Dedication When J.M. Fiskum talks ... The class of 1984 and the annual staff would like to dedicate this year’s Laker to Mr. James Fiskum. Mr. Fiskum has taught at Big Lake High School for three years and has been a defi- nite plus to the Music Department. Not only docs he teach music but he also brings the music out of his students. He sees the potential and the talent of the students and helps them bring it out and share it with others. Thanks Mr. Fiskum for being a great teacher and a great guy. 2 NOBODY listens! The week began with Monday being dress-up day, buttons were sold, and the Mr. and Miss Hush Contest got underway. Dur- ing Monday evening's coronation, Angie Brown and Tony Woolhouse were crowned reigning queen and king. Coronation was preceded by a traditional early volleyball game with Elk River. Tuesday's dress code was comprised of punk rockers and valley girls and guys. Our volleyball team had another game, this time at Edcn-Valley Watkins. Each class dressed a special way on Wednesday, the student-faculty volleyball games w ere held and slaves were sold. A volleyball game against Rockford on Thursday helped top off hat jerscy day. This year hat jersey day had a new flair, special hats showing Big Lake spirit were sold to those wishing to have one. Also on Thursday, the hard-working slaves carried out the duties assigned to each by their owners. The week was concluded on Friday with the dress being traditional blue gold. carnations were sold, and a pepfest to get everyone fired up for the game was held. At the pepfest, the juniors were judged to have made the best poster and the win- ners in the Mr. and Miss Hush contest were an- nounced. Later in the evening Eden-Valley Wat- kins arrived to face our Hornets and the tradi- tional dance followed the game. One word describing Homecoming 1983 .. . TERRIFIC!! 10 Sno-Daze 1984 began on Monday with dress-up and boys' hush day. Coronation followed that evening at the girls' basketball game which was a stunning victory over St. John's Prep. Tuesday was jersey and girls' hush day with a pepfest for the boys' game against Becker. The class bas- ketball games and slave auctions were held on Wednesday. The slaves ‘hon- ored their masters on class day, Thursday. Friday was scheduled to be blue and gold day with a boys' game at Kimball to be followed by a dance. School on Friday was cancelled, how- ever. due to heavy fog so the game was played on the following Satur- day. Carnation sales were put off to Tuesday ‘Valentines Day' and the Sno-Daze Dance was rescheduled as a spring activity. s D n a 0 z — e Sno-Da e Candidales: I. Judging from her letters and pictures, the nickname Sunshine seemed very appropriate. With the delightful Skane accent of southern Sweden our new daughter arrived, very diminutive in stature but beaming and obviously determined to become an American for nine months. It wasn't too long before we concluded that all Swedish girls play the piano, sing, knit, ski, eat vegetables (spinach even!) and are punctual. New taste treats were granola, jello and picnic beans. Granola scored high; the other were crossed off as inedible. School in the fall shaped up immediately with all classes in her second language, danceline and volleyball. By winter she was finishing her breakfast tea, sliding down the hill to the bus with her banana and wondering (with the rest of us) if it would ever stop snowing. With her gymnastics background. Gisela tried out for basketball cheerleading. This was one of her greatest school experiences. There are no ''sheerleaders in Sweden. She loved to meet new people and visit new places. Often she would remark: “I should be a physical therapist — when I’m old — but first I must travel around the world!” We hope that Big Lake is on the list, because we shall miss our Swcdish-American daughter. —Kaydi Larson, Gisela’s American Mom Kaan Tannik Arnulfo Avelar Short stay” exchange students to Big Lake this year were Kaan Tanik who came to us from Turkey and Arnulfo Avelar who was from El Salvador. Kaan was in Big Lake from Septem- ber 23 to February 27 and lived with