School Clerk School Secretary 4 Bill Snow Lela Wortman Superintendent's Message Each year when asked to write up a Superintendent's Message, it is hard for me to comprehend that another school year has come to an end. I wonder sometimes if our schools are keeping up with the fast and changing pace of our present day society. I can only satisfy myself by circulating around and observing that education is what is foremost in the minds of our students, and that a real effort is being made to properly prepare our students for whatever they may choose as their life's work. I believe that the entire student body of the Big Sandy Public Schools is to be congratulated for making our educational process a positive one. I especially congratulate the class of 1969. Your enthusiasm and leadership will be missed. However, we must continue and so must you. May each of you have a successful and useful life. 5 Principal's Message During a time when so many are involved in protest and riot, especially on our uni versi tv and college campuses, it is wonderful to be able to announce that the 1968-69 Big Sandy school year has been a successful one. Our students for the most part have shown a desire to find the truth but have also recognized the need to consider the desires of others in their quest for personal liberty. This year the student council inaugurated a Student Government Day to give more meaning and importance to student body elections. I feel this day was a great success and much of this success was due to the leadership and planning by Don Stack, a member of student council who has worked on this project throughout this year. I congratulate the student council, the student body, and Don Stack for their efforts and success in student government. I am sure this annual will point out many other events from the 1968-69 school year that have marked it as a success in the lives of our students and community and will serve as a pleasant reminder in years to come. In retrospect I would like to add that the grades earned by our graduates attending universities and colleges have been very pleasing to us. We feel they compare very favorably with what they received while in attendance at Big Sandy High School. We accept this as a reflection of their home and school training in Big Sandy. I congratulate Mr. Graham and his editors Teresa Humphrey, Diane Edwards, and Carolyn Hansen on the excellent job which they have done on this annual. Your efforts in this publication will be appreciated more as each year passes. 6 Faculty JAMES BARSOTTI Northern Montana College, B. Pre-graduation activities for the class included a 3-day sneak trip to Flathead Lake, beginning with a bus ride at six o'clock Friday morning, May 9. After returning Sunday afternoon, the seniors prepared for baccalaureate. Reverend Archer conducted the service which was followed by a reception held in the F. E. Miley School. Graduation day, May 21, began with Senior Breakfast served by the mothers of the graduating seniors in the Methodist Fellowship Hall. It was followed that evening by a dinner given by the Ed Bucholzes, Mrs. Alf Berglund, Mrs. Marshall Kulbeck, and Mrs. Keith Edwards. After the supper the seniors began preparing for the graduation ceremony that night. Twelve of these students went to state where they represented Big Sandy High School well. Big Sandy finished third in the state in Class B with points earned by Chuck Simpson, who placed third in Oratorical, and Peggy O'Malley, who placed fourth in Girl's Extempt. Although the speech team, led by Mr. Barsotti, worked hard all year, there was time out for other things. With a pizza party, potluck, and picnic, the entire year was filled with fun. 56 L. to R.: Connie Monson, Vice-President; Kirsten Skaalure, President; Eileen Ostrom, Secretary; Peggy O'Malley, Student Council Representative. The Big Sandy High School track team worked hard, improved themselves and, although limited in number to only twelve members, placed high in all meets. At the eight-team Chester Invitational the Pioneer cindermen placed second, and at the North Central Con- ference Divisional meet they placed fourth. The team was led by Captain Ed Ray, a senior letterman. Ed completed an outstanding high school career in athletics. He was named the most valuable track man. Named as the most improved track man was Ken Haugen who won both the mile and two-mile runs in the divisional meet. 81 Monkey business! Ken Haugen—Most Improved Track Action 82 Principal's Message Twenty-five years have passed since twenty-four members of the class of '44, including yours truly, left the revered halls of old Big Sandy High. Then, as at the present time, our country was involved in a foreign entanglement, and little time passed before a great many fellows found themselves enjoined in Uncle Sam's military services. A great many of us didn't have definite aims for the future. How different it is today, when, under excellent guidance and counseling, a large percentage of the graduates of '69 had their plans made since they were sophomores. Significant changes in the educational sphere of Big Sandy have taken place in the past quarter century: two fine buildings, a teaching staff and student body twice as large, expanded library facilities, the latest text- books, guidance counselors, and many other untold advantages. To you who look to the future, and who will be the leaders, keep in mind that all generations have their problems. You should be better equipped to deal with our complex world. Good luck!
