_I ar fc bl at ■■ ■ • PIONEERS PIONEER 74 Big Sandy, Montana 1 In Memoriam Roger Jappe graduated from Big Sandy High School in 1965, where he was active in football, basketball, and track. He spent two years in the United States Army and attended college at the University of Montana and Northern Montana College, from which he graduated with a degree in Science. Roger died on December 30, 1973, in a one-vehicle accident near Fort Benton. Roger will always be remembered by those who knew him as a dynamic, charming person, full of life and fun. His charismatic personality won for him many friends of all ages who will always remember him for his kindness, thoughtfulness, fun-loving spirit, and zest for life. It is to this memory that we dedicate this page. MATH SCIENCE ___ 2 Dedication We, the Annual S i a f f of 1974, wish to dedicate this book to Mr, Robert Schwartz. Mr. Schwartz came to Big Sandy after teaching in Havre for a year and continued teaching here until his retirement in 1973. During his 29 years of teaching at Big Sandy he has proven himself to be successful as a coach and teacher. Under his leadership, the football and basketball teams were at the top of their divisions during the years of 1944-52. During these same years Mr. Schwartz taught several subjects in- cluding English, math, P. E., history, so- cial studies, band and psychology. He has helped many students in the Big Sandy school system more than they wUl ever realize. On behalf of all the students Mr. Schwartz has helped we wish to thank him. 1 945 DISTRICT CHAMPIONS: ROW 1, L. to R.: Joe Quinn, Lindy Ray, Tom San- ford , Robert Green, Hal Sherbeck. ROW 3: Ro- bert Cole, John Mac- Namera, Jim Sanford. 3 The first thing that I’d like to do is save every day til eternity passes away. Just to spend them with you. Let me take whatever’s wrong and make it right. How sweet it is to love someone; how right it is to care. 5 Sunshine almost always makes me high. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun. 6 I couldn't feel more secure; I know I couldn't feel any better. 7 1973-74: a year of giving, caring, living, sharing ... a year of love shown in many different ways. Many events in this year seemed to involve no love at all; yet the country and the world still overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles through giving, caring, living, and sharing together. In early 1973, the native Americans of our country laid claim to their rights as they captured Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in an ironic reversal of history. Although the American Indians were still oppressed in many ways throughout this year, important gains were made in their fight for freedom climaxed at Wounded Knee. During this year, Americans began to realize that the media was an extremely important instrument of change in our country. Tele- vision programs such as The Waltons and Happy Days followed fashion trends in reviving the styles and moods of recent decades. Movies such as American Graffiti also carried the trend. Other movies were as varied as the American people - Felix the Cat, Jonathon Livingston Seagull, Last Tango in Paris, and everything in between. On the national political level, the energy crisis made the nation painfully aware of our limited resources. Thermostats were turned down, those wishing to buy gasoline were turned away, and a lot of people were turned off. Speed limits were reduced to 55 m.p.h. in each state, including Montana, and Americans began to learn to take their time instead of rushing from one place to another. The Arab-Israeli conflict resumed, as Dr. Henry Kissinger acted as chief diplomat in the Middle East and other locales. Meanwhile, Watergate hearings made impeachment a household word, as Presi- dent Nixon kept insisting upon his innocence. The Women’s Lib movement continued to relax traditionally strict roles for men as well as women, and many more states, including Montana, ratified the Equal Rights Amendment, almost making it an addition to the Constitution. Americans still found time to enjoy the eternal battle of the sexes, though, as Billie Jean King soundly defeated Bobby Riggs in the tennis match of the decade. Tragedy struck in 1974 as the Symbionese Liberation Army kid- napped newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst with a demand for additional food for welfare recipients. Meanwhile, the streaking fad struck the nation, as young people and not-so-young people let it all hang out in public. 1973-74: a year of many unforgettable historical landmarks; some good , some bad, some constructive , some destructive. Through it all, the people of the world, including the residents of Big Sandy, showed they cared through the ways they gave, lived, and shared throughout the year. 9 Just as school began. for the Office 12 So did work The school year began on August 29, and so did the work for the many staffs around the school. and Library Staffs. Throughout the season the hard hit- ting, tackling, and play in general showed great improvement. Individual standouts on defense were Ken Ber- linger, Most Valuable Linesman, with 44 tackles ana 22 assists and Keith Danreuther, with 3 inter- ceptions. On offense, Bruce Robertson was the leading passer with 18 completions out of 37 at- tempts for 448 yards. Leaaing receiver was Most Valuable Player Loren Terry, with 20 catches for 495 yards. Dennis Mertz, voted Most Valuable Back, led in rushing with 380 yards and in scoring with 22 points. The win-loss record wasn't devastating, but there were achievements gained. Loren Terry was second team All-Conference at defensive tackle and offensive flanker. Bruce Robertson also re- ceived honors on the second unit as a defensive halfback. Wyatt Skaalure was selected as Most Improved Player