Of the thirty-three of us only eighteen have traveled the road together. They are: Carl Akens, Elsie Bloomer, Annis Fletcher, Barbara Joe Fletcher, Barbara Gilliam, Jim Hamblen, Marie Harris, Betty Hill, Dane Kite, Peggy Lambert, Jodha Ann Mullins, Bruce Scalf, Verla Jo Smitherman, Ralph Snodgrass, Bobby True, Patty Lynn Weatherly, Jimmie Whisman, and Peggy Jo Wilson. While we were in grade school we looked forward to and dreamed of the day we would enter high school. When we entered the eighth grade we realized that our dream was near. Finally, the great day arrived, we were Freshmen. lt was then that we began to feel important. We began to take an active part in the many school activities, The next year motrimony was the choice of several girls. Some of the boys joined the colors to fight for our country and freedom. Our Freshman and Sophomore years flew by and before we knew it we were dreamy Juniors. That year proved to be the most exciting yet. We worked hard selling magazines to help pay for our annual when we would become Seniors. As an important step toward becoming Seniors, we chose our rings which were yellow gold with either white, yellow, or pink gold rectangular tops with the BSG crest. We shall never forget the fun we had decorating the gym for the Junior-Senior Prom. ln athletics we were also quite active. The boys and girls of our class won the championship in the class basketball tournament. The last but most exciting event that year, was going to pick daisies for the daisy chain, a task which took almost all day, Late that afternoon a weary bunch of Juniors trudged home to get ready for the commencement exercises which took place the same night, During the summer between our Junior and Senior years Betty Lou Hill, Jodha Mullins, Jim Hamblen, and Dane Kite went to Girls' and Boys' State held at V. P. l. A week of study of state government by these was made possible by different organizations of the town. Then our dream came true. We achieved one of our life's ambition the day we became Seniors, Late this fall those long awaited rings arrived. Great was the excitement on that day. After much ado we selected our invitations and we then felt like graduation day was not far away. The Junior-Senior Prom proved to be the usual gala affair with James Ashe and Marie Harris reigning supreme as King and Queen. After days of practice the Senior play was ready for presentation under the direction of our sponsor Lora Dingus and Mrs. Winston Giles. lt was well received by the audience. Then those of us who had not taken part in a previous WOB's trip to Washington were given the opportunity to go. That trip holds many memories for us. Patty Lynn Weatherly was elected the best citizen. She represented our school in the Best Citizenship contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Then graduation night came and with it was the annual Alumni Banquet, which was the last event we were to take part in as Seniors. As we close our books of knowledge with a sigh and prepare to put what we have learned to use, we make a bow out of high school life forever. This year will hold many happy memories for Us because it was crowded with many activities as well as the usual grind of study. ln October, after examining rings from two different representatives we made our choice, an oval ring with a blue or red set. This we will proudly wear as Seniors. Our class was well represented in sports. Philip Kinder, Johnny Bradburne, Bob Daughtery, Kin Graham, Gerald Taylor, Fred Statzer, and Kyle Cooper were on the football squad. Those who went out for basketball were: Harriet Holton, Faye Dick- enson, Martha Powers, Joan Sargent, Joyce Sargent, Kin Graham, Philip Kinder, Johnny Bradburne, and Gerald Taylor. The Key Club claimed three of our members. Several participated in the Camera Club, Glee Club, Varsity Club, Band, F.H.A., and Safety Patrol. Five of our members served on the Jolly Roger Stait. Barbara Mercer was elected as our reporter. ln April we entertained the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom which was well re- ceived and quite a successful event. When we made the daisy chain for final exercises, we began to realize we now faced that long awaited dream of becoming o Senior. eff its CTA!! We have worked hard and our efforts have brought us success. Our sponsors, Coach Stallard, Mr. Miller, and Mr. Dorton, have helped us greatly and contributed much toward our success. We realized that taking part in the school activities would make our work in- teresting and our freshman days something to remember. Filmore Tucker and Carrie Lou Jeter were elected to the Safety Patrol, and we were represented in the Camera Club by Mary John Mayhew, and Filmore Tucker. We contributed thirteen members to the Glee Club, thirteen to the Band, and ten to the F.l-l.A. Club. With the approach of the football season, our interests were turned toward that sport. We were represented by Richard Belton, Bill Holding, Jr., Forrest McCoig, Martin Revilla, Filmore Tucker, Frank Pannell, Don Giles, and Cammy Edmonds who were ready and willing to do their duty as members of the football team. GARNETT Glll-lAM FRED STATZER CLIFFORD HALL As vacation time passed and another year began, football season was here. The Buccaneers, under the capable leadership of Coaches Burchell Stallard and J. C. Miller, had a most successful season. With eight returning lettermen to build around, the Bucs soon developed a fast hard-hitting T formation team. After defeating Coeburn in the opening game, the team rolled over the opposition to the tune of six wins and two losses. The Buccaneers were also awarded the sportsmanship trophy which is given each year to the team within the District having the highest sportsmanship percentage as decided by the officials. Big Stone Gap led all the teams with an average of 9892. Our successful season may be attributed to splendid teamwork, de- termination, and excellent supervision. The Bucs had some boys who received special honors for their outstanding ability. Eugene Rutherford and Johnny Dorton were selected for positions on the All-District first team while Jennings Scroggs made a second team position and Garnett Gilliam and James Allman made third team positions. In addition, Jim- my Whisman and Bobby True got honorable mention. The starting line-up usually consisted of Carl Smith, and James All- man, ends, Eugene Rutherford and Fred Statzer, tackles, Jimmy Whisman, center, Jennings Scroggs and Bobby True, guards, Gary Clark, quarter- back, Johnny Dorton and Don Giles, halfbacks, and Garnett Gilliam, fullback. These and Philip Kinder, Kin Graham, Don McQuery, Gerald Taylor, Clifford Hall, Filmore Tucker, and Johnny Bradburne qualified for letters. Miller to start the season with a new team, The team, using the fast-break on offense and a zone on defense, early proved that they were a Hghting team. The Bucs considered their upset victory over their arch-rival, Appa- lachia, the high light ot the season. The starting line-up usually consisted of Philip Kinder and Jack Mahan, forwards, Jim Hamblen and Kin Graham, guards, and Jack Masters at center.
