J. a UEUIIIHTIUH I 'x l 'Ng FOREWORD - The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-eight presents HThe Big Springn - a book of history - to record and keep ever present the memories of the many happy school days spent here at Newville High School. The name,HThe Big Springn, was selected as a permanent title by members of the graduating class. We felt the name was typical of our locality. The large spring pours forth its waters from some hidden source near our town, and then moves on to the sea. So it is with usg receiving our start in school we spring into the world as one of the tributaries in the Stream of Life. AS we look into these pages during the future years may they bring to us many reminiscences of classmates and teachers, d ever awakening keep more true the love of our Alma Mater. 939 ik gk gg CHARLES E. HASSLER DEDICATION - - - We, the Class of 1948, feel it a privi- lege to dedicate this, THE BIG SPRING, our yearbook, to Mr. Hassler, our friend and counselor for many years. first as a teacher and then as a super- intendent he has aided us in our effort to move through our adolescence and pre pare for our place in society. -,9e- 1 1 rv glhi 1 K Y .L T ry I , f 4 'J I 1 5- 1 L . . 7 , ., Ui , 5 M a : ..y, ,W . With an ini- tial enrollment of fifty-nine members, the class was divided into two sec- tions with Miss Saby and Miss herb, as supervisors. After getting acquainted with one another, we elected officers, as follows: president, June Kyle, secretary, Joan Swartz, and treasurer, Fran- ces Woltz. before nur first year came to a close, some of our number were lost to us, including ndna may Salisbury, nick Gohick, James Miller, Robert Spahr, Gayle Keck, Robert Heller, and Jane Whee1er.Jean Stouffer also trans- ferred to the middletown school. however our enrollment was increased by the addition of Gladys Hill and Leo Weiwall. SOPHOMORE CLASS As the egg must give way to the caterpillar in the mstamorphosis of the butterfly, so were we to become more mature with the second year ,of our learning. The class now numbered fifty-one members, its two sections in supervision of Mrs. Rearick and mr. Krall. Glass officers chosen werespresident, mary Drexlergsecretary,Mina Hurley, treasurer, Bertha Shellehamer. Our chief social event was a successful roller skating party in which everybody co-operated heartily. I The class was again diminished, when we lost the following members charlotte Bennett, Mina Hurley, M rtle Byers, and Lee Hoover.Leo Weivall, a classmate, of whom we are very proud, left during the year to serve in the armed forces. william Burkholder transferred to the oarlisle High school. Rosalind Johnson, Sara Cover and Phyllis Hostetter increased our number at the beginning of the term, while Janet stahl joined us later. JUNIOR CLASS , As the cocoon of the butterfly gives you a glimpse of the beauty which is to come forth, so did our Junior year give us a bright glance at the future. The class had diminished in number to forty-two, and we became a single unit with Mr. Krall as supervisor. Edgar Salisbury now became class president, with Janet Stahl as th secretary, and Jay Gzlnter, treasurer. Roxbury was the scene of two roller skating parties this year. They were well attended and everyone had a swell time. A great event of the year was the selection and purchase of class jewelry, and caps, which were pleasing to all. C5fa5543 Scigfovqc SENIOR CLASS The full grown butterfly now emerges, and spreads its wings in all its beauty, which nature has so bountifully bestowed upon it, So with this feeling,we began our senior year, the most golden of all.We were thirty-eight in number, with Levone Lebo failing to her studies and nernard meals enrolling from another school. Miss Plough became our new faculty advisor. , Under the direction of mr. Porter, and miss Plough, this, our first year book, was planned and published. On April 29, we set out for Washington,U.G., on a sightseeing ex- cursion. The three days tour included all points of interest, and was the high spot of the year. The junior class members were our hosts on may 2l,at a banquet in the social rooms of the Lion Lutheran ohurch. The seniors wish here to ex- tend their thanks for this pleasant evening. big Spring rresbyterian church was the scene of the baccalaureate service on the evening of may 25rd. The following week, on may 25, commence- ment exercises were held in the school auditorium and we received our diplo- mas, at appropriate exercises. with the thought, that Hln ourselves our fut- ure liesn, our motto, and our farewell song to the tune of the whiffenpoof , we left our high school, to venture out into the world. Time - 1965 From Mayor Frank Eberly's estate, four of us, Walter Loy, Jay Gin- ter, Edgar Salisbury, and Robert Fry, are planning to leave for California, in Fry's 1927 Ford. Among the spectators in the crowd are Donald Kail, the mayor's but- ler, and Mary Barrick, his secretary. Along the curb in the mayor's new 1965 Buick, is his chauffer, Bernard Meals. Slowly, the 56 year old relic of a Ford, starts down High street, past Raulston's Barber Shop, as Mrs. Raulston, formerly June hyle, is com- ing out of the housepwith her ten year old twins, Donna Lee and Donald. Now as we turn left, up Main street, we are headed toward the new City's Entrance on the Super Highway. As we putt-putt through this resid- ential part of town, Ginter notices a large stone mansion, where Peggy Rook and Patsy Over are bathing in their private swimming pools, as both of them married into the millions. g - F Well, here we are in the outskirts of Chicago, and out of gas. Loy is nominated to go and get some. Upon returning Loy said he met a former old Schoolmate at Kramer's Gas Station, where Mrs. Merle Kramer,Dorothy Oiler, sold him the gas., Today is Sunday and 1,000 miles have been covered. We all decided that we should go to church, and give the old Ford a rest.As we entered the church,, we could hardly believe what we saw on the Church Bulletin Board- REV. CHARLES R. WH ELER - SERMON THIS SUNDAY - WSINNERS IN DISTRESSW ----- This Sunday there were two babies to be baptized, Glenn