LORA onsieus 5 3, 3 -ss -L . 2 .s. ft Senior Class History As we Seniors stop to look back over our school days together, it seems but a short time since we were struggling with our A B C's and trying to learn to sit still. . As we entered high school, some of the members of our class had dropped out, but new ones came in to take their places. Those who have remained together all twelve years are: J. B. Beverly, Harold Baker, Marilyn Fair Barker, Reba Coomer, Nancy Holmes, Henry Laster, Ralph Mullins, Bob Morris, Joanne Masters, Barbara Lane, Joe Rush, Frank Reeder, Bill Wolfe, Christine Reach, Arvella Smith and Alma Trent. When we were in the eighth grade, our girls won the basketball class tournament. Our Sponsors that year were Mr. Gibbs and Mrs. Giles. During our Freshman and Sophomore years, Coach Fitchko was our Sponsor. We will always remem- ber him for helping us over all the humps. At this time we had several new members to ioin our class. As Juniors we really began to look forward to becoming Seniors and graduating. We sold magazines in order to help with the expense of our annual, and with much excitement chose our class rings. Then with the help of Miss Broadwater, our Sponsor, we worked hard on the Junior-Senior prom to make it a success, which it undoubtedly was. Then as last, we became dignified Seniors . This year will probably hold more memories than any other. We received our class rings, ordered our invitations, went to Washington, and with plenty of good hard work, and the help of our Sponsor, Miss Dingus and Mrs. Giles we presented our Senior play, which was a big success. Our class this year was most outstanding in sports. Ten boys lettered in football. Carl Jessee and A. L. Rutherford made All District first team. Joe Rush received a trophy for the best blocker on the team and Brownie Polly received an award for the most valuable man on the team. Brownie Polly, Bill Wolfe, John David Revilla, Carl Jessee and Gentry Scroggs represented our class in basketball. John David made All County third team and Carl Jessee received honorable mention. in our class we will always remember, Gentry, singing, Marilyn Fair, talking, Doris Wells, laughing, R. J. Neeley, studying, Henry Laster and his good looks, Barbara and Joe Ann as our class athletes, and last but not least, Brownie Polly and Marilyn Fair Barker, our King and Queen. As we close the pages of our high school days, we are now facing new experiences of life and as we try to make the most of these experiences, we will always keep with us and treasure the memories of our high school days together. Junior Class The Junior Class of 1949-'50 had a happy year with Miss Broadwater as the home room teacher and counselor. The long awaited event of selecting our rings finally came. We chose a beautiful round ring which we can wear proudly as seniors. Our class was well represented in sports with Lee Roy Phillips, Jimmy Gilliam, Eugene Bentley, Bill Wilson, and Bobby Buckles on the football team. Joe Gorley served as manager. Mary Beth Orr was elected one of the cheerleaders. Phillips, Buckles and Bentley were also on the basketball team. On the girls' team were Nadine Gilliam, Alma Trent, Nell Laster, and Ruth Wells. We had several members of our class in the band. Those were Nadine Gilliam, Nell Laster, Callie Anne Coughlin, Tommy Vaughn, Mary Jane Miles, and Doris Carter. Mary Jane and Callie Anne were members of the All-State band at Radford. Juniors who held positions on the School Bell Staff were W. H. Clark, Jr., Callie Anne Coughlin, Jimmy Murphy, and Bernice Gibson. The ones elected from our class to serve on the Jolly Roger Staff were Faye Mc- Query, Callie Anne Coughlin, W. H. Clark, Jr., Jimmy Murphy, Katherine Smith, and Bob Buckles. Many of us joined the different school clubs. Among these clubs were the Glee Club, Key Club, Latin Club, Camera Club, Varsity Club and the Home Economics Club. Billy Joe Kirk, Mary Beth Orr, and Ruth Wells were members of the Safety Patrol. At the end of school we planned and gave the Junior-Senior Prom. Now, we can claim the title of Dignified Seniors. Besides learning to be better citizens and students, we have completed several worthy pro- iects. Some of the more important ones are the following: l. Sponsored a party for the high school. 2 Helped Kiwanis sponsor a tonsil clinic for under-privileged children, in which twenty-five children's tonsils were successfully removed. 3. Worked in the concession stand for the Kiwanians at the annual singing convention in June. 4. Set up our own concession stand at the Kiwanis sponsored Horse Show on the 4th of July. 5 Fed two underprivileged children in the lunch room throughout the school year. 6. Sponsored a hayride for the Key Clubbers and their dates. 7. Collected toys, clothing, and food which were put into baskets for families. We sent delegates to the District Convention in Louisville, Kentucky and to the National Convention in Columbus, Ohio. The Louisville Con- vention delegates were Brownie Polly, John David Revilla, Carl Jessee, Joe Rush, and Carl Akens. The Columbus Convention delegates were Brownie Polly, Bill Wolfe, W. H, Clark, Bobby Snodgrass, and Bobby Buckles. The outstanding social aFfair of the year was our annual charter night banquet on March 9, i950. We had Mr. Lee Campbell, treasurer of Kiwanis international, from Middlesboro, Kentucky as our guest speaker. C OACHES STARNES and STALLARD The Varsity Club, formerly the Monogram Club, has had a very successful year. Only those persons who have earned a letter in a competitive sport or been elected cheerleader may be a member of the Varsity Club, and only those persons who have earned a letter may be authorized to wear one. This year the Club held concessions during the County Basketball Tournament in order to buy markers for the football field. With the completion of football and basketball season the following were initiated into the Club: James Ashe, Jennings Scroggs, Stuart Mahaffey, Jimmy McFalIs, Darrel Collins, Henry Laster, Fred Statzer, Eugene Rutherford, Harold Baker-Manager of the Football team, Barbara Gilliam, Mary Beth Grr, Harriet Holton, Joe Ann Nave, Ruth Wells, Myrna James, Clarice Livingston, Sara Gilliam, Nell Laster, and Christine Reach and Carl Akens, the managers of the Basketball teams. W As vacation time passed and another school year began, football season was here. Unaer the able leadership of Joe Starnes and Burchell Stallard, the Buccaneers, who had a returning letterman for nearly every position, had one of the most successful seasons in over a decade. The Bucs lost but one game which was a hardfought 7-6 defeat at the hands of Coeburn. lncidentally, Coeburn was the only team which was able to cross the Bucs' goal line the entire season. An exception- ally good season was climaxed when the Bucs battled the highly favored Appalachia Bulldogs to a score- less deadlock. This was considered a moral victory by the team and the Buc supporters. Our successful season may be attributed to splendid teamwork, inspiration, and excellent supervision. The Buccaneers had some boys who received special honors for their athletic ability. Co-Captains Carl Jessee and A. L. Rutherford were chosen on the All-District team while Joe Rush and Brownie Polly received second team positions. There were two awards for which Bucs only were eligible. Joe Rush was awarded the best-blocker trophy and Brownie Polly was presented a medal as the most-valuable player Left to right, first row: McKinley Graham, James Ashe, Henry Luster, Jimmy Gilliam, Carl Jessee, A. Through co-operation, physical titness, and sportsmanship the Buccaneers had one ot the best rec- ords in many years at the Gap. Wltort the County Tournament came around, Big Stone upset the strong Appalachia Bulldogs, the Bucs' arch rivals.
