PrincipaFs Message The 1966-67 school year may well be remembered as a year of great joys and extreme sorrows in the Big Sandy community. The success of Big Sandy alumni in colleges of their choice has been encouraging. The success of the many activities of the school has been high in degree. I think it is well to mention a few of the achievement high- lights. In music, several have been chosen to All-State Band and Chorus. Ralph Schwartz, one of the two sophomores selected to All-Northwest Band, was awarded first chair in the trumpet section. The Speech Club has made other schools, large and small, recognize it as a constant contender in all divisions of the activity. The basketball team won the Divisional Championship and placed fourth in the state. The wrestling team won the Divisional and State Championships. In addition, Duane Olson, a three-time state champion in the 145 pound class, was chosen the outstanding wres- tler of the tournament. The team also received the Bob Olson Award for the outstand- ing wrestling team in the State Tournament, and Coach Fred Salmonsen was chosen as Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches. Several officers of FFA received gold awards and Dennis LaBuda was chosen All-State Farmer. These achievements and joys were constantly tempered by the tragic deaths of David Haakenson, Fern Minier, and Martha Steven. Never in the history of Big Sandy has a student body tasted the joys of such success and at the same time faced the grief of so much tragedy. The recording of events from a setting of such contrasts would be a challenge for any staff and sponsor. I wish to congratulate Mr. Salmonsen and his staff for the fine job they have done. 6

Trustees At Work This year has been one of special challenge for local school trustees as the construc- tion of an addition to the high school building was undertaken without a bond issue. Af- ter a good deal of deliberation, these men determined that the savings to be realized by avoiding a bond issue were worth the additional responsibility and problems they would assume. By asking the people to approve special levies in excess of operational needs in the 1965-1966 and 1966-1967 budget years, the construction of the $80,000 addition was accomplished at a savings of at least $18,000. This building program is only one example of the willingness of these men to assume responsibility and leadership in providing quality education for local students. Al- though money and taxes are constant considerations in all their deliberations, there is consistent evidence that these men always place the educational welfare of local children above any other considerations. Although frequently criticized from numerous sources, the election and re-election of these men to the Board indicates the commu- nity dedication to this desire for quality education for the young people of this area.