Cathy Corridino and Don Monson. Arnulfo was here from November 21st to January 24th and lived with Mr. and Mrs. Carey Moschkau. The new squad consisted entirely of freshmen. The varsity football squad was led by seniors: Deb Bebo and Ann Sularz. Some new faces to the squad this year were: Lynn McGowan, Terri Lynas, Kim Juhl and Cheri Coyle. The ju- nior varsity squad had the experience of Becky Jacobsen, Lisa Johnson, and Teri McGowan. Both squads cheered through every game, rain or shine. Middle Right: Varsity Cheerleaders. Clock- wise starting at top: Cheri Coyle. Terri Lynas. Kim Juhl. Deb Bebo. Lynn McGowan, Ann Sularz. Most of the year was spent on routines for half-time perfor- mances at football and basketball games. Be- sides these performances, the Lakettes com- peted in the Aquatcnnial Pepsi-Cola Invita- tional. This was the first time for competition and Big Lake proudly placed 4th. Also the girls spent most of their spring practicing for an elementary performance that they put on in May. The elementary stu- dents and teachers participated in the pro- gram and it was a fun way to end the year. Varsity Football, Row 1,1 tor: Bob Moraflca, MGR.; Doug Muir, Steve Gruber, Tom Baird. Football The 1983 Hornet Football Team proved to be a solid team, one to be reckoned with in the Central Minnesota Conference. Jump- ing off to a 4-0 record, the Hornets showed good balance on of- fense; rushing and passing equally well. The offensive line of Mitchell, Woolhouse, Gallus, Baird and Gruber, plus the blocking of fullback Dan Borchardt enabled Lane Beier to rush for 646 yards including an 80 yard run against Holdingford. Quarterback Rob Aasen had an excellent season passing for 701 yards to Paul Stein, Doug Muir and Bill Wilts mainly. Before being sidelined by an injury Stein was the leading receiver in the St. Cloud area and was chosen to the WCCO All State Team of the Week. Aasen led the team on the offensive point chart with 175. Defensively the team improved a lot from the previous season. Leading the team on the defensive point charts were Wilts (238) Baird (238) and Woolhouse (237). The season's most exciting game was a come-from-behind Homecoming victory over Eden Valley-Watkins: 20-14. Special recognition goes to Steve Gruber who was selected First Team All-Conference and Paul Stein who was selected to the Second All-Conference Team. 24 Above l eft. J V Football. Volleyball The Big Lake Hornets placed fourth in the conference at the end of the Volleyball Season. Besides doing quite well in the conference, they also shined at the Sartell Invitational and at Dis- trict Play-offs. At the Sartell Invitational, Big Lake became a real threat rather than just a statistic. The Hor- net team just missed playing for a third place trophy. On the District level. Big Lake made it through the Quarter and Semi-Finals, just miss- ing the Final game by a few points. (A very good team effort shown by a team that wasn’t seeded very high.) Individual All-Conference honors went to Rhonda Danzl and Nancy Aschnewitz. Second Team honors went to Diane Bower and Sheryl Struffert. Thus, all three Big Lake Seniors were honored by making one of the selections. Varsity Volleyball. I to r: Sheryl Struffert, Linda Gramsey. Rhonda Danzl. Deb Asplund. That goal was realized when Big Lake High School was awarded the District 19 Sportsmanship Award for 1983-84. This award, sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League, is presented annually to the school which demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship within their district. Congratulations to everyone who played a part in promot- ing sportsmanship and thus making this reward a reality — coaches, advisors, teachers, players, cheerleaders, fans, band, vocal music, and speech and drama departments. Special Thanks to: The Big Lake Fans, Below: Outstanding student and faculty promoters of the Sportsmanship Award. Winter Cheerleaders The varsity basketball squad was led by the experience of Captain Diane Bower. Other veterans to the BLHS cheerleading squads were: seniors Janie Bouley, Ann Su- larz