Thompson, Advisor Has Recorded For You The Events Of 1983 Table Of Contents Grade School Students, Teachers, and Misc High School Junior High Faculty, Administration, and Staff Clubs and Organizations Music Sports Carnival, Prom, and Academics Seniors Editor’s Message This years annual staff has given a lot of their time and effort to “record” the events of the 1982-83 school year for your viewing. There are numerous events that occurred during the past school year that may be forgotten if they were not recorded in this book. We hope that there are few mistakes and that each event was recorded in such a manner that everyone is satisfied. It takes a great deal of time and hard work to prepare a nice annual, and we hope that this year s annual is as nice as possible. 1 would like to thank a few people for putting in extra time in helping me. These people were there to help finish other people’s pages, do extra pages, take pictures, and even sell ads when they didn’t have to. So thanks for all the help and support, Kari, SueEllen, Camille, and Dorie-you’re great to work with! The massacre raised many questions about the ability to trust Israel, who was expected to have encouraged the massacre General Elections held in November of 1982 indicated a possible landslide victory for Democrats in 1984 The Environmental Protection Agency came under the sword as President Reagan began replacing top officials in the department who were accused of a number of wrongdoings For the second year in a row, mud slides plagued the California coastline, causing many to leave their homes and belongings Queen Elizabeth of England traveled by ship to the city of San Francisco in March of 1983. This was the Queen’s first visit to the United States since the early 1970’s because of severe flooding, many residents of Mississippi were forced to evacuate their homes due to severe ditoxin poisoning in the water system the Washington Redskins won the 1982 Super Bowl over Dallas. It was the Redskins first time in the play offs and they succeeded in gaining the title Former auto giant, John Delorean, came down with a crash as he became entangled in a cocaine deal that cost him his Irish Auto Company as well as a number of land holdings Current Events the unexpected death of Princess Grace brought the world shattering down around the residents of Monoco. The Princess had been a successful actress in the United States who gave up her career to live a “fairy tale” life as wife to Prince Raineer of Monoco Southern State residents fought hard to protect themselves and their homes from total destruction as floods eroded the land and destroyed homes Ghandi and E.T. swept the 1983 Oscars with the former receiving eight Academy Awards and the latter winning four unemployed percentages rose to the hiqhest mark since 1929. Over 12.5 million people were without jobs in December of 1982 another attempt was made to breed Panda Bears in captivation. Although this was successfully achieved in 1981, it has not yet been done in the United States President Reagan of the U.S. met with the President of the Philippines. This was the Philippian Presidents first visit to our country and marked an end to once precarious relations Barney Clark, a discrete dentist, became famous as he was the first receipient of an artificial heart. Clark lived with the heart for a number of weeks but unfortunately died the death of Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev left a number of questions, if not riddles, for the world to answer. The entrance of Yari Andropov into Brezhnev’s position increased American awareness of the threat of the Soviet Union to its security Texas became the first state to use lethal injections as a method of capital punishment. To date at least two men have died by this fate. It is expected that more states will begin to incorporate this “more humane and painless” way of punishment Class Of 1983 Class Flower ....................White Rose Class Colors . . . Colon Christ of ferson, and Dirk Beyer, join together to discuss the situation Mr. O’Malley’s Message “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” As principal and educator in this school system, I would like to extend my congratulations to the 1983 graduating class. Throughout the past 12 years our school system has been working to pre- pare you for the future. The future is in your hands, so strive to achieve and make the best of each day. When I examine the members of this class, I see a group that has shown a great deal of leadership and responsibility. Each member of this class has shown his or her special talents through- out the past four years. Whether they participated in Sports, Speech, Science Club, FFA, FHA, or Music, they strived to achieve all that they could. Throughout their years of school in Big Sandy, the members of the class of ’83 have built a strong foundation to build their futures upon. Again I extend my congratulations to the graduating students of 1983. Autographs Autographs Autographs Vttgh Schoo 4nd FacuW Principal’s Message “Please Mr. B Please” Once again we are approaching the conclusion of another school year. Each year when a class graduates from high school, another embarks on its four-year journey Obviously this process has been going on for years and years in schools every- where. What then serves to remind others of those who have moved on? We are probably all familiar with the example of a man’s presence on earth being compared to that of a man’s placing his hand in a bucket of water. When the man removes his hand, the bucket of water has not really changed — signi- fying that none of us is really that essential and that the world will continue to exist without us. If that is the case, then perhaps we should strive harder to leave behind us something that will be remembered, something that will serve as a record of our existence. In your high school years here in Big Sandy, you students can leave behind a positive record of your existence. This record does not necessarily mean accomplishments such as district, divi- sional, and state championships, or the various honors that so many of you are able to achieve. This record can also be the memories that your fellow students and former teachers will call to mind in thinking of their experiences with you. You see, how you deal with other people is a record that will follow you throughout life This annual serves as a record of some of those memories that you will wish to recall years from now. I congratulate this year’s annual staff for their efforts in producing this memory for you. James Barsatti Hey Kids “Leave Us Roy Lackner teaches commercial subjects, such as Typing. These comments run the gamut of why learn that two and two are four to writing a sophisticated research paper. From practicing on an instrument outside of class, to lifting weights in preparation for some athletic endeavor. From regular school attendance to ac cepting responsibility for their own actions. Research and history has shown that these exper- iences, both positive and negative, are invaluable in the preparation for life and one of the responsi- bilities of educators is to instill in students this philosophy. We in the Big Sandy Public Schools who are directly responsible for the education of the youth of the community have q made a real concerted effort to provide the experiences which will allow each individual student to develop fully according to q his her potential and ability and for the most part, students have accepted the program. Please keep in mind that we have concern 1 for your ultimate welfare and please ‘don’t stop believing’. 0 Congratulations to the Class of 1983. May each of you succeed and have a fulfilling life. ® Boyd Romine C 1 e r k “We’ve Got The Power” School Board Lindy Halverson Merle Olson A r land Gasvoda Marilyn Lund Chairman Alan Larson A Hazel Genereux Shirley Kulbeck When it comes to keeping our schools clean and tidy, our custodians RoseMary Witschen (It), Bernard Witschen (bottom It), and Grade school custodian Jim Stave (below) are dedi cated to the cause.
