To Martha Rae Steven: Even though you have passed away, and from our midst have gone, your smile and joy will always stay; your memory lives on. Class of '66 2 Demq ioTi It is with extreme pride and deep appreciation that we, the senior class, dedicate the 1968 PIONEER annual to our class sponsor—Mr. Chvilicek. Through his wisdom, understand- ing, patience, and direction, he has played an important role in preparing us for the future. His constant willingness to help and his sin- cere devotion to the Class of 1968 has earned him the respect and admiration of all. 3 School Board ROW 1, L. to R.: Art Weaver, Fred Bitz, Ed Blazek, Bill Snow, Clerk. ROW 2: Don Reichelt, Ronald Upham, Chairman; Frank Drga, John Sheehy. T rustees At Work Mr. Quinn's retire- ment this year marked the end of fifteen years of service as a school board trustee. He served eight of those years as chairman of the board. Bill Snow, school clerk Mr. and Mrs. T. M. Quinn at a banquet honoring them. 4 Superintendent’s Message As we are in the process of ending the 1967-1968 school term and I have almost completed a full year as administrator of the Big Sandy Public Schools, I think it would be fitting to reflect a bit on what 1 believe to be true of its students past and present. It is apparent that the students of Big Sandy High School have continued, over the years, to excel in the various aspects of the educational program. Academic, music, athletics, pub- lications, and student government are just some of the portions of the program that have experienced great success. It is my hope that this trend will continue in the future and that graduates from Big Sandy High School participate actively in making this world a better place in which to live. Congratulations to the Class of 1968. May each of you have a successful and useful life. BOYD E. ROMINE J Minot State College, B. A., University of North Dakota, M. Ed., University of Montana, Superintendent 5 Principal’s Message HOWARD W. HAMMOND University of Montana, B.A., M.A., High School Principal, Mathematics, Honor Society, Student Council. An old Greek philosopher once said, You cannot teach a man anything; you can only help him to find it within himself. If this is true to any degree, it is my sincere hope that we have helped each student in some way to discover new and stimulating ideas within himself which will enable him to live in this present-day society as a happy, successful human being. It is also my wish that a sense of responsibility be one of these discoveries, responsibility based on love, justice, and compas- sion. The many extra hours of work by students, staff, and advisor to bring about the successful completion of this fine annual is real evidence of a keen sense of responsibility. I wish to congratulate the co-editors, Carol Chauvet and Cheryl Rutledge, and Mr. Les Graham, their advisor, on a job well done. 6 Faculty JAMES BARSOTTI Northern Montana College, B. Realizing that belonging to Honor Society should be more than an '’honor11, this year's club made several serious attempts to enable more students to become members. This year, for the first time, students were exempted from taking semester tests in classes in which they had maintained a B average or better during the semester. In the spring, Honor Society sponsored a school clean-up day, during which all students participated in an effort to improve the appearance of the school grounds. Each year Big Sandy has added many more students to the list of scholars in the National Honor Society. Pre-requisites for joining this society include being on the honor roll for three consecutive six-weeks’ periods, being reviewed by a faculty committee, and being voted into the society by the present members. This year the Club hosted the District Science Fair, which proved to be very successful. Gaye Keller, a sophomore, was the only student representing Big Sandy High School in state competition. Her project, Differentiation of Two Montana Grass Viruses on the Basis of Their Host Range, received an award of Superior at the District Science Fair and an award of Good at the State Sci- ence Fair.