and Debi Bebo; junior Diane Alcott; and sophomore Lynn McGowan. The junior varsity had experience from Captain Becky Jacobsen, Lisa Johnson, Kari Lange and Tcri McGowan. This year also saw a junior high squad led by Captains Sally Nocton and Vestisha Henderson. The basketball squads also had the treat of having our foreign exchange student, Gisela Bohlin, make the varsity squad. Cheerleading is a sport not practiced in Gisela's home country of Sweden. Wrestling It was a season that dawned with high team expectations. With a number of returning quality wrestlers, experienced depth, and enthusiasm we expected to do very well as a team. It was not to be ... due to injuries, illness, and academic problems. Our team was competitive in most of the meets but nine out of eleven times we came up short. This does not detract from the individual success many of our wrestlers enjoyed. We placed three people on the 2nd team All-Conference Squad: Doug Muir, 185-167 lbs.; Russ Lumley, 138-132 lbs.; and Tim Juhl, 155-145 lbs. Many individuals placed in the top six at several tournaments through the year. Leading this list was Steve Gruber with one first and three seconds; Doug Muir with one first, one second, two thirds, and a sixth at Regions; Tim Juhl with one first, and one fourth; and Ken Boenish with one second, one third and one fourth. Four wrestlers advanced to the Region Tour- nament, which matches our all time high: the four being Ken Boenish. Russ Lumley, Doug Muir and Steve Gruber. Big Lake Wrestling will be entering a co-sponsorship of the sport with Becker next year. This promises to infuse added vitality to both programs. This is an exciting change that the coaches are looking forward to. We see the change producing many positive effects and from two struggling programs we hope to build one very competitive program. 30 Varsity Gymnastics. Row I. I to r: Missy tamcy. This year they did not have to share the title ... they earned it outright, by themselves!! The HORNET GYMNASTS were undefeated in the conference. Besides winning the Conference Trophy they also brought home the second place Sub-Region Trophy. This was the first year that Big Lake advanced to Regions as a team, as well as with Individuals. Six of the eight member team made team honors: All-Conference included Captain Missy Earney, eighth grader Patty Aschnewitz and seventh grader Jami Anderson. Second Team was Jill Sularz, Kathy Meyer and Kori Monson. At the State Level, Big Lake had Jami Anderson placing in four events and earning second in the All-Around Competition. Since there is one junior on the team, with the remainder being 9th grade on down ... Big Lake looks to a bright future. B Squad Gymnastics. Row I. I to r: Jill Gramscy, Linda Johnson. Boys Basketball The 1983-84 Boys Basketball season was one of excitement, tri- umphs, hard work, intensity, inconsistency, upsets, sportsmanship, and heart breaking losses. Inconsistency would have to be listed as a problem this team suffered from; and intensity, at times, as one of their strengths. There were many highlights in our 11 win 10 loss season, and at times this team played like a State Tournament team. The overtime win at St. Michael started it all, and the Crosby Tournament will always be remembered; and not just because of our second place finish. The victories at EVW and Sartell will be recorded as firsts. Beating Holdingford had to be one of our best games and it turned out to be a win over a team that beat St. Johns (a team that went on to the State Tournament) twice. Probably the accomplishment that should be talked about most is the sportsmanship which this team played all year. Much of the credit should go to our three senior captains: Paul Stein. Rob Aasen and Troy Brenteson. Their intensity and hard work set the pace for the rest of the team. Special congratulations to Paul Stein and Brad Hayes who were chosen 1st team All-Conference and Rob Aasen 2nd team. 34 Junior Varsity: Row 1: Bob Moraflca. David Biasing, Mike Stein. The season began with the at- tending of a Speech Clinic at St. Cloud Apollo by prospective team