by his teammates and coaches. With the loss of only 5 graduating seniors from this year's squad, the outlook for next season is quite bright. In addition to sponsoring the annual local events such as the talent show, Sno-Ball, reception, style show, and bake-off, the chapter also completed three in-depth projects - School and Community Betterment, Career Education, and the Placement Follow-Up Sur- vey. Other local activities included numerous charity drives, banquets, senior citizen awareness, and many more individual projects. This year Big Sandy also hosted the District III Meeting where Nancy Ray and Amber Zaparynuk served as vice-president and secretary-treasurer, respectively. At this same meeting, Dede Ophus was elected District President and Karolee Ophus was elected Song Leader. Chapter members also were in charge of conducting IMPACT (State Program of Work) workshops. On the divisional level, the club placed first in drama and second in speech. At several of the tournaments during the year. Speech Club participated as a Class A school, since many of the Class B-C schools have programs that are quite smaller than ours and the coach wanted the team to be challenged more before the group could capture sweepstakes honors at the tournaments. Jim Stave, Grade School Custodian Lois Drew and Hazel Cenereux, Cooks 79 Superintendent ’s Message Wc, including the Board of Trustees and myself, have just recently completed a review of the Board Policy Handbook . Some changes Nvere made because of changes in the laws governing schools in Mon- tant and recent court decisions. However, for tne most part the direction that the Big Sandy Schools have taken in the past will con- tinue to be the direction of the schools in the immediate future. In a time when streaking has become the in” thing, many will say that this traditional approach is outdated and should be changed, but a recent survey has shown that most of our students go on to some sort of higher educat ion and enjoy considerable success. Based on this fact and the fact that our students arc generally highly regarded, we shall continue to demand as much from the student body as each individual within it can endure. This means continued dress codes, D and F lists, Honor Rolls, counseling sessions, and the like. I am convinced that our approach to education is the proper one, and I hope that the future bears this out. Congratulations to the Class of 1974. May your future be happy and filled with success. r Boyd Romine 80 Principal’s Message As the 1973-74 school year comes to an end, 1 look back in retrospect and hope that Big Sandy High School has succeeded in giving its students the best preparation for a wide range of occupational choices for life. The diversity of work opportunities in the world makes it more and more difficult to prepare both the stu- dent who anticipates more training and the terminal student in the same high school curriculum. This has placed all high schools in the position of a middle school from which students reach out for some special training of their choice. In order to enrich the high school curriculum, many areas are taught as activities, such as speech, athletics, music, science fairs, FFA, FHA, student government, etc. All of these activities serve a very important facet of later life which cannot be reached through the classroom alone. It is difficult to measure the academic results, but our students continue to rank very high in the nation- wide testing programs wc take part in. In addition to this, the students who participated in High School Week at MSU every year have always ranked in the upper third or half of the best students in Montana. This year was no exception, and Pat Faber received a scholarship as one of the top students in the state. Our activities programs have had a very successful year in all areas. Our speech team continues to be one of the best in the state. Our FHA is again one of the top nine in the state. Music groups rate excellent and superior, and the two science projects to go to state were given excellent and superior, and the two science projects to go to state were given excellent and superior ratings. Larry Ophus's steam car made headlines in several Montana papers and radio stations during the state science fair. All this is possible only through the efforts and talents of all students in Big Sandy High School and the guidance and dedication of the teaching staff. However, the leadership of the senior class is a very important ingredient relative to the success of our activities program each year. Therefore, 1 take this opportunity to congratulate the Class of'74 for their efforts and wish them all continued success in their future efforts. 1 want to congratulate Teresa Ray and her staffs for their all-state ratings for the last years’ annuals, and I am sure this annual, co-editors of which are Marge Handl, Laurie Tyler, and Amber Zaparynuk, also will rank as one of the best. 81 Howard W. Though the Junior Hijgh boys are somewhat inexperienced in the different sports’ fields, they showed outstanding ability in each field this year. Fall started out the football season, and though the boys did not participate in many games, they showea great vigor. With football coming to an end they eagerly prepared for a tough season in basketball. And a tough season it was, for the 7th graders ended it with a 1-10 record and the 8th graders faring little better with a 5-6 record. But with hopes still flying high they entered wrestling and placed well at all the meets, especially the Big Sandy Invitational Tourney. Closing a good season in wrestling, like spring, the boys came alive and joinea track. And as they showed great spirit and ability in the previous activities, they also proved it to be true in track.
