I will have to adjust to the wants and needs of the community and school board. An opportunity because Big Sandy has a statewide reputation cf having an excellent education standards and quality that past administration and present staff members have instilled. I like the challenge to continue the present quality and will work hard on area that need improving. The students and parents sincerely have a school that they should be proud of and I appreciate your support. May my time at Big Sandy be one of continuing excel- lence to the quality of education for your children. William O. Colter Superintendent PRINCIPAL AND SECRETARY The theme of this year’s annual is food. As an educator, I like to think of books and learning as food for the mind. Just as food provides nourishment for our bodies and helps them develop so, too, the educational and extracurricular experiences in which we partake help develop our minds and our spirits. The 1986-87 school year has produced new changes and new experiences that will help us grow in intellect and in spirit. The capturing of the State Class C Girls Basketball championship, a fitting honor for this year’s team, has greatly helped to illustrate the positive spirit of which I speak. An examination of the performance of our students in academic pursuits (be it on test scores or educational accomplishments) shos the educational and intellectual growth that is continually taking place with many of our students. Many of us associate food with the good times that we share with friends and relatives at various gatherings. In years to come, this annual will hopefully serve as the food for thought to reminds us of the many experiences and good times shared this year. I would like to congratulate the annual staff for their efforts in producing this annual. I would also like to express a special thank you to everyone who actively participated in the many academic and extracurricular activities that took place this year. Thank you for helping provide food for our minds and spirits. James Barsotti TEACHERS Roy Lackner- Typing I, Bookkeeping. Personal, and Girls’ Basketball Coach. Girls Track Coach. Q GRADE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE John O'Malley Elementary Principal PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE To the graduates of ’87 and all the students in the Miley and Big Sandy Hi; this marks an era in my lifetime. I, too, graduates of ’87, will be leaving the Big Sandy school system at the end of the present year. I think it appropriate at this time, due to pride in my Irish ancestry, to quote an Irish Blessing: May the road rise to meet you May the wind be always at your back May the sun shine warm upon your face The rains fall soft upon your fields And, until we meet again May God hold you in the palm of his hand. The following was taken from a letter to Mr. Green from a former pupil, Blanche Robertson. Her words express the thoughts of all students, facul- ty, and community members. It is hard to express the appreciation I feel toward you concerning the two years I was in your English classes and the quarter I spent at Big Sandy high school under your supervision as a practicing Eng- lish teacher. Mr. John O’Malley has been a principal and teacher to many of us. He has been very helpful in coordinating sales and picture- taking efforts for the annual staff, not to mention his many other services to the community. On behalf of the students, faculty, and community, we extend our appreciation. By 1962, Mr. O’Malley had a B.A. in secondary education, political science, economics, and sociology, and a Master’s degree in education administration. In 1966 he and his family moved to Big Sandy. Mr. O’Malley has been our grade school principal for the past twenty one years. While here he has held all the offices in V.F.W., served as ambulance driver, worked with boy scouts, taught hunter safety and has been an impor- tant and productive member of our community. John O’Malley has seen 700 students safely through the steps of their elementary school experience here at Big Sandy and of our schools he says: “Based on my observations of the past twenty one years and the fact that all three of my children have passed through here, it is one of the finest school systems in the State of Montana. Having such a dedicated, devoted teaching staff and coopera- tion from the parents make it so.” Mr. O’Malley is retiring with a total of 38 years experience in the education field. As a teacher, you had high expectations for your students. In these expectations, students were challenged to reach their potential. Many times, most were surprised that they could master such work. You did not only, however, have these ex- pectations for student’s performance in your classroom, but in all areas of their education. I think I speak for many, when I say, that your students performed these tasks because we did not want you to be disappointed in us. Did you realize what an honor it was to reach the junior year knowing that we were finally having Mr. Green as a teacher. Your reputation as a teacher who had high standards and' a keen sense of humor was well known. You gained your student’s respect because you set the example. It was so obvious to all, that you had a complete understanding of your subject. You treated your students as young adults capa- ble of more than mediocrity. It is with great sadness that I hear of your retire- ment. I wish you the very best, because you gave us the very best.
