, Ken Myers, Wayne Slemp, Sonny Horner, David McKaughan, Gary Clark and Don McQuery. Later, as basketball practice began, six of our students, Doris Morelock, Sonny Horner, Jack Mahan, George Litton, Jim Snodgrass and Johnny Boston participated in this sport. We were well represented in the different activities as well as the sports field. The Camera Club claimed seve n of the class and four were chosen for the Safety Patrol. Meanwhile, quite a few more took an active part in the Band, Key Club, F.H.A., Glee Club, and Spanish Club. In May we entertained the Seniors with Junior-Senior Prom which was very success- ful and shall become a pleasant memory for one and all. The climax of our Junior year was our participation in the Commencement exercises. As we walked down the aisle carrying the daisy chain, we realized that when school opened next year we would be Seniors. With the help and encourage- ment of our sponsors. Miss Brewer and Miss Cox, we feel we have accomplished much and have had a very happy year together. We learned in the Ninth Grade that participating in the school activities was very important. With this in mind we began the fall term with the following boys on the football team: Filmore Tucker, Bill Holding, Don Giles, Frank Pannell, Forrest McCoig, Harvey Graham, Larry Wright, Bobby Hamblen , Rus- sell Cooper, Stan Yonce, Bobby Wheeler, and Martin Revilla. We also had ten to go out for basketball. With the organizing of the various clubs we were well represented by having fourteen in the Glee Club, eighteen in the Roman Club, six in the Camera Club, five in the Key Club, six in the Spanish Club, three in the F.H.A. Mary John Mayhew became a member of the Three Plus One. Bill Holding and Mary John Mayhew were our representatives on the Safety Patrol. HARRIET HOLTON Treasurer BARBARA MERCER Sponsor JACK H. GIBBS With the dream of another trip to Washington, the Camera Club earnestly began another money-raising campaign to help the Seniors on their way. The WOB-5 (Washington or Bust: trip number five) has become one of the most familiar slogans at Big Stone Gap High School. The members have worked diligently and willingly throughout the year. Some of their many tasks have been the selling of peanuts at football games, the sponsoring of bake sales and movies. Mr. Jack H. Gibbs has been the capable sponsor of the Camera Club since its organization in 1947. All members able to attend will be sent to the District Convention which will probably be held in Nashville.
