Study. . . . 5 Preparation. . . PHYSICAL 6 Enjoyment. . . MORAL Church of God. . . HAMMOND’S MESSAGE MR. HAMMOND Seniors, the completion of this annual marks another milestone on the road of life along which you may rush, be pushed, or systematically proceed, depending on many things, but especially upon you. This class of 1965 is of special significance to me as I have been afforded the pleasure of watching your progress and struggles from the day most of you were escorted to the old brick grade school for the first day of school until graduation. That first day you were a mixture of anxious, frightened, and joyous six-year-olds whose faces were mirrors of mixed anticipation. These twelve years have been filled with ups and downs, at first changing every day and sometimes every hour. I have enjoyed being allowed to be a part of these joys, and I hope, along with the other members of the faculty, we have helped you in the right direction when times seemed so dark to you. As a class you have been a credit to the Big Sandy school system—we hope your twelve years of school here have prepared you to be able to pursue real and worthwhile objectives in life. In closing, let me ask you, have you been carried along by the success of your class or have you been a useful unit of student energy to bring about this success? In the years to come, make sure you are useful in- dividuals in your communities, and I am sure you will be. 10 SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE Although this message is only an annual affair, it is often difficult to select a topic that is appropriate for a school yearbook. How does a school administrator write something meaningful that is not highly repetitious? Something that may be words of wisdom for the reader? For whom is he really writing the message and for what purpose? Assuming that the answer to the last question is the most important and that answer is the students, this brief message is directed to them, especially the Class of 1965. Although most students very likely feel that they recognize the efforts of their parents, teachers, and community to provide them with the very best education that is possible, I wonder how many see the tremendous sacrifice this education calls for in the small schools of Montana today? Cost of education has advanced a good deal faster than most other costs in our society today as a result of tremendous changes in the field of education and the expanding number of school-age citizens. Even with all these sacrifices, we educators recognize that we are not meeting the needs of all of you in providing you the education you need and want. This one point might well be the source of all the frustration that dedicated teachers feel in the modern society of this generation. The frustration stems from the simple fact that no matter how much time, money and effort is spent on education, all of you would not profit equally. Best wishes to the Class of 1965 and congratulations to the Annual Staff on the production of this fine book. MR. PECK 11 DEDICATION MR. HAMMOND The Annual Staff of 1965 wishes to dedicate the PIONEER to Mr. Howard Hammond in appreciation for the many years of service and long hard hours of work he has given to the Big Sandy school system and to the community. His sense of humor, his sincere interest in each student, and his guiding hand extended to help the student through his trials will be remembered by all. 12 IN APPRECIATION To BILL OJALA For His Services MR. RILEY'S MESSAGE The staff of the Miley School should like to add it's good wishes to the graduating class. We sincerely hope that they realize their ambitions in life, and we also expect that their goals are set high enough. We hope, too, that the youngsters under our care will see fit to continue their education in the years to come. We pray that they are getting the proper foundation now for the future. This changing world is demanding more and more from them and us, and it will be only through hard work on both our parts that we can meet the challenges of the future. A m ‘ '• I - «V • ‘I ' § f Only the Lonely The teacher of 1986. Eavesdropping, Scarlett? Ring Around the Rosy 118 119 Nearing the completiton of another school year--the last for the forty seniors--and coining to the end of this year's Annual, I feel it is only appropriate to thank all those who have helped— in any way--to put out the 1964-1965 Pioneer. I would like to thank especially Karen Heen and Gaynell Gullickson and the remainder of the Annual Staff for their faithfulness during the school year. I would also like to thank Mr. Oja la and Skip Foussard, our own photographer, plus any others who contributed pictures to be used in the Pioneer. I think a special thanks should be extended to all those girls who sacrificed the opportunity to witness the Big Sandy-Fort Benton home game to meet an Annual deadline. There is no way I can express my thanks to Mrs. Dietz for all her help and encouragement , during the last year when the Annual seemed to be nothing but a problem. We learned to- gether just what putting out an annual meant. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the people of the community for showing their faith in our Annual by purchasing the book. Thank you for a most enjoyable experience. Best wishes, Pearl Peck, Editor 120