Griffie, Jr., son of the former Ruth Layg and William Chestnut, Jr., son of Bertha Shellehamer. We noticed several familiar faces in the congregation, so after church we stay- ed a few minutes to chat with Doris Jones, Doris Baer, Miriam Ocker, and Dor- is Grever, The rest of the day was spent at the Rev. Mr. Wheeler's residence where we were served a large dinner, at our request, of course. Time's awastin', so we must move on. Oh, my, we have to stop until a band goes by. Say,'look at those drum majorettes, followed by Louise Drex- ler, and Betty Henry, who can still swing their batons. There went also Fran- ces Woltz and Phyllis Hostetter, marching with the others who were campaig- ning for men to be re-instated as voters. l Qfagg tlgvozlogecgo My, that sure was some town, now wasn't it ? Just as we are about to cross a bridge, an old '28 Chevvy driven by Paul Showaker, with a passenger, Frank Menges, smashes intoolthe side of our Ford. So we get towed to a garage by John Christliev, and his wife, Kathryn Seitz, our former schoolmate. Well, that little episode only took up two days time, and at a cost to us of 34238. What the heck! Let's stop here1 , yelled Loy. We all thought he was Joking.Do you know why? Well, I'll tell you, it's very near a college, but it could that he wants to see an old schoolmate. Anyway, we found her, Barbara Griffie, dean of a girls' college, in which J anet-Stahl was housemother at the dorm. Joanne Swartz and Joyce Stitt, teaching phys-ed. In the cafeteria were Rosalindfokm son, head cook, and coach of basketball. Betty Baker, Helen Varner and Alma Harvey were also on the staff. And of all people to be at a girls' college is that redhead, Tom McCullough, the janitor. He used to be so bashfull Fry said, WIt's about time we get Loy out of here or we will never get started. A Fourpdays later we finally wound up in Los Angeles, California.Fry remarked as we parked along the Se.nFrancisco Bay,that The old Ford is still good for another 5000 miles. We were about 525 feet away from the faithful car, when a trailer broke loose from its tractor, and lmocked our ,Ford down the deep drop into the bay. With all 'our belongings gone, we started out anew and who should we run into but Mrs. John Brandt,lLouise Bowermasterl , and Isa- bel Hemminger, accompanied by Betty Burkholder. After loafing two days on an empty stomach, we decided that California was not the place for us, and so we headedback to Pennsylvania on at freight train, broken hearted and broke. We were wiser but sadder men from our experience. o W ,, . ,. .. .Y.V . ,,,,,.,-v-gun--in -1,- Bobby hry's seriousness to Wayne Reed. ' Peggy hook's dark, naturally curly hair to Violet Graham. Directors The farce comedy of the woes of Grandpa, whose daughter guards his failing health too carefully, weaves its plot into a number of funny situations. The old gentleman decides to step' out with a a few old cronies, and possibly indulge in a ngood juicy steakn as a welcome change from the soup and cracker diet now given him. Visiting relatives and new neighbors, offer a chance for new romantic angles to be developed., The fact that the town newcomers have triplets in the family, adds extra pressure on the financial situation of a young grandson. A too inquisitive neighbor,romanti-. cally inclined, gives added humor to a generally entertaining play. The story of the operetta was based on'a true Romany saying, to WWa1t till the moon risesn, before taking action on a given course. The setting was the grounds of a fashionable resort hotel in New Hampshire. The usual musical comedy situations developed, titled persons masquerading as commoners, with the inevitable discovery of the true identity. The plot was also replete with a Gypsy king, and wandering tribal maidens. - The suspense was sustained by a kidnapping, and the music, by a title theme song, and romances covered most of the cast, even the Holder folkn. With tuneful chorusnwork, and a pretty setting, and all the principals living happily ever after, the High School op- eretta came to a pleasing conclusion. The twenty-five piece orchestra played for assembly programs dur- the year, furnished music for the High School play in December, and al- so played for commencement activities. The Glee Club, or mixed chorus, was made up of forty-five members and assisted not only with school programs, but in a number of local ci- vic activities also. The chief activity of the school year was the oper- etta, Wwhen The Moon Risesn, music also being furnished for commencement and the Band Parents' Association meeting, in October. Civic activities in which the Glee Club participated included sing- ing for the Christmas carol service, the union meeting in the United Pres byterian Church, and the World Day of Prayer service held in the Zion Lu- theran Church. The group also sang at one meeting of the Civic Club. The thirty-two piece band played for several assembly programs held in the school auditorium, where music was also furnished for the Armis- tice Day program. The High School band welcomed Santa Claus on his visit to Newville, and the annual band concert was given on April 16. The band also did its share in helping with commencement activities. The Band Parents Association, originated two years ago, and with a membership of 115, with dues of one dollar each, is able to aid the loc- al school musicians in many ways. Leon Wagner presided at the monthly As- sociation meetings, which on one occasion was addressed by Mr. Nelson,as guest speaker, telling of his work as music supervisor of the Carlisle High School. Army Band Warrant Officer Natafalusy, of Carlisle, also told of his activities at the Army Post. Projects of the Band Parents' Association include purchase of musi- cal instruments, outfitting the entire twirling group, sponsoring of the school's first Junior Prom and town band concert. Money-making activities included bake sales, an indoor fair, flower sale and card parties. A special award is made each year to the most outstanding pupil in the field of music. . ,Q , MIXED CHORUS Front Row: P.Richardson, M.Drex1er, K.Harvey, -I.Nelson, J. Swartz, D.
