The A nnualStaff Of Big Sandy High School Big Sandy, Montana Presents The PIONEER 1967 New addition to high school (1967) We dedicate this page to the remembrance of David Haakensen, helicopter pilot who lost his life in combat in Vietnam while attempting to rescue wounded comrades. 2 In Memoriam Class Of'63 Dedication The fiftieth graduating class of Big Sandy High School is honored to dedicate the 1967 PIONEER to the com- munity of Big Sandy. In doing so, we wish to express our gratitude to the people who have supported us in school and community life. Had it not been for the guidance given us by this community, many of our hopes and goals could not have been fulfilled. 3 Superintendent s Message RAYL. PECK College of Great Falls, B. A. , University of Montana, M.A., Montana State University, Superintendent, German, History We tend to remember each school year by some important or impressive event that happened during that year. This year there will be a number of memorable events for you: (1) winning the State Wrestling Championship, (2) placing fourth in the State Basketball Tournament (much to the surprise of the so-called experts ), (3) com- pletion of the new addition to the high school building at midyear, (4) other events of a more personal nature that each of you will remember in a special way. The first three items contribute to the image of the Big Sandy School and community. They become a part of a tradition for those who will follow you in the years to come. The fourth item will contribute to your personal image as long as you may live. Congratulations to the members of the Class of 1967! Special congratulations to the hard working annual staff and their adviser, Mr. Salmonsen, for this fine yearbook. I am sure it will bring many happy memories to all of us. 4 Trustees At Work This year has been one of special challenge for local school trustees as the construc- tion of an addition to the high school building was undertaken without a bond issue. Af- ter a good deal of deliberation, these men determined that the savings to be realized by avoiding a bond issue were worth the additional responsibility and problems they would assume. By asking the people to approve special levies in excess of operational needs in the 1965-1966 and 1966-1967 budget years, the construction of the $80,000 addition was accomplished at a savings of at least $18,000. This building program is only one example of the willingness of these men to assume responsibility and leadership in providing quality education for local students. Al- though money and taxes are constant considerations in all their deliberations, there is consistent evidence that these men always place the educational welfare of local children above any other considerations. Although frequently criticized from numerous sources, the election and re-election of these men to the Board indicates the commu- nity dedication to this desire for quality education for the young people of this area. The success of Big Sandy alumni in colleges of their choice has been encouraging. The success of the many activities of the school has been high in degree. I think it is well to mention a few of the achievement high- lights. In music, several have been chosen to All-State Band and Chorus. Ralph Schwartz, one of the two sophomores selected to All-Northwest Band, was awarded first chair in the trumpet section. The Speech Club has made other schools, large and small, recognize it as a constant contender in all divisions of the activity. The basketball team won the Divisional Championship and placed fourth in the state. The wrestling team won the Divisional and State Championships. In addition, Duane Olson, a three-time state champion in the 145 pound class, was chosen the outstanding wres- tler of the tournament. The team also received the Bob Olson Award for the outstand- ing wrestling team in the State Tournament, and Coach Fred Salmonsen was chosen as Coach of the Year by his fellow coaches. Several officers of FFA received gold awards and Dennis LaBuda was chosen All-State Farmer. These achievements and joys were constantly tempered by the tragic deaths of David Haakenson, Fern Minier, and Martha Steven. Never in the history of Big Sandy has a student body tasted the joys of such success and at the same time faced the grief of so much tragedy. The recording of events from a setting of such contrasts would be a challenge for any staff and sponsor. I wish to congratulate Mr. Salmonsen and his staff for the fine job they have done. 6 Faculty JAMES BARSOTTI Northern Montana College, B.S., English, French, Speech and Debate, Speech Club Adviser KENNETH ENCELLANT Carroll College, B.A., Social Science, Physical Education, Assistant Football Coach, Assistant Basketball Coach ROBERT CHV1LICEK Carroll College, B.A., Idaho State Univer- sity, M.S., Mathematics, Science Club Adviser, Junior Class Sponsor 7 LAWRENCE GREEN Northern Montana College, B.S., English, Library, Senior Class Sponsor MARY FORRESTER Northern Teachers' College, B.S., Physical Education, Girls' Track Coach JOHN HASHLEY University of Wyoming, B.S., Vocational Agriculture, Mechanical Drawing, Future Farmers of America Adviser 8 AL KOBER Montana State University, B.
