Volume XX N ewville, Pennsylvania Foreword Co-editors, Connie and Nancy We, the 1963 Big Spring Yearbook Staff, present this yearbook to the students, hoping that it will serve as a lasting memory. The staff has worked diligently to create an at- mosphere that will make the students feel closer to their school. We have created this atmosphere by representing both major and minor events in the lives of typical students. This yearbook, portraying the activities of the school year l967-68, has been made possi- ble through the cooperation of the administration, the faculty, and the student body. To them, we extend our sincere appreciation. The Staff of the 1968 Big Spring Ie of Contents zstratzon ty ...... P Page Page lassmen .... Page les Page age I Page I 0 X Cn IP R N 4 Mrs. Daisy N. Oiler The staff dedicates the 1968 Big Spring Yearbook to Mrs. Daisy Oiler who is herself dedicated. Her services as our school nurse and as advisor to our Future Nurses' Club will long be remembered. Her selfless devotion to her profession has inspired many of our students to choose nursing as a career. We hope future students continue to exemplify Mrs. Oiler's humanitarianisin and thus, give her the reward she so rightly deserves. We dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Oiler in the hope that through- out the years to VOIHB, she will have fond memories of our Class. With this dedication, we also extend to her our wishes for a golden future. Cav-.ZNEDDA NHDSJUH ZS in U2 NQQDSHU 'Wi I School Board K, ' X 1 , ... rm: E E Sealed: Melvin Hench, D. T. As a group the class has successfully com- pleted an important segment of the life cycle. From this point the graduates will begin to record another phase of this cycle. The new period will require each graduate to pursue an individual program that requires originality, experience, and character. ln future years as the members of the class reminisce with the class yearbooks before them, 1 hope that the individual records will continue to show the confidence, ambition, and optimism which the pictures and words convey in the 1968 yearbook. 1 congratulate the class of 1968 and wish success and happiness for each graduate in the coming years. And you are riding on a bus from one of the cities to where you are supposed to live for a whole year? Among people about Whom you donit have any idea, with a family whose application and small picture you have just seen? Perhaps you can even imagine that you are going to be an exchange student over there. Well, of course, your biggest problem would be your language. Now maybe you can understand the feeling I had that very first clay, the day I was riding on a bus from New York to Harrisburg, where I was supposed to meet my American family for the first time, the Hunseckers. I was looking around and trying to take in everything, and to tell the truth, I was a bit worried about the kids, attitude toward me. Soon the initial excitement was all over, but each day I found a big difference between the real America and the country I had always pictured. I found that the people, especially the kids whom I had been in touch with, were much friendlier than I had thought they would be. Everybody was so friendly, kind and simply wonderful that I could hardly believe I wasnit in my own country and my own school Because of the language difficulty, it took me a while to keep up with the school work at the beginning of the year. But with the help of my family, especially my sister Donna and my new wonderful friends, my English improved a lot each day. I know that I could have never been as happy as I have been this year, if I weren't at Big Spring, among such wonderful kids. It was the best, greatest and most wonderful year I,ve ever had in my life, a year full of happiness and great experiences. I will NEVER forget my senior year in your lovely country I have never been jealous in my life, but I know that 1,11 envy your lucky next exchange student, because I know what a wonderful year he will have. I wish you all a very suc- cessful and long life, full of joy and happiness. With all my appreciation for all you did for me, Afsaneh Shariat 4,5 Kg. Rh ,. Under the leadership of Steve Cinter, Jane Christlieb, Wendy Finkenbinder, Dottie Helman, and Mr. Uuerr, the class advisor, the class of 763 moved hesitantly into a memorable era at Big Spring High School. The whole year had the 'gfirst yearn excitement of high school, but there were special times like the night of our dance. Named L'Where the Sun Has Never Shonef' it was a huge success. We can still remember the enchantment of the gymg decorated in navy and white and filled with the music of the 4'New 1vels.77 Another special time was our first class trip. Now we chuckle when we think about the tenth grade thrill of visiting the State Capitol and spending that after- noon at Hershey Amusement Park. Yes, 1965-66 was a very good year. Fall, 1966. Steve Ginter, Henry Brant, Wendy Fink- enbinder, and Jenny Goodhart led us enthusiastically into our junior year. Proudly wearing our new class rings and having a year of experience behind us, we struggled through the toughest year thus far. This was a year of growing up and taking part-and take part we did. Who can forget taking part in Anne of Green Gables, a play directed by Mr. Harry Robinson, our advisor! Then there was the spring musical, Annie Get Your Gun, Big'Spring,s first all-school production. Spring was also the time of our class trip to Philadel- phia, it was by far the most exciting-and the loudest one yet. Our patriotic hearts fluttered as we viewed such landmarks as Valley Forge, lndependence Hall, and Franklin Institute. But all of this was stored away for later reminiscing as we wished our way to the night of the Junior Prom. It was the time of enchant- ment and romance that we had waited for all year. Wendy Finkenbinder reigned as queen over Some Enchanted Eveningv and as the crowd gazed on, she and her court-Avis Allen, Jane Christlieb, Gail Helm, Dottie Helman, Barbara Hetrick, Susan Miller, Mary Nelson, and Becky Peduzzi were presented, fulfilling the perfection of this evening. These are our memories of our junior year. Fall, 1967. It seemed unbelievable that we were now Remember the seniors. Henry Brant. Denny McCullough. Karen Will, and Gail Helm were chosen to guide us through our last and most important year. A very special addi- tion to our class was Afsaneh Shariat. our foreign exchange student from Iran. Her bubbling personality and pretty face fitted right into the scheme of things at B. S. H. S. ln October our Homecoming Queen, Gail Helm, and her court-,lane Christlieb. Barbara Hetrick, Pat Mc- Carter, Linda Mentzer, Mary Nelson, Becky Peduzzi, and Afsaneh Shariat were presented to the student body at a special Homecoming assembly and to the public at the dance and football game. The disappointment at the loss of the Homecoming game was lessened by the appearance of these girls. Mr. Robinson once again turned out a fine junior- senior class play, Our Hearts Were Young and Cay. It was acclaimed a huge success when presented to the public. Speaking of successes leads us to the senior class trips. Our first, in November, was to New York City. A tour of the city and a matinee at Radio City lVlusic Hall topped off the over-all excitement of being in our nationis largest city. ln February, we took our second :lass trip. This time we headed south to our nation's capital. Though it rained most of the day, most of us got to see the major attractions. Home again, we turned our attention to the produc- ,ion of the popular musical Carousel. We sang and lanced our way through two successful standing-room- mly presentations. But that was yesterday-and now we have tomorrow. 'Ks the future that We've spent twelve long years plan- ling quickly becomes the present, we look with deepest gratitude toward our teachers and advisors. Some of hese people, Mr. Woods, Mr. Minick, Mr. Porter, Mr. nfield, Mrs. Corbin, and Mr. Kressler, have been in- 'olved in a large part of our senior year. They have vorked ceaselessly to help make our last year our best ear. It is with their help that we embark upon a rightening, yet hopeful tomorrow. . ' . . . . , 'Z XV Ma 1 f 1 , .
