2 B, P, H, S. BASKETBALL SQUAD 1954-55 TO THE MEMBERS OF THE PEP CLUB: On behalf of the boys in athletics and myself, I wish to ex- press our appreciation for your loyal support during this season and the wonderful meals served after the game. You have set a high standard of sportsmanship and hospitality that is spreading over the State of Wyoming. TO THE MEMBERS OF THE ATHLETIC TEAMS: It has been an enjoyable experience working with you this season. You have represented the school to the best of your ability, which is all one could ask. It has been my desire to teach not only the fundamentals necessary to win, but to motivate certain desir- able traits of citizenship which athletics can give. Athletics teaches a boy in his formative years to con- trol and command his own powers, to mobilize them quickly and completely toward a common goal, It teaches one to disregard pain and risk in pursuit of a desired end, to subordinate his interests to those of a group. lt teaches him to call up and expend in an emergency his last reserve of strength and courage, to observe the rules of the game, to regard the rights of others, and stay within the limits dictated by de'- cency and sportsmanship. Athletics not only teaches a boy the will to win, but how to meet defeat, When he is defeated, what is his attitude: Does he curl up and quit? Does he whine? Does he attack the sportsmanship and ability of the officials or opponetm? Or does he face the world with head held high and clear eyes of self respect, rejoicing in the idea, I did my best. I am often reminded of a brave old Scot wounded in battle: Fight on, my men, Sir Andrew said, A little l'm hurt, but yet not slain, l'll just lie down and bleed a little, And then l'll rise and fight again. This association, it seems to me, helps turn a young man toward a good and useful citizenship. It is my desire to see more of Big Piney's student body participating in these two worthwhile organiz- ations. 0 g Q Z
