Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1955 volume:

Big Sandy, Montana We dedicate this 1955 edition of the PIONEER to Mr. Howard W. Hammond, better known as Swede , who has so generously given his effort and time to better promote the welfare of this school. The many jobs and the man are very often taken for granted, but careful reflection on anyone's part will show the multiplicity of student activities he directs and sponsors so successfully. We seniors, especially, wish to thank him for his guidance as a class sponsor for the past three years and for rendering us his able assistance for setting up the 1955 annual. Out of the old fieldes cometh al this new corne fro yere to yere, And out of the fresh woodes cometh al these new flowres here. BECAUSE of the intangibles, history cannot be retold; how foolish is man to undertake it-- and yet, if one portion of this book gives you cause to remem- ber, we have accomplished our purpose. Words and pictures are not emphatic in themselves; they are merely a medium on which memory thrives. 3 SufcetirttencUrtti. TJteAMiqe You seniors of 1955 will soon begin to make your contributions to the Atomic Age. This is an extremely complex period in history, and the bal- ance of the good or bad that will come of it lies pretty much in your hands. Misuse of the atomic energy can throw the world into chaos and de- struction, but intelligent and wise application of this tremendous force will advance civilization beyond anyone's imagination. Only a very few of you will become scientists and deal directly with the actual development of science in your country, but all of you can direct your own thinking and the thinking of the leaders of your country to use these advancements towards the goodof“ “' Stacteat Sody - 'Jedt-KUitten. - Sfricuy---------- OnqcutuyZUotti. - $dv iU4i t4----- -- 6 -- 7 - 37 - 45 - 56 - 63 I MR. These were James Allderdice, Robert Allderdice, Daniel Archibald, Virginia Bitz, Vernon Biebinger, Carrol Christenson, Alvin Donner, Bernie Ellingson, Jim Fisher, Dick Fisher, Martha Fry, Margie Gasvoda, Joe God- frey, Melvin Hoge, Jerry Jenkins, Arthur Kaiser, Edwin Kaiser, Raymond Kalanick, Virginia Laursen, Ben Lund, Paul Lund, Peter Madison, Wanda Morris, Bruce Petersen, Mavis Petersen, Sandra Rickerd, Jean Schrouder, Robert Scofield, Lowell Svennungsen, Marian Swanson, Jean Tyler, and Gene Welty. We started out the year by electing Peter Madison President of our class. Other officers were Edwin Kaiser, Vice-President; Mavis Petersen, Secretary-Treasurer; and Sandy Rickerd, Student Council Representative. Sandy Rickerd was elected Cheerleader. Our sponsor was Mrs. Lindy Ray. We were initiated the third week of school and held our Freshman Return Party in October. In the fall Virginia Bitz captured the crown of Princess of Homecoming. Our carnival candidates were Bernie Ellingson and Sandy Rickerd. During our Freshman year we lost Vernon Biebinger, Raymond Kalanick, and Paul Lund. 18 When school opened in the fall of '52 we found 29 Sophomores. Class offi- cers were Bernie Ellingson, President; Jerry Jenkins, Vice-President; Peter Madison, Secretary-Treasurer; and Ben Lund, Student Council Representative. Howard Hammond was elected sponsor. Our carnival candidates that year were Melvin Hoge and Margie Gasvoda. In the spring of '53 we gave the Athletic Banquet. This was served by the Sophomore girls and was cooked by Nora's Cafe. Ending our Sophomore year, the girls served at the Junior-Senior Banquet. When we met again as Juniors we missed the face of Virginia Bitz, but found one newcomer. She was Barbara Ophus. We now had thirty eager students. Our officers were Gene Welty, President; Alvin Donner, Vice-President; Jim Fish- er, Secretary-Treasurer; and Bernie Ellingson, Student Council Representative. Mr. Hammond again was chosen class sponsor and Mr. Miley, co-sponsor. Gene Welty and Mavis Petersen were elected carnival candidates. The Junior play, Seventeenth Summer, was presented in December of '53. In May of 1954 we honored the Seniors with a banquet and Prom. Our theme 19 was Gay Paree. Laurence Hoge and Catherine Maxwell were crowned king and queen of the Prom. To end the year, the Juniors in Honor Society ushered for Baccalaureate and Commencement. In the fall of '54, the year long awaited, everyone was together again. Three new students had joined us also; Doris Gullickson, Betty and Bertha Youso. To start the year we elected Barbara Ophus, President; Margie Gasvoda, Vice-President; Alvin Donner, Secretary-Treasurer; and Melvin Hoge, Student Council Representative. Our sponsor was again Mr. Hammond. Mr. Rickerd was our Co-sponsor. In September we welcomed 28 green Freshmen into high school with paddles and onions. Our choice for carnival king and queen were Bruce Petersen and Jean Tyler. In December we had our Senior play, The Groom Said No. This was ano- ther step toward the long awaited day--graduation. At the closing of the first semester we were sorry to lose Martha Fry, Dick Fisher, and Betty and Bertha Youso. As school was drawing to a close, the faces of all the Seniors were missing. Yes, it was Sneak Day. Baccalaureate services were held the Sunday before Commencement. At last the long awaited day was upon us. Some are happy and some sad but Sandy High will long be remembered. 'Heou tyarfa 6.A 'pioHeen Tftayni iceHt OfoeteiGH Professor Ben Lund was a guest of the President of the United States, Gene Welty, for dinner last evening. Professor Lund told the President of his obsession for spearing Sunfish in the Anartic. As yet Jerry doesn't know when he will have another one whittled out. t faact idvice Virginia Laursen is now busy pinning diapers on at Goo Goo's Baby Nursery. She said the best way to get anywhere is to start at the bottom. Joe Godfrey, the alleged bache- lor of Big Sandy High, was married to the Countess of Grasshopper in a remote meadow. When reporters questioned Mr. Godfrey concerning his marriage to the Countess, he said he liked her because she had alot of kick. tteui ScUtai Miss Marjorie Gasvoda and the New York Daily Times sealed a bargain last night which makes Miss Gasvoda head editor. When she was asked how she felt about the agreement, Miss Gasvoda replied that ever since her last year in high school she has had nightmares about being an editor for a big paper. Now her nightmares are reality. Jim Allderdice, well known exca vator, is suffering from a sunburn which he received while digging a ditch. We don't know as yet if the sun was extra strong or if his hat didn’t give enough shade. Ttecv Robert Allderdice, the famous uranium millionaire playboy, has come out with a terrific new inven- tion for himself. He calls it the Geiger Special . It is guaranteed not to run off the road or hit bridges. When Mr. Allderdice was questioned about a car of this kind he said it had been working in his mind since his high school days. Mavis Petersen, New York's most popular model, has decided to travel for awhile. When reporters questioned Miss Petersen concerning her deci- sion, she replied that she wanted to get first hand experiences in the world's famous resorts instead of living vicariously. Magazine covers will certainly miss the beautiful brunette. Although their opponents scored 17 touchdowns, only 4 touchdowns were scored against Coach Hammond's Invincible Eight. Since Class C football com- petition ends with four divisional champs, the Pioneers were un- able to make a bid for a State Title.
