Nick is probably the most unique exchange student we’ve had, because instead of sharing just one culture with us, he brought two. Niclas is Swedish, but lives in Spain. He speaks Spanish, Swedish, and English fluently, and is also learning French. (And you thought that last test in German class was hard!) Nick's favorite classes at BLHS included Economics, French II, Com- puter Aided Drafting, and Art 3D. He joined the ski club, which he enjoyed a lot, and says, I only wish we would have more time to enjoy skiing.” Other favorite activities included hunting, fishing, anything to do with outdoor life, and just hanging out with friends. In Spain and Sweden, life for Niclas is a little different. He goes out for such sports as swimming, soccer, and volleyball. And as far as hanging out with friends, over there they usually go out to discotcques or other places for teenagers. But being an exchange student is not all easy. At first, it’s hard to talk to people because you are afraid of saying something wrong. But Nick quickly opened up to people, and took on new terms easily (ex.: awe- some). And it didn't matter that it took a while for him to learn to say “chipmunk. (You had to be in his Art 3D class to really understand.) We will all miss Niclas, but we won't say goodbye. Let’s just say, “See ya when you come back for a visit!” 10 — Leslie Woolston Jason Blonigen Dianc Boekc Wcsley Borchardt Shelia Brandi Corrina Burma Kristin Adams Scan Allen Eric Anthony Jim Berthiaumc Bill Biclcfeldt II Sara Lagcson Todd Lambert Samantha Lappert Janet Larson Pcrccy Lumley Michelle Lundholm Louis Marcil Marci Mast Jennifer McGarvey Chuck Miller Jodi Parpart Jesse Peck Kevin Peterson Shawn Peterson Jesse Pctrowski Tracy Powell Scott Ricbel Dec Rohde Wendy Rose Jeff Ruhoff I 13 Rob Sanders Robert Schippcr Mark Schucllcr Linda Schwcgcl Tammy Sens Mailei Smith Jeff Slang Brian Struffert Dorothy Sullivan Dana Syverson Jamey Thomas Kathleen Tully The Dude Uberg Rachel VanAllen Chad VanderVenter Laura Vogt Thomas Wheeler Bob Wool house Leslie Woolston Dustin Wright Not Pictured: Michael Faust Tina Gcronsin Jean Konchal Cynthia Larson Brittany McKinney Stacey Rhude Neal Simoneau 'Oj crb yiC4 Jenny Abbas Ryan Asplund Joe Backlund Kevin Barager Erika Berg Deidra Bcutlcr Becky Biasing Kim Bottema Sherrie Bradley Chad Brenteson 15 Lucrezia Conigliaro Diane Dahlbcrg Andrea Deuel Dcbbe Deyo Dionne Dickinson Carole Forsberg Carey Gallus Ginger Gammclgaard Chad Gorackc Wayne Hanson Erin Henderson LcAnn Hensel Becky Hiller Wendy Hunter Nikki Jackson Tina Jacobsen Chris Jaskowiak Jctia Jcskcb 16 Geri Johnson Nick Johnson Matt Juhl Missy Juhl Chris Kelly Jennifer Koester Ray Kopponen Sherrie Lermer Jennifer Lloyd Jodi Locchler Amey Metzger Mitch Mitchell Deanna Moshicr Wendi Nali Melanie Norland Squeezer Owen Cindy Patzoldt Shawn Peek Scan Peters Paul Petersen 17 Eric Peterson Pat Polsfuss Tina Poselcy Jim Ranailo Susan Ropunski Matt Rasmussen Vickie Ricbcl Tim Roff Teena Rossin Lynn Ruhoff Mike Skoog Shannon Swanson Kelly White Dale Woljok Christa Wolff Ken Zaske John Zimmerman Not Pictured: Lila Gaulkc Kari Nordly Jason Skoog Kara Thiel 18 Shannon Abram Elfina Alongi Jamison Anderson Gary Angell Mall Aschnewitz Natalie Battin Adam Benker Amy Bergstrom Robert Bergstrom Brenda Bernard Owen Bcrndt Heather Bcrning Heather Berry Jeff Bialka Nedlcy Birkholz Sarah Booth Joel Carlson Andrea Curtis 19 Chad Donncr Ray Driscoll Melissa Fenncma Jennifer Frank Charity Fretty Joe Gorackc Jason Goth Pamela Grady Michelle Hachn Carrie Hansen Rob Hesley Wendy Hesley Kevin Holland Leila Hoss Wayne Howe Tony Jacobsen Travis Jacobsen Charlene Jerrid Steve Kjellbcrg Kristine Kline Janet Kollar Tresa Kroger Kim Langer Rob Lutzke Charina Manion Connie McConnell Justin McGarvey Ryan McMullen Chris Michlitsch Bridget! The Hornets were determined to come up the winners in that match due to the fact that last year in the 2nd round of Districts, Sartell beat them out. Deter- mined they were—winning it in 4 games! In many ways, the ups and downs of the season mirrored the contrast of the weather. We progressed from a lightly regarded team to one that opened eyes around the conference and regained respect. This is a tribute to the players who banned together and brought Big Lake Football the desire to excell. The seniors of ’87 each contributed to the success of the team in their own unique way. Troy Teige and Tim Gallus gar- nared All-Conference honors and were two mainstays. Dan Bengston was a leader and an excellent 2-way player who lent cohesivencss and solid play to our team. Bill Mauer came out for varsity football for the first time and was an inspira- tion to the team as demonstrated by his willingness to do whatever asked to help the team progress. We will miss these fine young men next year. Dan lakes a trip! ! 