She brought her enthusiastic and loving Christian spirit into the hearts of many school chil- dren while cooking at the grade school hot lunch program and mothering the many girls and boys who needed a place to stay during a storm or busy time. She will always be remembered and loved by every- one who knew her. In her memory, we devote this page. May she rest in peace with the Lord. 2 DEDICATION The Annual Staff of 1977 takes great pleasure in dedicating this edition of the PIONEER to Mr. John O’Malley. Mr. O’Malley has been a principal and teacher to many of us. He has been very helpful in coordinating sales and pic- ture-taking efforts for the annual staff, not to mention his many other services to the community. On behalf of the stu- dents, faculty, and community, we extend our appreciation. His father the youngest of twelve children in an Irish family had moved out to the States from the old country, worked around Big Sandy, served in World War I, and was working in an auto plant when to John and Beatrice O’Malley, John O’Malley was bom in Detroit, Michigan, February 2, 1926. After Mr. O’Malley Sr., passed away in February 1930 as a result of a factory machine accident, John moved out here with his brother Steve and their widowed mother who later married Jack Kane, a Bear Paw Mountains rancher. The boys lived with their mother and stepfather on the ranch and attended Dog Creek School. John next attended Big Sandy High School, graduating in 1944. September of that same year found him in the U.S. Infantry headed for active service with the 108th Regimental Combat Team in the southwest Pacific (including the Philippines) and with the Occupational Forces’ 6th Division in South Korea. He holds the Asiatic Service Ribbon, Pacific Service Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, Korean Occupation Ribbon, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Com- bat Infantry Badge. Following military service, which incidentally totaled to two years, two months, two weeks, and two days, Mr. O’Malley worked from December 1946 as a locomotive fireman for the Great Northern Railway on the run between Blackfoot and Glasgow and (shoveling coal) on the north branch line from Saco through Whitewater and Turner. Unfortunately, malaria, which he had brought back from Asia, started in May 1947 to strike him at 11 a.m. every other day and eventually put him onto a military 50°]o disability pension. His next major step was in September 1949 when he enrolled at Northern Montana College. This sojourn in Havre brought John two benefits: a two-year diploma in elementary education (1951) and, perhaps more importantly at that stage, romance! It was in Havre that he met Miss Jessie McKay whose parents had come to America from the Scottish Island of Lewis. Jessie became Mrs. John O'Malley on September 17, 1950. Next came teaching at Ethridge, Montana, for nine years from the fall of 1951. During this time, Mr. O’Malley commenced to further his higher education through summer schools at the University of Montana. He later worked with the Kevin school system for five years. While at Kevin, he was also the local police judge. (John remembers well his first case when the local postmistress, coming before him on a speeding ticket started to cry!) By 1962, Mr. O’Malley had a B.A. in secondary education, political science, economics, and sociology, and a Mas- ter's degree in education administration. These attainments qualified him both to teach and to administrate at all pub- lic school levels. So, it was in 1966, when daughter Peggy was 14, daughter Patty was 13, and son Mike was 8, that the O'Malleys moved here. Mr. O'Malley has been our grade school principal for the past eleven years. While here in Big Sandy, he has held all the offices in V.F.W., including Post Commander; he has served as an ambulance driver, worked with boy scouts, taught hunter safety, belonged to Holy Name Society of which he is a past president, and has been an important and productive member of our community. As a reflection of their parents’ encouragement and example, the children have moved successfully through the various levels of education - Peggy and Patty both hold B. A. degrees from Carroll College, and Mike is an outstanding student at Northwest Community College in Powell, Wyoming. John O'Malley has seen 350 students safely through the steps of their elementary school experience here at Big Sandy, and of our schools he says: Based on my observations of the past eleven years and the fact that all three of my children have passed through here, it is one of the finest school systems in the State of Montana. Having such a dedicated, devoted teaching staff and cooperation from the parents make it so. 3 Learning . . . One Step At A Time 4 Learning takes place every day - step-by-step, a little bit at a time. Our annual, Learning . . . One Step At A Time, is developed with this idea in mind. 5 7 SENIORS SENIORS THE PROMISE OF TOMORROW Graduation is a time of celebration and fond memories ... But most of all, it is a time of new beginnings, a time to look forward to the promise of tomorrow . . . toward a poem that has never been written ... a song that has never been sung ... an empty canvas . . . waiting. The promise of tomorrow is the excitement of faraway fun places . . . and the discovery of secret, quiet places right in our own hearts. It holds the hope of a better life for all people ... a world united ... an era of true brotherhood. The promise of tomorrow is love . . . love of people and love of that certain, special someone . . . love of work, ideas and ideals . . . love of earth, sea and sky. The promise of tomor- row is all that is good, beautiful and true ... a lifetime anxious for its fulfill- ment . . . waiting for