The name is that of Randolph Barnes Marcy, U.S. Army, whose log of an official military mis sion in the Southwest mentions the encountering of a spring, which he found flowing from a deep chasm in the limestone rocks into an immense reservoir of some fifty feet in depth. The notation was made October 3, 1849. Marcy's report to the War Department is a colorful and entrancing account of prairie exploration. He described meet- ing Indian tribes and told of their customs, he reported on flora and fauna ofthe coun- try, set up detailed instructions as to distances, bearings, wood and water con- ditions, and similar information for future travelers. His descriptions were detailed, and readers of his report today wouldbe amused at his reference to the Plains area as the great Sahara of North Americaii' vast and tracklesswtand must continue un- inhabited forever. But for Big Spring people, his major report is that of October 3, 1849, when he came upon the spring that brought about the creation and early development of the c ommunity which now is celebrating a spring's Centennial. Schools have played an important part in the advancement of Big Spring. On youth day, the schools had thousands ofstudents participating in parades. No. 1 - Big Spring municipal band, under the direction of J. W. King, marched in parades each day of the celebration. No. 2-The Gir1s'Phys- ical Education Dept. under A. Smith and A, Phillips. If we could have had our way, we would have kept Ben here with us, but we must realize that there is Someone much more powerful than we are who had a reason for taking him from us. Ben was a junior in Big Spring High School at the time of his death. His main interest was in the band in which he played the clarinet. Because of the good deeds we remember Ben for, it is clearly visible that if we live our lives as we should, we will be able to join him againg not in a school building, but in that place where there is no such thing as death. wfflff Wm M My WW fvffifw ff X WY vgil 14,3 52?
