Text from Pages 1 - 60 of the 1953 volume:

Dedication Our days in Big Sandy High School have been made brighter, happier, and much more fun, because of the understanding, good humor, and kindness, of Mr. F. E. Miley, who has been on the teaching staff for twenty-six years and has been principal most of the time. Therefore we lovingly dedicate this edition of the PIONEER to him. This page is sponsored by the 706 AUTO ELECTRIC and PATTEN’S FURNITURE and APPLIANCE STORE, INC. , Havre, Montana Class of 1953 MOTTO: FLOWER: COLOR: VALEDICTORIAN: Walter Gerson SALUTATORIAN: Patty Pokorny Not finished; just begun. Red Rose Green and White Walter Gerson Message Again we approach the time of year when the grass grows green, the stu- dents become romantic, the faculty gets rheumatic and young man's fancy lightly turns to. . . track and outdoor baseball. At this season we. The Green Thumpers, traditionally transplant another crop of boys and girls from School Life into Life's School. It is a hectic world into which they are set out; however, they are well equipped to take their respective places in this unstable, chaotic period and carry on. One is reminded of the small boy in the geography class upon whom the teacher called to recite on the shape of the earth. He did. He also stayed after school. We dare not, here, if ever, use that four letter word, but hope that our graduates and those of the many, many other schools in our Country, and in the other free-thinking countries as well, shall find a way to lift our democratic and free-enterprise civilization from the Realm of Satan to which the boy referred. All we ask or expect is that each of our Seniors goes out, takes his place in whatever field of endeavor he chooses to pursue, and does his best to make our World and our America a better and a safer place in which to live. Seniors, if we of the Staff have at times seemed arbitrary, dictatorial, ultra-cautious or over-vigilant, we humbly beg forgiveness. What has been done has been done with one and only one objective in mind--that of making it easier for you to make the transition from the status of children to that of full-fledged members of an adult society. In a society usually businesslike, often cold, and at times relentless, you must soon take your respective stations, carry the ball, and finish the game. One by one those other players on the evening side of the hill will go out on fouls, retire from the field, occupy the benches, and gradually fade away. Then it will be your assignment to take over, reverse the score and show Coach Joe, Georgi, or whoever be it at the time, the members of his awful team, and the rules and win. This you will do unaided, unguided and unbossed. So live, that when that grim Last Scorer comes to carve beneath your name. He shall not note the points you made, but how you Played the Game.
