The Big Sandy High School Annual Staff Presents the 1972 PIONEER Big Sandy Montana ft? V If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music which he hears, Thoreau however measured or far away. 3 4 Just as School Begins, Vacation ended for 240 stu- dents and another school year began on August 30. Picture top left shows bus students re- turning; lower left pictures Julie Bitz ready for a night of serious studying; and lower right shows afterschool activities of John Reichelt, Curt Larson, Danny Reichelt, and Demrece Ray. 10 So Does the Work. During that first month of school, the Rouser staff was frantically trying to get the pa- per out on time. Football practice was well underway, and work on the annual had be- gun. Top left pictures Glenna Wortman and Kelly Jenkins working on the Rouser; lower left, Mr. Lanning at football practice; and lower right, left to right, Dolores Cikrit, Janet Sheehy, Lynette Gullickson, and Mrs. Ray selling ads for the annual. 11 The Big Sandy Football team had a very successful season, taking 2nd in the conference. Throughout the season the Pioneers were de- feated only once by the team that went on to take 1st in the confer- ence, Fairfield. One highlight of the season was Big Sandy's smashing victory over Fort Benton. This was the first time the Pioneers defeated the Long- horns since they started playing eleven-man football. The new floodlights greatly added to the glory of the season. These were made possible through the cooperation of the whole com- munity. The seniors showed outstanding leadership qualities in their play and on the field. As long as the Pioneers have team leadership and unity we can expect our teams to achieve success. Pioneers Take 2nd in Conference 13 F.H.A. Sponsors Activities The F.H.A. Chapter was very active this year. On Oc- tober 16, it sponsored the an- nual talent show. Upper left, Greg Gullickson with Danny, his ventriloquist doll, is pictur- ed receiving first award from Dar Ophus. The Berlinger chil- dren , lower right, won second prize. Another event put on by the F.H.A. was Dewey day, held on September 7. Dewey Hannum was honored for his 15 years of janitorial service to the school. He is pictured here, upper right, with Mrs. Maxwell, F.H.A. sponsor, Kathi Kulbeck, and Carol Cooke. Lower left shows Carol presenting Dewey with a gift bought by the F.H.A. 14 Activities Held in October Saturday night, October 30, the Halloween dance, sponsored by the school administration and school board, was held. The Black Cat Trophy was won by the Class of '72 for the fifth consecutive time. Upper left pictures Amber Zaparynuk, far right, first prize winner; Randy Beaudette and Eric Skaalure, center, 2nd prize winners; and Bill Romine, left, 3rd prize winner. Upper right shows Harry Green at the dance. F.A.N. Day was held Saturday, October 9. Lower right shows high school students at the demolition derby held that afternoon. Glenna Wortman won the Miss Breck Award; Dar Ophus, upper right, won the title of Miss Talent; and Rae Nita Reichelt, top center, was awarded Spirit of Junior Miss, as well as placing first runner up. Dolores Cikrit, far left, was presented the Miss Scholastic Achievement Award and also won the title of Big Sandy Junior Miss, 1972. Dolores left for the state Junior Miss Pageant in Kalispell on January 3rd, where she received a trophy and a one-hundred dollar scholarship for winning the state Miss Scholastic Achievement Award. Girls on the Go The girls basketball team, sponsored by the G.A.L., opened its 71-72 season by playing the Chinook girls. After a hard-fought game, Chinook won by a score of 28-27. The next two games scheduled were with K-G and another with Chinook. In both games the Big San- dy girls were defeated. Games are to be played with Chester and Fort Benton. A Big Sandy Invitational Girls' Tournament will be held March 10 and 11. Pictures at top left and right reflect the game play- ed here with K-G. Bottom left pictures the A Squad Cheerleaders at a football game. They are from left to right: Lynette Gullickson, Teresa Couitnage, Nona Bitz, Donita Darlington, and Nancy Gullick- son. 21 22 Christmas Party Held December 22 The Student Council held its annual Christmas party December 22, 1971. Speech Club Takes 2nd in State After qualifying 15 members at District, the Speech Club went on to take 2nd at the State Meet. Leading the way for the Club’s second place finish was Dolores Cikrit, left, who placed 2nd in the state in Expository Speaking. Also bringing points was the debate team of Kelly Jenkins and Ed Blazek, lower right, who placed 4th. In the area of Drama the team was not able to bring home a trophy, but one indi- vidual, Rusty Pegar, lower left, did a fine job by placing 2nd in Humorous Solo Acting. Under the expert leadership of Mr. Barsotti, far right, the Speech Club did very well this year. 24 Randy and Kathi Crowned Sno-Ball King and Queen The annual Sno-Ball dance, sponsored by FHA, was held December 30th with the follow- ing seniors chosen as candi- dates: Carol Cooke, Kathi Kulbeck, Dar Ophus, Randy Williams, Jim Drga, and Jack Halter. As the highlight of the even- ing, Randy Williams and Kathi Kulbeck were chosen as King and Queen. At left are Queen - Kathi Kulbeck and King - Randy Williams. The other four candidates are pictured below from left to right as Jim Drga, Carol Cooke, Dar Ophus and Jack Halter. 