The class of '49's first existance was to take place in September, in the year 1945. After the newness of the class disappeared and fellowship became apparent, class officers were elected. The class was divided into two sections with miss Le- one Mcnteith and Mrs. Lee Finkenbinder chosen advisers. This first year Kenneth Harvey was elected to the presidency, with Dora Hamil- ton, vice-presidentg Marion Meals, secretaryg william Fickes,treas- urerg under whose efficient leadership, with cooperation, of class members, the year continued in full swing. Two skating parties were the high lights of the year, and were enjoyed by everyone.nnd Thus Endeth the Events of the First Year. II '49 returned to school - a added here and there but in all eager to re-unite old This time we were together Woods. Business' was under way and class officers were again elected. These were Kenneth Har- vey, presidentg Dorothy Webber, vice-presidentg Mary McGowan, Sec- retaryg william Fickes, treasurer. Early in September of 1946 the class of member missing here and there, a member spite of changes, spiritually the same, friendships and start school life anew. as one body, under the leadership of Mr. The main events of the year were a skating party and a picnic. The latter was one of the most successful and unforgettable get-tcgeth- ers we had ever witnessed. A grand outing was held along the conc- dcguinet Creek at Koser's cottage. Looking forward with mixed emotions to our Junior year we too look- ed backward with no regrets and a feeling of happiness for the year just ended. III Our Class of '49 again returned as one body- the Juniors. Officers were immediately elected for business soon came into existance.hen- neth Harvey was again named president, Mary McGowan,vice-president, Dora Hamilton, secretary, er added as historian. Members of the class were significant factor by the first Junior Prom ever to of the day. however after william Fickes, treasurer and Eldon Jump- called together for a very special and class adviser, Mrs. Finkenbinder. The very be held in Newville became the main event several months of hectic planning and al- so furious doing, everything was in readiness, and the happy night arrived. Under the guidance of Mrs. Finkenbinder, with the help of other faculty and class members, the entire school and our guests n0ur Prom' was made a success. 1111.5 Qfa55C Sfigfovpa The next important event of the year was the Junior-Senior banquet sponsored by the Juniors. After much planning and hurly-burly, came the day. Its success was due to the participating of class members in the entertainment for the night. with a warm feeling between the two classes, our store of pleasant memories increased as our third year drew to a close. IV Having gone through the early stages of nigh School, the class re- turned more mature and with a definite purpose of life in view. We after all were now Seniors. Social obligations and responsibilities were fast becoming realities and not topics for P.D. class. This our final year was filled with sadness and loss. Lighter moments of the year featured the Junior Prom which was well attended by all. Being the second of its kind and since we were its creators, we watched its progress with parental interest. Feeling the benevolence of our mood, we supported the Soph Hop in early April. This HShowerH dance climaxed the year's outside activ- ties, and possibly - just possibly - all the showers were not those of the decorations. After all, if you are a bit of a romanticist it was our last inter-school function. Sut- On to washington! Mr. Deeds went there, HHarryW made it, and with a minimum of fuss and our chartered bus - so did wel Upon returning from our trip, we were met face to face with our fi- nal exams. Like I've said before, not all events in our Senior year were happy ones, but the last milestone in our journey had now been reached and passed. We were Graduating! Tritt, had a heavier schedule than last year, and was said to be one of the heaviest in the history of New- ville High. Our practice sessions started in early November. Our squad numbered about twenty-five candidates. We started our season on December 15th and played a full schedule of games C171 through to March 4th--winning 6 and losing ll. The Varsity was led by four lettermenz Finkey, Swartz, Reid, and the team captain, Barrick. Other strong links in the team chain were: I. Nelson, Craig Funston, B. Shearer, and Bob Mowery - all newcomers to the Varsity squad, but stellar men from last year!s Junior Varsity. The Junior Varsity, led by G. Mowery, Watson, Gross, Morrison, and Jones, won 8 and lost 6 of their 14 games. HIGH SCORERS VARSITY JUNIOR VARSITY W. Reid ------- 172 J. Watson ------ --65 W. Barrick ---- 120 G. Our first game, under the pitching of Jay Ginter and the slugging of Irvin Nel- son, saw Boiling Springs going down to the count of 4 to 2. Shippensburg won the next hard fought contest in a late in- ning rally. Boiling Springs was again defeated for the sum of 5 to 4 on a home run by Nelson - Ginter again doing the mound work. Shippensburg met a similar fate, going down be fore the Bulldogs stick-work 5 to 4 in the fourth game ofthe season. Besides furn- ishing tuneful music, both vocal and instrumental, for a number of occasions, the members found that belonging to its various organizations was helpful and inspirational. The fifty member Glee Club figured in more events than the band or orchestra as far as raising money was concerned. The cho- rus worked hard to present a very lovely Christmas candlelight service, December 17. Selected members of the chorus attended a Cumberland County Choral Festival in Shippensburg on March 4. A good portion of the Glee Club attended the concert. Lastly the chorus furnished special music for commencement. The thirty piece band played on Armistice Day and Memorial bay and several times for assemblies. It also furnished the mus- ic for the April meeting of the Band Parents Association. The twenty-five piece orchestra played for the candlelight service, for several assemblies, furnished the music for com- mencement, and played between the acts of the annual school play and the grade school operetta, NHansel and Greteln. The Band Parents Association, organized two years ago, be- sides sponsoring only the instrumental groups, also included the Glee Club in its expense account. The association furnished and paid for the bus that took the chorus to the All-County Choral Festival on March 4. Several additional instruments were bought. f s n: U i , V s - sg -I ,FV 1 ,, mi ,gaamal N . . '-, Wfffiffr. W f : ii., ff., 5555512 5 'J ' ,.-.:5:f,-if ' 1 sin: - 51:i s.,'? - . H9 . The general purpose of our group is a look to the future and our place in the world of good homes and homemakers. Several interesting trips were made by the club to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show at Harrisburg and to the fash- ion show in York. One of the outstanding social events of these past months was the Christmas party that featured a scavenger's hunt and a dance. Dues are paid by the club members and other projects have been conducted. The Newville Chapter of the Future Farmers of America start- ed in the year of 1930. The general purpose of our group is to learn new methods of farming and to do practical work on various types of projects in connection with our agricultural interests. Several successful drives were made and completed to meet the fi- nancial obligations of the group. Also several social functions were held. Notable among these was the picnic at Doubling Gap last spring, and the trip to the Pennsylvania State Farm Show at Harrisburg in January of this year. Each year a calf is given by the SearSmRoehuck Foundation to the unit. There are twenty-seven active m bers in the group this year. ADVERTISING 15 I1 F ALWAYS BETTER - THAN NEED BE ' E W' Tj?
