The compiling of a book of this type is a tremendous undertaking. It is not fun. It re- presents many tedious and painstaking hours of work on the part of many. Although it has great current value to the School and to the Public in general, its value to you will become compounded many fold as the years go by. As you move out from School Life into Life's School and journey down life's devious and arduous pathway, you will, in retrospect, come to cherish this volume more and more as time passes. Again may we congratulate your editor, the annual staff and your genial sponsors for this very fine project brought to a very successful conclusion. In closing, may I wish each member of the Class of 1954, health, happiness, and, of course, success in whatever field of endeavor he chooses to pursue. This page sponsored by BIG SANDY MOTORS - - Big Sandy CLASS HISTORY In the fall of 1950, the doors of the school building were opened wide to 29 green freshmen. They were Charlotte Cole, Betty Ann Stevens, Lester Ophus, Doris Matthews, Patty Allderdice, David Archibald, Esther Bahnmiller, Anna Bahnmiller, Marlene Berg, Ronnie Christofferson, Mary Darlington, Nora Darlington, Jerry Eve, Robert Gasvoda, Laurence Hoge, Douglas Giebel, Charlene Lohse, Don Lidstone, Shirley Marty, Cathy Maxwell, Edna Miller, Aaron Pursley, Dennis Reichelt, Raymond Scott, David Tyler, Shirley Trunk, Ida Snow, Roger Williams and Roberta Swanson. This was the first freshmen class to be initiated in the new school building. The class officers for the freshmen were: Cathy Maxwell, president; Charlotte Cole, vice president; Edna Miller, secretary-treasurer; Douglas Giebel, student council representative; and Mrs. Price was our sponsor. We elected Nora Darlington as our cheerleader. We were initiated the second week of school, and our freshman return party was in November. It was held in the Old School assembly. In the fall Betty Stevens captured the crown for Princess at the first Home- coming to be held in Big Sandy. Since our Home Ec class proved to be very good cooks, the girls received the honor of cooking two FFA Banquets that year. For carnival candidates, we chose Mary Darlington and Raymond Scott. At the beginning of the second semester, Henrietta Jennings joined our class, making a total number of thirty students. Ending our freshman year we were sorry to lose Lester Ophus, Betty Stevens, and Charlotte Cole. As roll was called in the fall of '51, we found 30 lively sophomores answering. Carman Nystuen, Linda Hurd, and Alfred Nichols had joined our class. Class officers for that year were president, Don Lidstone; vice president, David Tyler; secretary-treasurer, Doris Matthews; student council representative, Raymond Scott; Mr. Rominger was chosen as our class sponsor. This year was in full swing when we won first prize on our Homecoming float, which was decorated beautifully with pine boughs and covered with roses to welcome the alumni home. During that term we gave square dances to raise money for our coming junior year. Our Carnival candidates for that year were Roger Williams and Shirley Trunk. This page sponsored by HIGHWAY CHEVROLET - - Big Sandy CLASS HISTORY CON’T In the spring of '52, the Athletic Banquet was a huge success, with the help of the class and their mothers. In May of 52, the sophomore girls were called on to serve at the Junior and Senior Prom Banquet, thus ending our sophomore year. As we entered our junior year, stronger and much bolder, we found we had lost Alfred Nichols, but had a new face in our class. It was soon learned that Max Jolicoeur had joined us, making it thirty. Class officers for the coming year were president, Shirley Marty; vice president, Mary Darlington; secretary-treasurer, Roger Williams; student council representative, Doris Matthews; and again we chose Mr. Rominger as our sponsor. Mr. Miley was our co-sponsor. As we were juniors now we had much to accomplish. The play Drums of Death” was presented in the fall. It was this that started our junior year rolling. Nora Darlington and Dennis Reichely were our choice for carnival candidates. Again this year we gave square dances to help raise money for our Prom in May. To say our last farewell and good-by to the Senior class, we honored them at the annual Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. The theme Deep Purple was carried out. Walter Gerson and Grace Diacon were crowned king and queen of the Prom. To bring our junior year to a close, we decorated and ushered at the Baccalaureate and Commencement services. We, thirty, bright-eyed juniors left school feeling that we had had a successful year. When the bells tolled in September '53 and called us in for the year we had long waited for, we readily went forth to make a success of our senior year. Everyone was back in class with the exception of Doris Matthews. Class officers for our senior year were Patty Allderdice, president; Ronnie Christofferson, vice president; Roger Williams, secretary-treasurer; Don Lidstone, student council representative. Mr. Burley was chosen as our sponsor with Mr. Rickerd as co-sponsor. As seniors, we welcomed 34 green freshmen into high school with initiation. Our choice for carnival king and queen, Linda Hurd and Ronnie Christofferson, received the honor of wearing the crowns at the 1953 carnival. This page sponsored by FARMERS UNION ELEVATOR - - Big Sandy CLASS HISTORY CON’T. The Senior play was given in the spring which brought us one step closer to the long awaited day. Then one day a miracle seemed to have happened. The halls were quiet, and no seniors. Yes, it was Sneak Day. Baccalaureate was held on the Sunday before graduation. Now we had reached that final goal we had so long awaited. Some will be happy and others will be sad, but we know what we gained in Big Sandy High School will be long remembered. This page sponsored by KASTES - - Big Sandy PROPHECY May 28, 1975, was destined to be an important date in American history. The air was pierced with a loud screaming noise as