3fe0.i J44- 75'VV Say Cheese ... As a team we broke a losing streak of 26 games and were 3 points from a 4 and 4 season. Five dedicated girls—Shannon, Jill, Mickey, Jen- ny, and Holly—had the neat experience of going to cheerleading camp. They came back full of new ideas and enthusiasm. Because of a new Minnesota State High School League ruling, we were no longer allowed to do our impressive, high pyramids. Instead of giving in to this frustration, Becky Jacobsen, a cheer- leader who graduated in '87. put together a new school song routine. iilliiii. W M JUNIOR VARSITY: Bottom-Thc Hornet. Advisor: Mrs. Beth Smith 34 Homecoming A record breaking event The EVW Big Lake football game was the climax to an exciting homecoming week. The Hornets, under new coach John Haskell, put the losing streak into the past with a 18 to 10 win over the Eagles. Monday was Dress-up day. The Juniors won the window painting contest of the local businesses. Monday evening King Larry and Queen Michelle were crowned. Tuesday was Generic day—everyone dressed in black and white, and the Ju- niors again won the Powder Puff football game. Wednesday was Theme day, where each class had a different theme to dress up as. During activity hour, slaves Ken, Mark, and Patty were sold. Thursday was Backwards day. Friday was the tradition- al Blue and Gold day. Carnations were sold in the morning and during lunch. There was a pepfest in the afternoon to get ready for the game. Friday night’s game was cancelled because the refs didn't show up. The dance, with music by “Distraction, was held in the commons from 8 to 11 P.M. The next night our very own varsity football squad defeated EVW with our first win of the season. —Jenny Abbas Ken entertains with a puppet show. Sophs show their artistic ability and spirit. This year we’ve added a new section to our Laker. As you know, the purpose of a yearbook is to gather together the special memories of the year However, the school day is JUST 6 hours and 45 minutes long, which leaves 17 hours and 15 minutes to create memories. Multiply that to the 177 some days of the school year and that’s 3,055 hours and 15 minutes not to mention weekends and holidays. That adds up to a lot of memories you shouldn’t miss seeing in your yearbook, and that is why we arc introducing the Student Life Mini-Mag. It records our firsts, our favorites, our fads and fashions, and all our special days that make up the memories to which we should “Never Say Goodbye.” Shelia and Matt show their spirits and appetites! “Veann, show us those bedroom eyes. The Big Date Way back, long ago. when we were all little, we’d play house with the sitter and of course, w e always pretended we were grown up or at least in high school. We looked forward to it because we thought we would all turn into a bunch of Ken and Barbie’s (or Shelia’s—sorry. 1 couldn’t resist)!!! We would all be good-looking, smart, popular, rich and, most of all. have dates every night of the week. Well, most of us are older and more mature now. hopefully, and we realize no one is perfect, but some of us (82 %) do have the privilege of dating That lucky age when Mom and Dad said Okay came at different times. Forty-seven % of us received the honor when we turned sweet sixteen. Thirty-four % could go out when we came upon the golden age of fifteen. Other ages include 14 (10%). 13 (4%). 12 (2%), and a few people who have to wait until they’re 17 (3%). A typical date for the student here at BLHS includes, first of all. the guy doing the hard part—the asking. He docs this by asking in person. If the girl accepts, the two head to the local theatre, afterwards they go out to cat. The end of this special night comes at I2:00-midnight. the hour of the dreaded curfew. On his way home, after dropping his date off, the guy realizes he has spent S 20.00 and is broke. Oh well, the memories are worth it. Jeff demonstrates a common post-date dilemma. The clock strikes twelve, arc you home?! A quiet stroll down lover’s lane. The dating place 56 On the Job Dairy Queen As we all know, to have fun usually takes money. Okay. okay. 1 know, the best things in life are free, but there are (just) a few things that we need money to do. And just how do students at BI.HS get this money? Well, some of us arc fortunate, we have kind, generous parents who give us all the money we need. The rest of us. 67 %, have to .. . (UGH!). . WORK” The majority work at restaurants, but