25 Pioneers Place 4th in Conference; 26 4th in District Tourney The 1971-72 season saw Big Sandy’s basketball team meet some of the toughest teams in the state in Conrad, Shelby, and Malta. Of the games hie Pioneers lost, the third and fourth quarters seemed to be where they usually fell behind with inexperience taking its toll in fouls, turnovers, and poor free throw shooting. The Pioneers were known for their defense as they gave Malta its biggest scare during the conference season by leading for three quarters before falling to a fourth-quarter rally and losing by six points. The Pioneers later held Malta to its lowest scoring output of the year at the district tourney, but lost by thirteen in the semi- finals. After placing 4th in the district tourney, the Pioneers journeyed to Shelby and the divisional toumey where they eliminated Fort Benton on Friday afternoon, but were eliminated themselves by Conrad Saturday morning. The Pioneers are looking forward to the 1972-73 season when they will finally have as many seniors returning as the larger schools enjoy year after year. 27 Wrestlers Take 2nd in State After a fine show throughout the entire season with three first places in individual city tourna- ments, the Pioneer Wrestlers succeeded in defeating Fort Benton, the conference champ- ions, to bring home the divi- sional trophy. Six of the twelve varsity wrestlers captur- ed first place in the divisional tournament, while three others placed in the top four. This total of nine wrestlers was the most Big Sandy had ever quali- fied for the state meet. The wrestlers continued to prove their excellence by placing five men in the state meet held in Missoula, where Randy Williams and Jack Halter, both seniors, placed first. Randy Beaudette took second place honors while Ron Ramer placed third and Jim Drga received fourth place. 29 30 ft 31 Track Team Places First at District The 1972 track season was very successful on a local basis. Al- though there were some disappoint- ments concerning divisional and state, the team had little trouble in taking the first place honors at the district meet in Fort Benton. These pictures of Roger Pearson high jumping, top right; Rusty Danreuther pole vaulting, left center; Dana Faber broad-jumping, far lower left; Ron Pearson broad- jumping, lower center; and Curt Reichelt running the mile, below reflect on that meet. At the state meet in Missoula, Rusty Danreuther pole vaulted for a second place finish, which en- titled him to go to the Meet of Champions in Great Falls. There he placed fourth, which was an outstanding finish. Congratula- tions, Rusty! Speech Club Banquet Held Would the •Hatsomest' person please come forward and claim his cowboy hat? This was one of the lines uttered during the 4th Annual Speech Club Banquet held April 13 1972. For the first time a guest speaker, Mrs. Seelinger, chairman of the Havre Speech Dept., was present. After Mrs. Seelinger pre- sented her mythical speech trip, Mr. Barsotti proceeded to pre- sent the Speech and Drama Awards. They were: Most Valuable Speaker, Kelly Jenkins; Most Improved Speaker, Dolores Cikrit; Most Valuable Thespian, Rusty Pegar; Most Improved Thespian, Dar Ophus. Mr. Barsotti then presented Mrs. Cikrit, upper right, with an honorary N. F. L. member- ship. During the banquet the Speech Club initiates, upper left, presented their skit, Is He Fat. Pictured at bottom is Mr. B. receiving a gift from the senior members of Speech Club. 33 From District, 7 Advance to State These pictures reflect on the District Music Festival this year held in Havre. Both the band, (middle), and the chorus, (bottom), received excellent ratings, while the Junior Boys' quartet, (top), received a superior rating. Glenna Branagan and Peg Simpson also received superior ratings on their vocal solos, and Martin Morley received the same play- ing his piano solo. All those receiving a superior rating will participate in the State Music Meet held in Missoula. Eric Skaalure, Rusty Danreuther, Randy Beaudette, Darell Nepil, Glenna Branagan, and Peg Simpson also earned the privi- lege of singing with the All- State Chorus. 34 “Poems, Prayers, and Promises” in the Making 35 A Memorable Evening April 22 was a very mem- orable evening for all who attended the 1972 prom. The Grand March, the magic mo- ment everyone had been wait- ing for, was highlighted by the crowning of Kelly Jenkins and Rae Nita Reichelt, left, as 1972 Prom King and Queen. The evening's festivities ended with a movie shown in the auditorium. At about the same time I noted that the Principal had announced that there were no less than forty-four students on the honor roll for the first semester. On the surface this probably doesn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary, but in a high school of our size it means that most of our students are working to capacity and more, for there is no other way that one hundred sixty students, more or less, could accomplish all of this. Congratulations to the student body for making the 1971-72 school year a successful one and especially to the Class of 1972 for its example, in- spiration, and leadership. May your ’winning” ways follow you through life. Boyd E. Romine Principal’s Message As we near the end of the 1971-72 school year it is time to look back in retrospect and examine what has happened in the past year. We hope each student has in some way grown in experience and knowledge which will make his or her life more pleasant and meaningful. I wish to commend die student body on its efforts to main- tain and improve the standards of Big Sandy High School through its service organizations such as Student Council, F.F. A., F.H. A., Pep Club, Honor Society, Lettermen's Club, G. A. L., and Speech Club. All have served in some way and I appreciate their efforts. I feel the publications de- partment has done an outstanding job this year on the quality of the Rouser and the purpose it has tried to serve. The Annual Staff and their adviser, Mrs. Ray, and the Editors, Janet Sheehy, Dolores Cikrit, and Lynette Gullickson with hard work and good management, have given new life to our yearbook, financially and editorially. For this I thank you. As in any school the success of these organizations in a large part is the direct result of the efforts of the senior class because it is responsible for much of the leadership. I therefore congratulate the Class of 1972 for its leader- ship and success in Big Sandy High School and I wish all of the members much happiness and continued success in the future. H. W.
