BIG SPRING Point of Departure-Sophomores on the newly constructed ship, Big Spring. Longitude-770-10, W Latitude-400-12, W Daze-September 14, 1955 Course-It represents three years of both rough and smooth sailing. Point of Destination-Receiving our diplomas. We proceeded full speed ahead in somewhat of a fog, becoming acquainted with the ship and the other voyagers. A meeting was held where we elected our officers. They were Michael Tarner, Captain, Karl Gable, Co-Captain, Winifred Hummel, Secretary, Lester Funk, Treasurer, and Barbara Bice, Historian. A big event-Sophomore Hop was held in the gymnasium of our new ship on January 7. Not only was it winter on deck, but the theme of the dance was Winter Wonderland. Frank Taylor and his orchestra provided the music. We docked in June for a trip to Hershey. In the morning we visited the chocolate plant and other places of educational interest, and then spent an enjoyable afternoon in the park and at the swimming pool. Our voyage for the first year came to an end. September 4, 1956-We set sail to spend a second year on the U.S.S. Big Spring. One hundred ten voyagers came aboard for the second year. Our officers were Michael Tarner, Captaing Karl Gable, Co-Captain, Winifred Hummel, Secretary, Elizabeth Eberlig, Treasurer, and Barbara Rice, Historian. Since it was the second year on board, We had the opportunity to buy our class rings. It was amateur night on board ship, April 5, 1957. '4The Eyes of Tlaloc was presented by some of the Voyaging members. Much excitement on board-We docked at the Isle of Capri for the most important and elaborate event of the year-The Junior Prom, which was held on April 13. Al Bethel and his orchestra supplied the music for this momen- tous affair. It was our first experience dancing under the stars. All the voyagers enjoyed their annual trip to Gettysburg. It was fun to set foot on dry land for a time. After boarding ship again, the entire crew and voyagers presented their version of South Pacific. Douglas Goodhart, Robert Moffitt, Donna Rynard, and Ronald Burkholder sang solos. We again docked where the juniors entertained the seniors with their tra- ditional annual picnic at the fascinating resort of Lake Fuller on May 24. We spent three months leave on shore Where we rested before resuming our Voyage in the fall. September 4, 1957-After the visit everyone boarded the ship to take an- other yearis sail. Again we elected officers: Donald Bricker, Captain, Karl Gable, Co-Cap- tain, Kay Woodburn, Secretary, Elizabeth Eberly, Treasurerg and Barbara Rice, Historian. The first annual Homecoming was held on November 9. A queen was elected by the entire crew to reign over this event. Miss Barbara Ann Rice was chosen for the honor. Her attendants were Carolyn Myers, Nancy Shettel, Brenda Baughman, and Carol Roth. The senior voyagers presented a comedy Arsenic and Old Lacei' on No- vember 2l and 22. The junior crew entertained us at Lake Fuller. Then the U.S.S. Big Spring docked on May l for our trip to Washington, D.C. We visited the Capitol, Smithsonian Institute, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Washington Monument and other places of interest. Boarding the ship, we explained to the other crew members our wonderful trip to Wash- ington. After three years of both rough and smooth sailing, we finally received our diplomas. Each one walks down the gang plank with memories and experi- ences never to be forgotten, but eager to explore his World of Tomorrow. But all was Well when the hall patrols came to their resue. An intramural sports program involved many of these recruits. They used excess energy and developed physical strength through football, wrestling, and bas- ketball. They are now planning their social event of the year, the seventh grade party. These younger crew members will soon become first class sailors through the instruction of the officers and with the patience of the rest of the crew.