a few have more unusual jobs such as working at a nursing home or as a maid. The average salary of the working BI.HS student is S 3.42 hour for 20-25 hours a week. And then, they have money to buy clothes and of course, have fun — however that may be. The members of the choirs worked very hard to prepare for the various performances during the year. In addition to the regularly scheduled fall, winter, and spring concerts, the Sr. High Choir also performed a Holiday program at Brookdale Mall during the Christmas Season and took part in the Elk River Choir Festival in March. Members of the Sr. High Choir also participated in Solo Enscmble contests at both the District level held at Sartell High School and at the state level held at the College of St. Benedict’s. Out of seven entries, Big Lake received six district stars which advanced to the state contest. In addition to the solo and ensemble entries, the BLHS Jazz Choir- —“Vocal Jazz”—performed at both the district and state levels. The Senior High Choir received top honors at large group contest held at Sauk Rapids High School. The choir received a Division I state rating from each of the three judges for the contest. This is the highest rating possible. The year wound down with a spring choir tour to three neighboring schools and fine performances at the Spring Arts Fair and at Graduation ceremonies. This year was a very successful one with special thanks going to Gina Johnson, who put many hours of hard work and dedication into the choir program by contributing her wonderful keyboard skills. —Tim Gallus, choir president Accompanist - Gina Johnson SR. The doctor (Teena Rosin), tried to convince the main character Fred (Chris Peterson) that his family was dead. The Importance of Being Earnest,” was a comedy in which two friends. Jack and Algernon, seek romance and get into serious scrapes. You see. Jack is known by the name Ernest (an invented brother) to Algernon's cousin Gwendolen, who he falls in love with. On the other hand, Algernon introduces himself to Jack's ward Cecily as Jack's brother Ernest, and they fall in love. When Cecily and Gwendolen meet, confusion arises as to who is engaged to whom. This confusion, along with quips, insults, and plays on words by cast members, kept the audience in high spirits throughout the play. Speech - A Team of Positive People Now let's get something straight, right now. The '88 Speech Team was awe- some!!! For starters, we had 43 team members, which was an accomplishment in itself. These talented speakers went on to win not one ... not two ... but six speech team trophies for Big Lake! Which. I might add, isn't too shabby for a team that had never won any team tro- phies. These included two 3rd place tro- phies from Little Falls and St. Johns, a 2nd from our own invitational, a 1st from our 1st meet of the season at Swanvillc, and did you know we were the CMC Con- ference champs and the District 19 run- ner-ups? And, if I put down all of the individual medals, trophies, ribbons, etc., it would fill up the entire yearbook. (Sor- ry Shelly M„ Shelly G., Haley, Andrea, The thrill of victory Shelia, Veann, Joy, and well, everyone.) Now, I know there are a few people out there who still believe some old myths like “babies come from the stork” and “speech is boring. Sorry to break it to ya, but you're wrong! A typical speech meet might go something like this: Wake up at some ungodly hour on a Saturday morn- ing anywhere from 4:30 AM (remember THAT one?) to 6:30 AM. Then get ready and meet the bus at the school.” Dur- ing the ride to the unknown, a few people practice their speeches and the rest of us jam to the tunes (courtesy of Shannon, of course). When we arrive at our destina- tion, we file out and get our codes, which are nice at the beginning, but by the end of the season, you start memorizing speeches (“Don't you trust me? .. . Consider the Cosmos ) and who to watch out for. (1 won't say it, Leslie.) Then we find our rooms and give our speeches to not 10 million people but about six. Oh yea, and the judge. After three rounds, we eat and chat with our new friends until finals are posted. If and when we make finals, we perform again, this time it is about 10 million people. Next, we pig out some more and wait for the judge to figure out the results. We finally file into the auditorium and hope for the best. All in all, it makes for a good day. So remember, “Speech Says It All!!!” —Jenny Abbas ‘‘Is this really for me?” Sec all the awesome people ya meet in speech'1 Shelia explains the finer points of speech. 68 ’88 SPEECH TEAM Positivc People Row I: Heide Scllhauscn .
