MAYRON SHIEIDS. FCJREWORD Throughthe pages of this book, we, the 1953 El Rodeo staff, invite you to go with us for a day in Big Spring Senior High School. If you have been a student of B.S.H.S., the course of events will seem very familiar to you, and if you did not attend school here, perhaps our activities will remind you of the school you did attend. For some of us fthe members of the band, c ho i r, and athletic departmentj our school day started at eight o'clock. At nine o'clock the regular schedule began, with a scripture reading and the announce- ments being made over the public address system. It was not unusualthat along with our class periods we had an assembly, sponsored by the student coun- cil. Throughout the day local townspeople were seen in our midst. They had come to see our new high school plant, to take part in an assembly, or to request the services of some p a rt i cula r student group. At noon many of uswent to the school cafeteria for lunch, and during the noon hour everyone had time to visit with friends or to attendvarious club meetings. In the aftemoon, classes ran on regular schedrne, but we all felt an underlying excitement about that night's ball game. After school we went downtown for a snake dance and pep-rally. Then at eight o'c1ock all the loyal Steer fans gathered in Steer stadium to support our team. Following the game we attended a dance held in the gym and thus concluded a typical day of study and recreation on thc campus of B.S.H.S. Although there is not space on this page to tell of all that can happ e n in Big Spring High, you will find other phases of ou r school life pictured throughout the following pages. As students of B.S.H.S. we are very proud of the many ways in whic h our school serves us and the surrounding community. In this annual, a memory book of the 1952- 1953 school year, we have tried to portray for you the varied activ- ities, the high ideals, and the true spirit of our school. THE STAFF INTROIJUCING DD. You have fought the good fight, and in a few days the victory will be won. As you have progressed through school, I am sure you have experienced many joys and some disappointments. You may expect the same in adult life. Faith and hard work will change failure to success. I hope that you have leamed in school that there is no mbstitute for work and that one of the greatest pleasures in life is to see a job well done. It is my sincere hope that our visions of peace may soon be a reality and that you will find happiness and success in the job you do. 777 J 1 enior High Schoolm ROY D. WDRLEY, P!uNnIlAL MAYHDN SHIELDI, Allf. Pllnnl Big Sp ring, Texas TO THE GRADUATES OF 1953: The time has come when I must, with reluctance, bid farewell to you as high school students. lt is now my fervent hope that the training gained in your homes and your school will be a constant challenge to you to hold steadfast to the good prin- ciples of our democratic society. Truly this is your commencement. You are enter- ing upon a great and laudable Lmdertaking - that of learning to be a useful, adult citizen of t he world. You will soon be living in a highly specialized and competitive world, one in which you can ill afford to le t a day pass without growing in wisdom and know- ledge, Those of you who have exercised your mental and physical abilities have a good fundamental education upon which to base further learning. Ln addition to encouraging you to extend your capa- bilities, talents, and common sense, I wish to commend to you the practice of the Golden Rule to insure happy, complete, and whole- some living.
