NINTH GRADE The Freshman Class — fifty-six members strong — was organized in two groups under the leader- ship of Miss Orr and Miss McKee Throughout the year, sports held the center of our interests. During the fall. Tommy Masters, Harold Gilliam, Eugene Kilbourne, Frank Tucker and Joe Wells displayed their skill on the football field. Later Harold, Joe and Eugene reported for basketball. Julia Ashe, Ramona Clarkston, Alice Gra- ham, Shirley Lane and Joann Barker brought glory to our class with their enthusiasm and accuracy in basketball. Each of us enjoyed participation in volleyball and soft ball as part of our regular physical training program. The class boasted of Shirley Lane, majorette, in the band; Pattie Johnson, band sponsor; and of representation in the Glee Club and on the Safety Patrol. In addition to our usual classwork, some had the opportunity to gain practical training. A group of boys learned about welding, woodwork, and sheet-metal in the Wise County Workshop held at Wise, Virginia. The Home Economics girls helped regularly in the school lunch room. During the year we were sorry to lose Tommy Cress, Roy McCrary and Bill Messer to the armed forces and Jewell Clark and Buddy Snodgrass to neighboring schools. Though we are declining in number, we are still an ambitious group and will continue to prove it by our activities.
