S. ff d 1 a Penmanship course is to eve op plain muscular movement writing and become rapid legible writers The pupils are encouraged to use better writing in all school work, learning the value of good writing both in school and out. During the semester each pupil strives to get a High School Certificate and is rewarded for effort and merit. I Q 1 -I -.NNQ HISTORY N' xtxl o ' A LIBRARY This course in library work I of the ways to use the library, that is, to teach the pupils how to find what they want without bothering the librarian or any of her assistants This library lesson, taken on the study-hall days of the Physical ucation course, should be taken Ed by all freshmen of every school that has a library. It is certainly a beneficial course. The S are a correlation of Geography, Ethics, Sociology, Occupations, Economics, Civics, and History. The purpose of the Social Rela- tions Courses is to make each pupil in Big Spring High School a socially efficient member of society. HA socially efficient man is he who can earn his own living, who does not interfere with others in earning theirs, and is able to do his part in promoting the progress of his generation.H ?f x ,,ff MATHEMATICS he study of mathematics, which ,lf,f includes general math, algebra, plane d solid geometry, and trigonometr is intended to give practical dis iplinary values in enabling one o think clearly and logically cultural values in causing one appreciate more fully beauty, form, truth and precision In addition to acknowledg ing these accepted values of mathematics, even one who does A not go into the study of the SCIENCE General science includes study the different divisions of our en vironment, such as light, air and electricity The purpose of the study of B1 ology is, to become acquainted with living things, to know their characteristics and activities and to develop a scientific attitude In studying sciences a per spective of the nature and scope of science is gained, thereby revealing possible avocational and vocational fields and ex ploring the pupil's interests, abilities, and aptitudes to prepare for further study in special sciences such as Chemistry and Physics. subject should recognize and respect mathematics as a tool necessary for progress in any of the sciences, should de velop number judgment by learning to approximate answers concerning the home budget, insurance, taxes, vestments , salaries , etc Q? TYPEIRITING DEPARTING Typewriting is an elective subject for Juniors and Seniors It has been a popular course among upper-classmen. Approx- imately 125 students receive credit in this course each year A speed of 30 words per min- ute must be attained for credit Speed ranges between 30 and 70 words per minute during the first year. The course covers technique of skill attainment, letter writ ing, manuscript writing, and other practical applications of Type writing .o X DIVERSIFIED OCCUPATIONS The D 0 students are the wo ers of the school Attending school in the morning and work ing the remainder of the day Various trades such as tailoring, clerking, dental work laboratory work and secretarial work are some of the main departments the students choose While they are in Diversified Occupations class they study trade Journals and the the theory rk I N KAI, 7' ' 1 1 1 theory of the job then go to work O N HOME EC COOKING the homemaking division, in which both boys and girls partici pate, one is taught food prepara tion, nutrition, feeding the sick, and making the home life happy, which includes many entertainments This department has steadily progressed and taken a higher place in school elective subjects 56 HOME EC: SEWING In the clothing section you study clothing selection, proper dress, furnishing the home, first aid, budgeting, and the child, its teachings and dress. Journalism Class Ink, noise, paper, stencils and machines all have important parts in the journalistic de partment of the school Its main function, of course, is publishing for the High School students, the school paper HThe Corral Each member of the class holds a de finite Job art work writing, typing, correcting, or operating the mimeograph machine During the year the class is taught the principals of news writing, the history of Journalism and how to read and Judge a newspaper Accuracy means a lot on any publication so the class members strive always to be able to see and tell both sides of any questions and tell them correctly XL? f but f XX f tx. X 1 BOYS PHYS ED In the boys P E classes they play such games as football bas ketball, volley ball, baseball and tumbling Their uniforms are white and tennis shoes of white The towel system is used which furnishes a clean towel to every boy, who has payed a fee, every time he takes a shower The coeducational first aid course, which is being tried out for the first time this year, will the start the last six weeks of school year It will be given in the gym GIRLS PHYS. ED. The aim of P. E. is to help develop girls physically, men- tally, socially and morally. This offers opportunities for of these phases. It of- fers a chance to develop leader- ship and Ufellowshipn which will be a big carry over in our lives school. the sports program we have basketball, volley ball, captain ball, tumbling and indoor sports. A coeducational first aid course is being tried out, this year, in the last six weeks of Certificates will be school. awarded those who work for each them.
