Text from Pages 1 - 92 of the 1956 volume:

We take great pleasure in dedicating this this edition of the Pioneer to our parents who have guided our footsteps thus far and stayed us on our goal-- graduation. You have dedicated your lives to us, in that, you have given unselfishly of your time and love. Without your patience and gentle kindness we would have found the road much rougher. You have made of us good citizens to carry on the best of your traditions. Even though we may not show much gratitude to you now, we feel it deep in our hearts and we know it shall continue to grow as time passes. Titi. Titii.. Tilai aid Saidiy Titi. This record shall remain, even though time may alter, and in other ways, erase many clear and vivid mental pictures we now possess. In these pages, then, shall be brought back to life all those not so perspicuous memories. sponsors MESSUS It is impossible for anyone to give you a message which will serve as a solution to the problems you must face. Since you have been successfully exposed to twelve years of formal education, you no doubt feel you are pretty well equipped to solve your own problems. Now you must apply what you have learned in a practical way, and use the many skills you have acquired in your several chosen fields of endeavor. Since knowing you and working with you, I am convinced you will all do well in'whatever you have to do. You will be proud of the fact that you were a student of Big Sandy High School--just make sure Big Sandy is always proud that you were one of her students. mmsmTiM B. H. The books were all put On the Shelves with care, And with sighs of relief The Seniors left them there. The Grad's all filed Up the long, long aisle. And took their seats With a sad little smile. They are just realizing That they are almost through, And going out into the world Which to them is still so new. All these thoughts Are passing through their heads. And they are fast beginning To think of it with dread. The address has now been given. The class roll is being called: Esther, Normand, Hap, Larry, Charlotte, Stan, Ethel, Arrie, And Sandra, a good friend of all, Byron, Vera, Larry, Arlen, Veva, Janis, Bob and Milan. Yes, all seventeen are here. To make complete Their last High School year. The diplomas have been received. And now the Seniors stand To receive the Lord's Blessing That will guide them o'er the land. by Arrie Maxwell IAN EGOISTICAL, HYPOTHETICAL SATIRE TO MOTHER NATURE'S UNHABITUAL BEAUTY, DO DEGRADE, KNEEL AND BOW DOWN TO YOU AND CONSUMMATE ANY OBLIGATION THAT YOU APPENTANCY, OH POTENTATE SENIORS. This was probably the first thing that was assigned for us to learn in the fall of '52 when we entered B. S. H. S. The first three weeks of school were spent getting acquainted with the new ideas, electing class officers, and carrying out the orders of the almighty seniors! ! We elected class officers on September 3rd. They were President, Charlotte Svennungsen; Vice President, Esther Berg; Secretary-Treasurer, Arlene Fisher; Student Council Representative, Arrie Maxwell; Cheerleader, Mary Ann Pfrimmer; and Mrs. Bierwagon was elected as our class sponsor. The remainder of the class was David Eve, Normand Clixby, Lawrence Diacon, Frank Henderson, Gary Henderson, Larry Jappe, Sandra Kaiser, Ethel Kalanick, Janis Kaste, Robert Laursen, Veva Marten, Arlen Ojala, Byron Ophus, Milan Pavlovick, Jim Peterson, Vera Sanford and Raymond Williams. We thanked the Seniors for the sumptuous acquaintance they gave us to the school by having a Freshman Return Party in honor of them. In our second six weeks of school we had a new face in our midst, Maureen Melton from Havre Central. Due to the fact that our class didn't sell enough Activity tickets we were given the honor of putting on the Activity Ticket Party which turned out very successful. Next, on the list of coming events was the carnival. We elected Maureen Melton and Larry Jappe as our choice for king and queen but failed to win the crown. At the beginning of the 2nd semester we were sorry to discover that we had lost Raymond Williams. The remainder of the year was quite uneventful and we left with the happy feeling that we were now sophomores. 