We, the Annual Staff of Big Sandy High School, Present the 1970 PIONEER To you as your key to remembrances of this past year. As you look back over the year, may your memories be many and your sorrows few. The Staff We dedicate the 1970 PIONEER to the memory of our dear, departed classmate RONALD OLSON. TO RON: Two years have gone by now Still, whenever I hear your name I close my eyes and wonder Why? Where are you? I want to know It can't be--no It's not in the cold earth you lie. Two years have gone by now Still, when it's dark I feel alone. I mustn't cry. Where are you? I've looked you know— On the football field, in class, no. . . And then I glance toward the sky. Two years have gone by now Still, we cannot forget. You remain our classmate; In our hearts you'll never die. 2 Barbara Branagan We dedicate this page to the memory of KEVIN UPHAM A TRIBUTE TO KEVIN A gull flew over my head as I Walked along the sandy beach today. The sun was just rising above the cliffs-- The way it does in its usual way. And the clouds hurried by as if they Knew some secret, but they would not say. All-the-while a breeze was blowing— The way it does in its usual way. The tide came in and the tide went out To mark the passing of another day, While waves washed sand far out to sea— The way they do in their usual way. I watched nature's sunset as she Brought to close another day. And I felt again the pain of Knowing you left us today. I wanted to tell you good-bye, But they say it's better this way. There's just so much I left unsaid, So much even words could never say. But they tell me you'd have wanted it all this way, And I am resolved to accept As truth what they will say. And now as I turn to leave this beach Where 1 found again my life today, I know that death and pain will come again And life goes on---the usual way. This to me, in view of the pressures ex- erted nationally, on the state level, and even locally, speaks very highly of our youth and I would like to take this opportunity to express my thanks and appreciation for their fine cooperation over the years. It is my sincere wish that as the students of Big Sandy High School go forth into the world, they maintain their 'cool', accept the challenges they are sure to face, and carry out the responsible es that will certainly be theirs. Congratulations to the Class of 1970. May all of your aspirations and goals be achieved. £ !H?e f 48 Principal’s Message The Class of 1970 is the first class to have graduated from high school since man accomplished the feat of a moon landing. History will record that we are all living in a new era and you, as the first graduates, will be called upon in some way for leadership in this new era. Every graduating class has faced a similar challenge, but the assignment becomes more difficult when all around you there are people protesting, picketing, and striking against the existing organizations through which those things they have and use were produced. In each generation the challenge to keep this country free and strong becomes greater for you who are strong because of the growing number who feel that others owe them a living and who will in no way expect to carry their own weight. As I consider the plight of our government today, the rebellious attitude of many students and faculty members of our universities, the apathy of millions who I hope are not in agreement with the disregard for law and order and willful destruction of property, I am seized by a feeling of despair for the future of our country. There is a brighter side, however. I have confidence in the majority of our Big Sandy students, because I feel that your sense of values are good and you are genuinely concerned. I take consolation in the fact that this can be said about a large percentage of the students throughout our nation. The success of our past graduates contributes to this confidence. I congratulate the co-editors, Sharon Halley and Nora Ophus, their staff and their adivsor, Mr. Waters, for the production of this fine annual. Again I say that I am proud of the students of Big Sandy and my hope is that you graduates and under-graduates will find peace with God through success with mam in whatever you choose to do. 49 JAMES BARSOTTI Northern Montana College, B. That Was Built in the Past. -The Annual Staff Looking over the past year, we can see this has been another eventful year. We were given our share of excitement, fun, surprises, laughs, and, of course, sorrows, especially in the loss of our dear friend, Kevin. We have tried to catch some of these precious mements in pictures and put them together to form a sort of scrapbook to preserve some of the year's events. We feel it is now only appropriate to thank all those who have helped in any way to put out the 1969-1970 Annual. We would like to especially thank Mr. Cornett, Mr. Helmbrecht, Mr. Ojala and any others who contributed pictures to be used in the PIONEER. Also we sould like to thank our Annual Staff for their faithfulness and support during the school year. We can, in no way, express our thanks to Mr. Waters for all his help and encouragement during the year when the Annual seemed to be nothing but a problem. We can also truthfully say, we learned together just what putting out an annual means. Last, but by far least, a special thanks should be extended to the wonderful people of our community for showing their faith and support in our Annual and school by purchasing the book and ads. May you always be as generous and kind. Best wishes and may God bless, Nora Ophus and Sharon Halley 1970 PIONEER Co-Editors Index Archer, Dona-21,36, 37,38,40, 42, 43,62, 72.
