Football was continued this year with the accent on the fun involved in playing the game. Remembering Robert “Spec” Mumpower’s successful coaching of last year, we persuaded him to direct the Buccaneers in developing the team of 1944. Reverend Elton Jones gave much of his time as an assistant coach. Our schedule included one game each with Bristol, Virginia, Bristol, Tennessee, Richlands, East Stone Gap, and two games with Appalachia. The season’s record showed two games won, one tied and three lost. From the twenty-five boys who reported for practice the following won regular positions: George Showalter as center: W. F. Carr, Jr. and Jimmy Cummings as guards: J. G. Edens and Tommy Masters as tackles: Jim Roy Noel and Eugene Kil- bourne as ends: Bo Compton as blocking back; James Grubb and Harold Gilliam as halfbacks: and Marvin Trent as fullback. After Eugene Kilbourne was injured, Jerry Potter replaced him at right end. In recognition of each player’s contribution to the season ' s success, monograms were awarded. C.