16 When we returned the fall of '53 we discovered that we had lost Frank Hender- son. He had transferred to Havre. Lynn Johnson joined our class for a short time. We elected class officers and sponsor who were: President, Larry Diacon; Vice President, Arlen Ojala; Secretary and Treasurer, Esther Berg; Student Council Representative, Sandra Kaiser and Sponsor, Mr. Ost. Because we made such a success of the activity ticket party in '52 we were given the honor of doing so again in '53. It seemed to be a highlight in our high school years. This year our candidates for carnival king and queen were Charlotte Svennung- sen and Larry Diacon. But again we weren't the choice of the public. We carried out the tradition of the sophomores putting on the Athletic Banquet, on April 28, 1954. It was well attended. Spring was in the air and it was once again Prom T-ime , and with the Prom comes the Junior-Senior Banquet. The sophomore girls were selected to serve at the banquet. Since spring fever was getting the best of us, Mr. Ost took the biology class on a field trip in the mountains. A very enjoyable day was spent there. To climax our sophomore year Maureen Melton was elected from our class to ride on the Chamber of Commerce float at the May Festival in Havre on May 8, 1954. We came back in the fall of '54 quite enthusiastic with the idea that we were now upperclassmen. David Eve had transferred to Great Falls, but to replace him was Stan Tichenor from Seattle. The officers elected this year were: President, Larry Diacon; Vice President, Janis Kaste; Secretary and Treasurer, Esther Berg; Student Council Representa- tive, Sandra Kaiser and Mr. Burley was chosen as class sponsor. Mary Ann Pfrimmer resigned as cheerleader and Charlotte Svennungsen was elected to re- place her. We lost the Activity Ticket Sales again this year and had to put on the party, October 19, 1954. On November 20, the carnival was held and we nominated Sandra Kaiser and Nor- mand Clixby as our candidates for king and queen. The high lights for that year were the Junior Play, Meet Corliss Archer and the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom. Our play was held April 18 and 19, and went over as a big hit with lots of laughs. Underwater was our Prom Theme and we carried it out throughout the banquet. A very beautiful job of decorating was done by the Juniors, which kept them busy until tne last minute. We danced to the music of The Melody Makers from Havre. FIELD TRIP MEET CORLISS ARCHER 7 We ushered at Bac- calaureate and Com- mencement for the class of '55 and another phase of our final goal had been accomplished. With the thought of graduation and a diploma in our mind we got right down to business. We noted that three of our former classmates had not returned. They were: Arlene Fisher, Maureen Melton, and Mary Ann Pfrimmer. The officers elect- ed for our last year were: President, Larry DiaconjVice President, Janis KastejSecretary- Treasurer, Esther Berg; Student Council Repre- sentative, Veva Marten; and sponsor, Mr. Burley. We welcomed 28 Freshmen with initiation on September 16. A dance was held in honor of them at the gym. The first thing that faced us was our annual. We signed up with Myers Inc. and got right to work. Dorothy Baldry from Scobey joined us the second six weeks period. Homecoming has been established as a festivity to be held once every five years. 1955 was the year. This year the queen came from the Junior Class and Charlotte Svennung- sen and Dorothy Baldry were chosen as her attendants. It was carnival time again and this year we nominated Janis Kaste and Arlen Ojala for our king and queen candidates. On November 17 and 18 we presented our Senior Class Play, a tremendous Broadway hit in 1940-41, Arsenic and Old Lace. It was a hit again in '55 because under the direction of Mr. Simons, we put it over with great success. FROSH INITIATION UNDERWATER 18 ARSENIC AND OLD LACE ARSENIC AND OLD LACE” We all got shot! ! Literally speaking that is. Mr. Hester from Billings came down and took our Senior Portraits on November 16. Don't ever believe anything a horse tells you. These are the closing words of a speech given by one of the seniors at our speech breakfast. Miss Hughes and the freshman girls arranged a breakfast for Mr. Simons and us to conclude our speech class. This also brought to a close the end of our first semester of our last year. Since we did such a good job on our other ticket parties and since we had so much experience in entertaining, we again put on the Activity Ticket Party. We danced in the old school assembly to the music of the High School Orchestra. Dorothy Baldry left us at the end of the semester to finish her school term at