the rocket Mayflower, carrying the first colonists to the moon, prepared to take off. The Space Patrol Band played My Sweetheart's the Man in the Moon and the President of the United States, Robert Gasvoda, gave the farewell address. They're ready to take off! Wait! One lone figure is making a mad dash up the rocket's ramp. It’s none other than Linda Hurd--------Late again! As she fastens her safety belt and leans back to relax she lets out a gasp of surprise. Why, Shirley Marty! I haven't seen you since we graduated from Big Sandy High in 1954. What in the world made you decide to come to the moon? Well, Linda, you see it’s this way. I wanted to see the universe and since they need a nurse for this expedition, I volunteered. What are you doing here? I was teaching English in the heart of darkest Africa, but I decided I wanted adventure. As the conversation continued, it switched to the success of their former classmates. Say, Linda, what do you hear of Henrietta Jennings? You two were such pals in high school. From the latest reports, Shirl, I hear she is chief dietitian for the Army and the menu is beans, beans and more beans. She just found another way to fix them which makes the one thousand and first way. A new world record! By the way, you remember Doug Giebel don’t you? Well, he is top director of plays on Broadway. His latest hit is called Scandalous Journey, and you'll never guess who has the leading role. None other than Carman Nystuen! Carman likes to go deep-sea diving in his spare time. Sounds like they are doing all right for themselves. What I can't get over is Robert Gasvoda, better known to us as Gassy, being president of the United States, and Dennis Reichelt being Secretary of Agriculture. I must admit, our class is really doing well for itself. Don't you agree? Yes, I certainly do. Did you know that Aaron Pursley did what he said he would? He is now the richest millionaire in the world, and from what I gather he is making money hand over fist. This page sponsored by COCA -COLA BOTTLING CO. — Havre CLASS PROPHECY CON’T. There's also a new corporation called the Dry-Land Farmers. David Archibald is President. Ronald Christofferson, Swede to us, David Tyler and Jerry Eve also belong to it. They are really making it a success. Remember Edna Miller? She has become a very successful interior decora- tor. In fact she has just refinished the White House. Then there's Mary Ellen Darlington. She has become a leading beautician in Hollywood. At the present she is employed by Raymond Scott, who is owner of Scott's Motion Picture Studios. Ray has just invented 4-D. Patty Allderdice also works at the Studios as Scott's personal telephone operator. Mary's sister, Nora, is the leading model at the Streamline Modeling Company. She has just modeled a page of space suits in last month's Vogue. She has really made a name for herself. The next step for her is Hollywood, so I hear. Don Lidstone hasn’t been doing so badly either. With his personality he has quite a following of fans and is often called Will Rogers the Second. At the present time he is starring in the story of his life — The Don Lidstone Story, soon to be released by Scott’s Studios. Laurence Hoge is also down in California but for a different purpose. He plays professional football with the LOS ANGLES RAMS, and has won the title of All-American. Ida Snow and Cathy Maxwell are making news with their wonderful Doctor and Nurse team at Rochester. They have just found a serum that will cure almost all diseases. Shirley Trunk is their labratory technician and is doing a wonderful job of helping them. Linda, have you been watching T.V. lately? Marlene Berg is on the Betty Crocker Program and demonstrates cooking. Charlene Lohse has set a new record. She is the fastest brick-layer in the world, and with the help of all her little brick-layers she is trying to do even better. My, Shirley, but our class has really done wonders! Roger Williams owns the biggest Dude Ranch in America. It's right in the Bear Paw Mountains, and I hear all the famous people go there. Why even the Queen of England spent her vacation there this summer! Roger isn't the only one still around Montana. Max Jolicoeur is right in Big Sandy and is Superintendent of Schools there. This page sponsored by PATTERSONS - - Havre CLASS PROPHECY CON’T. Remember the Bahnmiller sisters? They also have done a wonderful job. Esther is the new Secretary to the United Nations, and she has really been busy. Meanwhile Anna has done a wonderful job of teaching and has just been nominated Teacher of the Year. Roberta Swanson is also a teacher. She has been appointed Dean of Home Economics in the college at Bozeman. As the rocket slowly starts to land on the moon and the two former class- mates start to fasten their safety belts, they cease looking at the past and the wonderful times they had in Big Sandy High School and look into an exciting future. This page sponsored by GRAND UNION - - Fort Benton POEM In the fall of 1950 The doors were open wide; And thirty bashful freshmen Coyly stepped inside. They peered around the corner, And what should meet their stare. But all the mighty seniors With paddles, waiting there. With initiation over And the greenness fading fast. An appropriate return party Proved to be the first big task. In 1951 you heard The slamming of the doors, And we progressed quite rapidly As magnanimous sophomores. Emily Post had helped us With her book of etiquette, And we put on, for the athletes. An exquisite banquet. Drums of Death, in our junior year Was the big hit of the day. This exciting mystery, full of fear. Was our memorable Junior Play. Winding up our junior year It then became our scheme To keep our prom name secret— Deep Purple was our theme. Now we, the mighty seniors. Wish to express appreciation To our parents and our teachers. For the Key to Education. --Nora Darlington Ida Snow This page sponsored by C L - - Big Sandy CLASS WILL I, Patricia Allderdice, will my ability to get A's to my brothers.
