Victory Belle. She helped sell $4000 worth of War Bonds at the Victory Night Carnival. The Minute Man flag flying under Old Glory means that at least 90% of the Big Sandy students are buying war stamps regularly. Stamps are sold in a booth at school each Wednesday. What happens to school teachers. Big Sandy's vocational-agri- culture instructor is now a lieutenant (J. G.) in the U. S. Navy serving as a gunnery instructor. A six by six army truck parked out- side the Community Hall signifies that from two to twenty soldiers from the detachment stationed here are inside en- joying the recreational and shower fa- cilities of the high school gymnasium. A cold winter morning, but the BSHS band is at the depot playing for the Big Sandy boys leaving to join the armed forces. High School students Aid class must actually strate their skill. During the winter a First Aid course for adults was given. Even in the elementary school the art of bandaging is taught. in First demon- Only a dog house built in Junior High Shop class, but many of the construction skills learned thereby can be applied to larger buildings. Some of the boys enrolled in Aeronautics class may be in the Air Corps by now. This young man is taking a practical course in Radio Set Servicing. Physical education classes are conducted both in the gymnasium and on the athletic fields. Games such as tennis, softball, and boxing are empha- sized, as well as cales- thenics. In response to wartime demands, physical education classes were avail- able to both boys and girls in Junior and Senior High School. Interscholastic athletic competition is still an important part of the physical fitness program at Big Sandy. During the football season, the Pioneers lost only one game out of the five played and was the top team in the Judith Basin Division in percentage of games won. St. Mary's, winner of Hi-Line Division, came from behind to tie the Pioneers 22-22 in a game early in the season. In basketball, the defeats of the strong Harlem and Chinook team, plus the Pioneer advancement to the championship game in two tournaments, were the high points of the season. During wartime periods, when housing fa- cilities are congested, and transportation difficult to obtain, the Big Sandy dormitories are more necessary to the district than ever before. The 50-piece Big Sandy High School Band assumed many wartime duties this year. Some of these, such as playing at the depot for selectees, and ad- vertising the school scrap drive are shown on other pages. The usual skilled instruction for members and high calibre performance was maintained, however, the rendition of Bee- thoven's Fifth Symphony and Schubert's Unfinished Sym- phony was outstanding. These sophomore girls are modeling dresses and suits they made as a project in a high school Home Economics class. Nursery School. The Junior High Home Economics Class received training in car- ing lor pre-school children. Operation of the mimeograph in the Commercial Department. Train- ing in the use of various office ma- chines as well as Shorthand and Bookkeeping is given here. r flint im Art correlated with Health and Social Science in the 3rd Grade. The silhouettes in the back- ground were all made by 4th and 5th grade students. Did you know that Big Sandy is closer to Tokyo than Los Angeles is? New facts in 6th grade geography brought out by the war. F 6251 was the number of pennies col- lected by Big Sandy students in a drive to bring these coins back into circula- tion due to the shortage of copper. The jars shown are all full. Every noon from the Community Hall kitchen from 60-90 hungry children are served a com- plete meal at the School Lunch Project. This is a health project subsidized by the federal gov- ernment. Last fall Big Sandy school sponsored one of the most suc- cessful scrap drives in Mon- tana. As a result of this cam- paign, over 100,000 pounds of scrap, rubber, iron, and other metals was collected. Nearly $500 in war stamps was dis- tributed to the students from the sale of this scrap. The high school band aided in the pub- licity preceding the opening of the campaign. In total amount collected, Big Sandy ranked third in the state among all schools, regardless of size.