Dillon, Montana. High School Week was held in Bozeman on May 3,4, and 5. Those chosen to attend because of their scholastic ability were: Veva Marten, Sandra Kaiser, Vera Sanford, and Lawrence Diacon. Early one morning a journey was started and all was quiet. It was sneak day. This is one trip that will never be forgotten. The year was drawing to a close and the honors of graduating seniors were being bestowed upon us. The Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom were held in our honor. The hands of time were moving onward and we were honored at a Senior Breakfast. Quiet Baccalaureate services were held for us on May 27. Commencement was held the following Wednesday. Four years of hard work had paid off well for three of our graduating classmates. Veva Marten had worked her way to Vale- dictorian. For the first time in the history of B. S. H. S. there was a tie for Salutatorian. Sandra Kaiser and Vera Sanford were both named second highest. We had now come to the end of our High School Careers and received the diplomas we had waited for so long. The lessons we learned and the education we received will never be forgotten. 9 PROPHECy It's the year 1976 and the biggest Alumni Homecoming Dance in the history of Big Sandy High School is in full swing. Hap Henderson's Skyline Riders are playing for the big occasion. Featured tonight with the orchestra is the World Famous harmonica player, Bob Laursen, Bob just walked in carrying his diamond-studded harmonica, followed by his body-guard, Jim Peterson, Montana's -— ray-gun shot. [ didn't think Vera Sanford would make it, but s she is now —Wow! I've really been hearing a about her since she's become New York's top fashion model. Arlen Ojala, notorious playboy of Hollywood, has been following her around the world so he should be coming in the door any minute now. Arrie Maxwell just blew in the door. It seems she's been traveling from plan- et to planet--well, that's possible for he with her millions! She's hired Esther If 111 PMr ■ ■ WM P Berg to chauffeur her around in her private rocket, since Esther did so well in the Air Force. What's that racket in the middle of the floor? Why it's Stan Tichenor, Senator from Montana, giving a cam- — paign speech! I guess it is election year at that. ' —- 3 Say, seeing Veva Marten and Larry Diacon A £ here reminds me of an article I read a few days ago about them starting on their 13th mil- L i(M „ J lion. Well, that just goes to show what you can W-, do with brains. Byron Ophus and his small family just „ arrived in a bus he borrowed from his famous P. U. Used Car Lot here in Big Sandy. Just recently Milan quit the bootlegging business to become one of Byron's chief sales- men and ever since he's been trying to convince the folks who live out his way that they should start driving cars instead of horses. - Rumor has it that Ethel Kalanick couldn't come since she's being married tonight. (For the 13th time. ) Since it didn't work out too well the other times, maybe 13 is her lucky number. Larry Jappe is out in the kitchen bothering the cook again--it seems hehas to taste thefood every- where he goes, since he's been appointed Official Food Taster for the Baby Food and Baby Drinks Inc. Sandra Kaiser is in the toll business again. This time she bought the Brooklyn Bridge and has moved it to Fort Benton where she's making a terrific fortune. She also has a part-time job at Normand Clixby's Drive-In Grocery, also loca- ted in Fort Benton. This is the first grocery store of its type to have delivery service by air. The spotlight is swinging toward the door now—we wonder why anyone would be coming now, since the dance is practically over. C ' Why, of course, it's Janis Kaste-late as usual! Charlotte Svennungsenhas just rushed over to the door to meet her. She still has the ) paper and pencil that she's been carrying around taking notes all night for her and Janis' Love- lorn Column in the Space Gazette. They are resigned to being Big Sandy's most prominent old maids. We, the reporters, have been observing this dance from our sta- tion here on Mars, but since Arlen Ojala just rushed in the door and is dancing with Vera, that makes everyone of the class of '56 pres- ent and accounted for and makes our job complete, so we'll leave you at this point. If any addition al information on this Alumni Dance is desired, stop in at our office at 0000 Rocket Trail in Space City, and we'll see you later in our crater.
