Since each graduating class has had a great responsibility in what our school accomplishes, I might very briefly repeat a few statements made by the Evaluating Team representing the Northwest Accrediting Association after their evaluation of our high school in the spring of 1971 which say a great deal for the Class of 1971 and past classes. 1) The general atmosphere of the school is conducive to the objectives and goals of the community and school. 2) Student expressed a genuine interest in their school, staff, administration, and community. 3) All students appear neat, clean, well-mannered, and conducted themselves with a great deal of poise. 4) Feelings of students as one — not as separate groups. If future classes will do as well in their efforts to contribute to a GOOD school, then Big Sandy High School will continue to be known throughout the state. Congratulations to the Class of 1971. May all of you know the success you desire and deserve. 0--------- 2 . ------------------- 2- PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Our society is and has always been a changing society directed by the efforts of its members. I am sure it can be said that with each year we observe change in our school and community some of this change will be obvious to everyone but much of it is of the intangible nature which so often goes unnoticed by those to whom it is happening. My hope is that we continue to survey and direct our efforts so that all of the changes we bring about, tangible and intangible, can be looked back on at some future time with pride and feeling of real accomplishment and not change for the sake of change. One of the most noticeable changes this year, because of its spectator nature, is the lighting of the football field. This project ends the era of the afternoon football games and will set a much different pattern for Saturday evening entertainment in Big Sandy. These lights are a result, in part, of the efforts you as students have made through your organizations. This book is the result of a change in school where its compulsion was the responsibility of students outside of regularly scheduled class time. I congratulate the annual staff, your advisor, the editors, Maureen Sternberg and Sue Bliss, for your many hours of work and persistence. FACULTY MEMBERS Andrew Dyka Montana State University, B. You, more than any other generation before you, seem to be truly concerned with the world around you and with your concern comes a necessary desire to change the things that you believe wrong. A famous man once wrote: Change is the essence of freedom. Guard carefully your newly acquired rights as adults and value your education for it is through these that you gain the power to make changes in your world and it is through your ability to change that you will remain truly free.
