The yearbook staff and the class of 1969 are proud to dedicate the 1969 Big Spring Yearbook to Mr. Ray C. Fry, Director of Secondary Education. During his sixteen years as both teacher and educational leader, he has devoted his efforts to the improvement of the educational program, both academically and vocationally. His loyalty to Big Spring is reflected in the many additional hours he may be observed working at his desk or supporting a student activity. His quiet, knowledgeable manner gives confidence to those with whom he works-whether they be students, teachers, or parents. We dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Fry not only to honor him for his many accomplishments, but also to assure him that we will prove worthy of his high hopes and aspirations. ORE WURD Nancy Evelhoch, C0-editor Remember regaining the Little Brown J ug from our rivals, the Greyhounds, enjoying George Washington Slept Here, winning the Blue Mountain League Wrestling Championship, losing the basketball game to Shippensburg by just two points, crying at the finale of South Pacific, and dancing to Love is Blue at the Junior Prom? These memories plus many others have been preserved for you in the 1969 Big Spring by the hard work of the Yearbook Staff. In years to come, we hope that the ups and downs of the 1968-69 school year at Big Spring will be remembered through the means of this yearbook. Susan Rosenberry, C0-editor The Staff of the 1969 Big Spring Stand together Big Spring High School Sing our praises loud Fellowship makes love grow deeper That is why weire proud. So raise your colors high, and Keep our faith in thee, With love and honor, dedication Brightly glows in song- Alma Mater, Big Spring High School Ever, always strong. SPIRIT '69 'Q , ADMINISTRATION SCHOOL BUARD Seated: Kenneth Wagner, Marlin T. Keller, secretaryg Leroy Pomraning, presidentg Donald T. McCullough, treasurerg William McCrea. Standing: R. David Hunsecker, Melvin Hench, Fredrick Bistline, Wayne Wood. This year has been a period of change and unrest in educational institutions all over the world. Much of this activity has taken the form of rebellion against society. How can this type of behavior contribute to the betterment of society? Here at Big Spring, however, we as a School District have effected many changes that we hope will contribute to the betterment of society. We are planning more changes for the next year, particularly in relation to the opening of the new Junior High School. We feel these changes are most necessary in a constantly changing world. The orderliness and cooperation in these changes are a tribute to the staff and pupils of our District. We of the Board of Education look to the Big Spring graduates to be the responsible citizens and future leaders of our area. We have, through the tax money paid by our citizens, provided the resources to help you develop into this type of citizen. ln the final analysis, it is up to you to accept this responsibility. Good luck! The future belongs to you. Sincerely. K 7 T LeRoy M. mraning President Superintendent Dear Class of 1969, In October of 1957, when you were in first grade, the Russians astounded the world by putting Sputnik I in orbit. ln December 1968, midterm in your senior year, your country orbited three astronauts in Apollo 8 around the moon, then brought them safely home. These incredible scientific advancements were accomplished during the short span of your basic education. During the same twelve years other history-making events took place. Unfortunately, many of those other recent events illustrate manis lack of respect for his fellowmanis inherent right to democracy's ideal of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness. As the moral growth of man should equal his scientific advancement, 1 would, therefore, charge you to use your education to uphold the responsibilities of your heritageg to preserve the privileges of this democratic societyg and to continue the technological successes of this age for the benefit of your fellowman. A. B. lVlcCarter Mr. A. B. MeCarter Director of Secondary Education As a class progresses through the high school grades, it establishes a unique identity regarding personality, charac- ter, and reputation. The class of 1969 will be remembered for providing the type of leadership which produced an atmosphere of har- mony and friendliness with the staff and student body of the Big Spring High School. A cooperative attitude and positive outlook permitted this class to transact .business in an efficient manner and to enjoy the extracurricular activ- ities planned by the class leaders. As you leave the security of your class and school environment, l encourage each of you to be a worthy and productive citizen in our extremely complex and technologi- cally oriented society. l hope that each graduate will enjoy peace, prosperity, and happiness as he pursues his future plans and objectives. Ray C. Fry X. Wei' X 'rvV,.W,b . .Q ,. eu .mw- Mr. Ray C. Fry I3 H igh School Principal -max 113245 ' ' ,, -' Aiwa .,.' ,. To the Class of 1969, You have now achieved the immediate victory you have sought-graduation from Big Spring High School. This has been accomplished in an ever-changing technical and complex world. The way down life's path makes many turns and has numerous rough places. Through the years man has de- veloped his intellect in - accordance with the trials and tribulations that comes with living. Loyalty to truth is its own reward. I am hoping that the years spent in school will have enabled you, each in your own way, to take your rightful place in our freedom-loving society. You are to be congratulated on having attained this important milestone and we are all justly proud of you. The first person I met was Mr. Woods, who readily adopted me as his associate. assistant advisor to the Class of '69. Being a humble spider, l could not speak- rny only means of communication was weaving things in my web. I looked upon our class with great approval when they elected their leaders: Dennis Eckman, President: Jerre Mohler, Vice-Presidentg