members. After a prac- tice period the team set out to hold on to the reputation they had built for themselves the previous year. Mr. Jim Roussin, head coach, and Doug Larson, his assistant, took the team to invitational meets at St. Cloud Cathedral, Little Falls, Monticello and St. Cloud State University. The true competitions began with Conferences at Eden Valley-Watkins and Dis- tricts at Sartell soon after. Four team mem- bers won the right to continue to Region Com- petition. No one from Big Lake, though, ad- vanced to State Competition. The team, even with the loss of three lettered seniors (Larson, Sularz and Springer), looks for continued suc- cess in its future under the guidance of Coach Roussin. It consisted of two sophomores, two freshmen and ten seventh and eighth graders. Though young it was an energetic dedicated group of athletes who were determined to do their best. Their success at the varsity level was sporadic as they gave too much away in age, physical maturity and exper- ience. As a team they shined at the junior high meets where they never failed to do well. In six junior high meets they never placed lower than third. 54 Boys Track Varsity Track: Row 1,1 to r: Jim Halverson, Danny Hansmann, Doug Muir. Phil Kollar, Chris Zamorano. Row 2: Coach Muir. Despite these problems, the Boys Track Team experienced another successful sea- son. Overall the number of participants was down some- what, but the quality was high. Senior Captain Doug Muir led the team by winning the school's Decathalon. He also set a new school record in the Two Mile Run with a time of 10:58. Junior Phil Kollar was tops in points scored in every meet during the season. Phil was conference champion at the indoor conference meet in the High Hurdles, 55 Meter Dash and Long Jumps. Phil also won the conference outdoor High Hur- dles. The 400 Meter Relay Team of Bret Olson, Mark Gabrielson, Chris Zamorano and Phil Kollar constantly placed high in meets and the Sprint Medley Relay Team of Zamorano, Kollar, Olson, Muir and alternate Tim Juhl took second place in the District and placed 5th in the Region 5A Meet. Freshman Dan Hansmann won the Ju- nior High Decathalon for the second year in a row. 56 Junior High Track. Row 1,1 to r: Thad Teige, Joe Springsteen, Jim Berth- iaumc. Joe Faust. Big Lake High School had two teams of students com- pete in the First Annual Central Minnesota College Education Cooperative Ser- vice Unit Knowlege Bowl on April 6, 1984 at Atwood Center, St. Cloud State Uni- versity. There were 14 teams from other schools in our area which participated. The Knowledge Bowl competi- tions provided students with an opportunity to exercise their minds on over 250 diffi- cult questions which covered a wide range of academic subjects. After returning from the Knowledge Bowl, students who participated were asked to comment on their exper- ience. Comments included: It was a chance to utilize all I've worked for in school;’’ — Not only does the Bowl pro- vide knowledge, but it also provides something for the high academic students to get involved with and have fun at it;” — I think it is way past time an academic competition became an ex- tracurricular. An emphasis has always been placed on athletics, but now it is nice to see the academic achievers 'strut their stuff ; — “I learned about things I'd nev- er even heard of before; — and from an adult chaperone Driving back to Big Lake the students continued to talk about the questions and answers ... I do believe it was very beneficial for us and at a minimal cost.” 61 The Class of ’85 Darin Agncw Dcann Barnett Kirk Boos Jeff Eckholm Linda Gramscy Diane Alcott Rick Baumgartner Jim Compton Ken Finnc Alona Habcgcr Sheri Angell Kris Beaulieu Chcri Coyle Mark Gabrielson Kim Habcrman Morten Arneson Linda Bielinski Sue Dye Jeff Geislcr Mark Hagen Erik Arthur Ken Bocnish Missy Earncy Penny Gotzian Denny Hipsag Juniors Korccn Johnson Mike Juhl Barry McLoulh Colleen Patzoldt Brian Rasmussen Michelle Johnson Tim Juhl Barb Meyer Bren Peters Janet Rath Paul Johnson Kevin Kampa Tom Nali Corrine Petersen Shelly Schuellcr Tim