4th in District Tourney The 1971-72 season saw Big Sandy’s basketball team meet some of the toughest teams in the state in Conrad, Shelby, and Malta. Of the games hie Pioneers lost, the third and fourth quarters seemed to be where they usually fell behind with inexperience taking its toll in fouls, turnovers, and poor free throw shooting. The Pioneers were known for their defense as they gave Malta its biggest scare during the conference season by leading for three quarters before falling to a fourth-quarter rally and losing by six points. The Pioneers later held Malta to its lowest scoring output of the year at the district tourney, but lost by thirteen in the semi- finals. After placing 4th in the district tourney, the Pioneers journeyed to Shelby and the divisional toumey where they eliminated Fort Benton on Friday afternoon, but were eliminated themselves by Conrad Saturday morning. The Pioneers are looking forward to the 1972-73 season when they will finally have as many seniors returning as the larger schools enjoy year after year. 27