Bonnie Mentzer. Secretary, Susan Snyder, Treasurerg and Karen McQuerry, Historian. These students were to lead our class on a new adventure, for this was now considered the first year of senior high school. As I was weaving the names in my web, a meet- ing was called to select our colors, a theme for our class dance, and the destination of our class trip. Mr. Duerr, along with Mr. Peters. Mr. Hable, Mr. Paden, Miss Reisinger, and Mr, Trump shared the burdens and headaches that always accompany guiding a class toward a successful future. On March 4, 1967, the Sophomore Hop was held in the gym which was decorated with our class colors-navy blue and powder blue. Sunshine on a Cloudy Day had been selected as the theme for our dance with the Concords playing the theme song, My Girl. I remember watching the excitement of my sophomores as they danced. Every once in a while l would have to run under a table to avoid being trampled underfootg they were indeed an enthusiastic class! I was as excited as my classmates were when the time rolled around for our class trip-Hershey was our destination. On our way there, we took a tour of the State Capitol and finally ended up at Hershey Park. The following year an atmosphere of excitement and eagerness filled my new juniors as they awaited the day of the arrival of their class rings. Once again we needed someone to guide us through a new fun-filled year, so l watched them elect a group of tip-top class leaders. Our officers were as follows: President, Danny Sheafferg Vice- President. Tom Houckg Secretary, Mary Ann Cruseyg Treasurer, Debbie Kramer, and Historian, Karen McQuerry. These officers were backed up by the following advisors: Mr. Robinson, Mr. Moh- ler, Mrs. Palmer, Miss Shatto, Mrs. Krimm, Mr. Day, and last but not least, me, the spider. l've always had great faith in the officers that my class elected. They really justified my faith when they turned the gym into the freshness of spring for the ,lunior Prom. The regal splendor that the queen and her court provided added a spark of majesty to the surrounding couples. Miss Mary Ann Crusey, our queen, reigned over her court which consisted of Miss Susan Fry, Miss Becky Jacoby, Miss Pam Lefler, Miss Carol Leh- man, Miss Karen McQuerry, and Miss Marty Naugle. The beautiful scene of the crowning of the queen will be woven into my web When I Remember Spring. Several members of our class were involved in the Junior-Senior Class Play, Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. Also during our Junior year, Carousel was a very successful all-school musical in which members of my class distinguished them- selves. Eventually, the time of our class trip rolled around, and again our destination was Hershey. Memories This trip included a tour of the Vl7illiam Penn Museum as well as a return visit to Hershey Park for the afternoon. When our seniorfyear came around, I began immediately to weave the names of our class of- ficers and advisors into my web. The leaders of our most difficult, yet happiest, year were paving a pleasant ending to our high school days. Ron Killian, President, Ben Felix, Vice-President, Susan Rosenberry, Secretary, Mary Ann Crusey, Treasurer, and Karen McQuerry, Historian led our class for our final year. Mr. Woods. Mr. Tar- rant, Mrs. Corbin, Mrs. Zeigler, and Mr. Minick assisted in making our last high school year run smoothly. In the fall of the year, I was honored to have a ride in the convertibles that the queen and her court rode in for the Homecoming football game. The honor that night was given to the queen, Miss Susan Fry, and her court: Miss Mary Ann Crusey, Miss Susan Hovetter, Miss Debbie Kramer, Miss Donna Lay, Miss Karen McQuerry, and Miss Marty Naugle. Also in the fall, Miss Marty Naugle was se- lected as the Teen Queen to represent Big Spring High School at the 1968 Youth Festival. Unfor- tunately, I was unable to attend the dance as I was still busy weaving lVIarty's name into my web. Later in the fall I was pleased to record in my odd diary that my seniors had won the audiences' hearts with the Junior-Senior Class Play-George Washington Slept Here. When November arrived, I decided I didn,t want to miss the class trip to New York so I crawled up the high steps to board the bus. The trip that had been looked forward to had finally arrived. In the fall, the Little Brown ,lug was returned to our trophy case after a startling victory over the Shippensburg Greyhounds. As a result of the great eagerness and enthusiasm of the wrestlers, they became known not only as the Big Spring wrestlers but also as the Blue Mountain League Champions. During the month of February a class trip to Washington. D.C. was arranged for the seniors. South Pacific was the next exciting event. This was an all-school musical in which everyone took part in producing a show that attracted a capacity crowd. I didn't realize that my days were almost over. The only thing that kept me living was the desire to weave the names of the graduating seniors into my web. As assistant advisor to the class of ,69, I proudly followed the procession into the auditorium and onto the stage to watch them receive their diplo- mas. Little did they realize that the diplomas would lead them toward a new and challenging road that they would have to face alone. I, alas, would no longer be with them. I must admit that as the music of Pomp and Circumstance flooded the auditorium, a few spidery tears flowed onto my web. Although none of my classmates were aware that I existed, I have always felt that I knew each one personally. My life span is running out so I must quickly weave the rest of the history of '69. If you will excuse me, I'11 go back to weaving the last name of the graduation list into my web. ,L The 1 968 Homecoming ueen Homecoming 1968 was . . . a very memorable event, especially for the queen and her court a bright chilly day with the scent of mums . . . the ecstatic moment of the crown- ing . . . the impressive halftime show the whispering crackle of fallen leaves, burnished skies . . . the thrill of winning the football game.