Johnson Phil Kollar Dave Olson Andy Pittman Justin Shroyer Mike Jones John McKusick Deanna Olson Leona Provcnchcr Sonia Simoneau 63 Juniors The Class of ’86 l.isa Lvcnscn Jocllc Faunce Jody Fisher Ricky Flicck Brett Fowler Kari Hansmann Lisa Flansen Brad Hayes Doug Hayes Jody Hirman Julie Hollenbeck Denise Johnson Theresa Johnson Kim Juhl Kerry Kampa Tina Kopponen Terri Lally Cleston Lange Jim Lavrenz Traci Lemonds 65 Sophomores Gary Lindsey Jayne l.umley John Lut ke Terri Lynas Jeff McConnell Sean McElhone Lynn McGowan Greg McGuiggan Mary Meyer Chantcllc Mitchell Bob Morafka Troy Moshicr Scott Nocton Sheila Olson Bill Paulsen Melinda Pl ak Ted Provcncher Jeff Putnam Pam Rasmussen Cliff Rootcs Tanya Rose Kevin Ryan Rhonda Schippcr Jeanette Scott Wayne Simoncau V 66 Sophomores Matt Hill Ed Spencer Todd Teige Doug Lanz Dan Syverson Lori Trom CoMccn LaVa||ey Julie Melek Dorie Thramcr The Class of ’87 Jenny Aasen Sarah Arthur Brian Barager Tammy Benker David Biasing Keith Allen Stephanie Backlund Tracy Battin Veronica Birman Leslie Boros Freshmen Audra Fisher Jennifer Fisher Tcrric Fisher Deanna Flemming Chris Garman Brenda Danielson Bob Dcllc Jerry Eliason Robert Engvall Chandler Farr Ricky Bouley Tina Braun Melanie Burma William Coyle Carrie Dahlkc Anna Gramsey Bruce Greer Karla Gruber Crystal Gulbranson Cam Habeger 68 Jim Halvorson Danny Hansmann Robert Hanson Ty Hcngcmuchlc Jennifer Hirman Freshmen Lisa Hoi tan Becky Jacobsen Beth Johnson Brian Johnson l.isa Johnson Mike Johnson Kari Lange Krissy l.cmonds Paul Loven Misty Ludens Renae Lut ke Teri McGowan Mike MeGuiggan Lora McMullen David Miller Todd Moffitt Tom Moffitt Koric Monson Chris Moschkau Scott Moshicr Darren Nielsen Michele Nielsen Bonnie Patzoldt Brad Pederson Dana Peters 69 Freshmen i! 4 k ft Ur, Bonnie Peterson Eric Petersen Kim Peterson Bob Putnam Allen Rossberg Tim Rudlong Brad Saari Paula Shonka Karen Simoneau Steve Smallish Michele Smith Danika Spaulding Darrik Spaulding Michelle Spencer Not Pictured: Ronda Eggersgluss Tom Kcskc Kathy Meyer Bcv Olson Darold Othoudt Dave Peterson Chris Sanders Mike Stein Jill Sularz Chuck Trom Jack Vogt 70 Tammce Walraven Laura White Rodrigo Zamorano Angie Ziaskas The Class of ’88 Row 1. Mr. Hinrichs has enjoyed his years in Big Lake and will miss the students, the ringing of the bells, and all that goes along with teaching. “Kids,” says Cal, “Haven't changed over the years. Although, they do seem to have more money today.” Cal’s lifestyle will not change much from when he was teaching. He'll still rise early in the morning and do the things he does all summer long — only now he will be doing them all year long. Those activities include building, restoring old cars, ice fishing and more. He plans on traveling when his wife, Dorothy, retires in about two years. Best Wishes, Cal .. . We'll miss you!!! Mr. Luukkonen Retires Mr. Lloyd Luukkonen, Superintendent of Schools for the Big Lake District, retired this year. Mr. Luukkonen has been employed in the education field for 38 years. Mr. Luukkonen came to Big Lake in 1956 as superintendent. While at Big Lake, he also taught a variety of classes including science and social studies. He was at Big Lake approximately ten years before he “got out of the classroom. When asked if he enjoyed teaching, he says, “Yes, if that is the only job. But, when it’s combined with being a principal it becomes very difficult. He feels that students today, especially in the last few years, are taking high school more seriously. They are beginning to realize that an education beyond high school does make a difference in their future. After retiring, he and his wife, Elizabeth, plan on traveling a little and spending more time at their cabin in northern Minnesota. He says, “I'll play it one day at a time.” He assures us that he won’t forget all the friends he has made while at Big Lake and we can expect to see him at many Big Lake events. Thanks for your dedication ... we’ll miss you. 1st Row, L to R: Barb Bristow. English; John Muir, Social Studies; Jim Hancc. Jr. High Math; Carol Olson, Sr. High English; John Bruns. Health Phy.