you, Graduate! You are the bright, young Promise of Tomorrow. One of the members of that class is my oldest son and the first of my three children to graduate from high school. He has attended the Big Sandy Public Schools for ten years of his life, and I am very thankful and proud that he had the opportunity to gain the greater portion of his elementary and secondary education in a school and community of this caliber. Learning One Step at a Time is the theme of the '77 Annual, and I believe that the children in the Big Sandy community have certainly experienced this, for how else would such an over-all educational foundation have been laid for the Class of '77? Our school is now one of the smallest in the B classification, and yet we have experienced academic and extra-curricular achievements which have made us the envy of many larger peers. We are always concerned when we are about to lose a graduating class because we wonder if classes that follow will provide the kind of positive leadership and example that the current Senior Class has exhibited. Generally our fears are unfounded because our students are learning one step at a time, and when the time arrives, are ready to step in and take over the active reins of leadership in our school system. Congratulations to the Class of '77 on all of your achievements including this publication, and thank you for your contributions that each of you have made in making our school one of the best. 29 PRINCIPAL’S One Step at a Time Education is one step at a time. We usually crawl before we walk, walk before we run, and talk before we read. It is our hope that the curriculum, the extra-curricular activi- ties, and the experiences within and around this curric- ulum have provided important steps in every student’s high school life and a broad prepa- ration for later life. It has been said that life is but a breath of time and so each minute a step in your life. Following this time relationship, the beginning and ending of each year is a threshold in each life. It is convenient to survey our progress on the thresholds of any climb, so it should be appropriate for each of us to reflect on his or her progress at the end of each year. Graduation marks an important threshold in the lives of high school seniors and their families. It is also a very pronounced threshold to the school faculty as they reflect on their successes and failures in helping each student reach what they as teachers see as each student's potential and to what degree that potential was realized in each case. The 1976-1977 school year has produced many successes for Big Sandy High School in all school activities. Divisional Championships were gained in football, wrestling, speech, and drama, and we competed in the state tournament or state play-off levels in football, basketball, wrestling, speech, and drama, winning the State Championship in Speech and Second in Drama and sending one student to national. The Music program won six places in All State Choir, two places in All Northwest Choir, and won outstanding ratings in the district and state music meets. F.F.A. provided a state farmer and a state officer. F.H. A. provided a state officer and a candidate for national office. This outstanding record is the result of leadership and effort on the part of the Junior and Senior classes, together with the dedication of teachers and coaches. I wish to congratulate this Senior class on their very constructive efforts and thank them for the kind of influ- ence which has helped this student body to achieve such success in both curricular and extra-curricular endeav- ors. 1 am sure this annual will be a fine history of your outstanding year of leadership. I congratulate the editors Charlotte Jenkins, Marjory Sheehy, Pamela Welty, and Yvonne Cornett; the photographers Kevin Skaalure and Alan Archibald; and their advisor Mr. Nicolson for a job well done. Each dose takes from yesterday, administers today, and prepares for tomorrow. With the philosophy, live it up now,’ bombarding us from all directions it is all too easy to forget the lesson taught to the grasshopper. Taking life ’’One Step at a Time” can be an effective answer to life's continual problems if it is realized that each step must come from sure footing. Each step must then better its footing in preparation for the steps to follow; for if we stop taking steps, we soon become moss covered. Girls' State, held at Helena, consists of approximately 200 girls, while Boys’ State, held at Dillon, sponsors over 500 boys. Both last about five days. The main purpose of the program is for those in attendance to become better informed about their government. They study government at the local, county, and state level and learn how the state legislature works and about the various offices in the state government. The participants host party campaigns and caucuses and hold elec- tions. Those who were chosen from Big Sandy recommended this as an educational and worthwhile experience. From the pep speeches by Ralph Simp- son and Duane Beirwagen to the crazy skits hosted by the cheerleaders, the pep assemblies helped to generate the spirit during this very success- ful year. Of course, we couldn't leave the band out; their support and entertainment were highlights of all gatherings. 123 GOVERNMENT DAY Government Day provided an opportunity for certain sophomores and juniors to learn about their student government by running in parties. The student body as a whole benefited from the experience of asking questions of the candidates and involving themselves with the process of electing student body officers. Parties that ran were as follows: Ann Drga, Randy Pearson, and Lisa Ray - The Rally Party; Wilfred Knottne- rus, Steve Rose, and Amy Bitz - The W.A.R.
