The grief in his heart, the pain in his mind, were hidden away for no one to find. The signs, the symptoms were there peeking through. But what they meant nobody knew. Isn't it sad what we can't understand. He needed for us to hold his hand. He needed for us to always be there, to love and support him, and show that we care. It's all over and now we know how to save someone from sinking so low. But isn't it sad That the pain had to end by the loss of a loved one- the loss of a friend? by a Big Sandy High School graduate During his tenure as District Superinten- dent of Big Sandy Public Schools, Mr. Ro- mine has embraced the objectives of com- mitting district financial resources into plant improvement, building construction, paving the parking lot, and establishing a sports complex; of hiring trained faculty with the central focus being the advance- ment of educational opportunities for area students; of encouraging both faculty and students to engage themselves in making Big Sandy Public Schools a superior insti- tution; of involving community leaders in developing programs to meet the needs of students in a rapidly changing society; and of providing the best teaching materials and equipment available to prepare Big Sandy's students to meet today's chal- lenges. That he has succeeded in reaching these objectives can be seen in the achieve- ments and success of Big Sandy's gradu- ates. We thank Mr. Romine for his years of dedi- cation to Big Sandy's school system and wish him and Mrs. Romine success and happiness in the years ahead. WARRIORS OF THE WASTELAND FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL AND SECRETARY The choice of movies as the theme for this year's annual is an excellent one. Just as the movies serve as a recorded history of our society, so, too, does this Pio- neer annual serve as a record of this past year. As other classes have done over the past years, the Class of 1986 will take leave of us and go on to seek new goals and new challenges. This Pioneer annual will therefore help serve as a record of their accom- plishments during their final year here. This year's annual staff is to be congratulated on its effort in organizing and producing this year's record of our school activities. Just as we can watch old mov- ies on the late show to see how society was, we will be able to browse through our 1986 Pioneer in the years to come in order to reminisce the happenings of this year. I am retiring this June 30th after work- ing in public education for the past thirty years with the last nineteen as District Superintendent for the Big Sandy Public Schools. First, I want to take this opportunity to thank all of the graduating classes '68 through '86 for their support, contribu- tions and general concern in retaining the credibil- ity of the Big Sandy Public Schools throughout my tenure here. Second, to all the students who will continue their education here in Big Sandy, despite recent adversities, keep up the hard work and through commitment and loyalty the Big Sandy Public Schools will retain and hopefully improve upon their fine tradition among schools in Mon- tana. INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR WINNER While some youths are trying to figure out what to do next over the weekend, or finding their name in print for less positive reasons, John Cavitt might be found in a science lab checking out the progress of his latest bacteria experiment. A dedication to science that goes back as far as the seventh grade, brought John a First Grand Award in Microbiology in the 37th International Science and Engineering Fair in Fort Worth, Texas in a field of 656 international competitors. The achievements of this Big Sandy junior placed him in the top 4% of the competitors and in the top 27 students who received special awards. John has won best boy science project for the Montana Science Fair two years running for 1985 and 1986. According to Mrs. Genereux John won the American Society of Microbiology Award for three consecutive years, which she feels in unbelievable. He has racked up the U.S. Navy Distinguished Achievement Award, a leather stachel which he received two different years and various other Armed Forces Awards, and a long list of minor awards. John was in competition with young adults from 13 nations in Fort Worth. The projects were judged by over 800 judges from all kinds of national com- panies and every branch of the armed forces. What really won John the award, be- sides what he knew were the interviews with 13 judges for three and a half hours the first session and then the hour and a half second session, said Mrs. Genereux. John also had to present himself well during the interviews, know how to communicate the knowledge he had ac- quired, be good at typing, computer, writing, demonstrating, display tech- niques, all considered by the judges. He came home with $250 for the Microbi- ology Award for himself, and $250 for Big Sandy High School and a plaque for the school.
