The week started off with Monday being jersey and hat day, buttons went on sale, and the Mr. and Miss Hush contest started. Mike VanHee and Tammy Johnson were crowned reigning king and queen during Mon- day evenings coronation which was set to the theme Looking to the Future . Coronation was preceded by an early evening volleyball game with Elk River. Tuesday was dress-up day and the volleyball team had another game, this time at Maple Lake. The stu- dents and faculty wore their favorite color on Wednesday, the student-faculty volleyball games were held, and slaves, consisting of various students and teachers, were sold. The volleyball team trav- eled to Rockford to beat the Rockets in two games on Thursday. The slaves carried out duties issued by their owners and everyone wore their favorite sweat- shirt. Friday was the traditional blue and gold day, carnations went on sale, and an exciting pepfest was held in the afternoon. At the pepfest the Sopho- mores were judged to have the best poster in the poster contest and winners of the Mr. and Miss Hush contest were announced. Maple Lake arrived to play our Hornets in a rousing game of football and the traditional dance followed the game. 8 15 Sno-Daze Sno-Daze '83 began Monday night with Coronation. The Sno-Daze candidates were dressed in the traditional for- mal attire. Kevin and Angie were crowned King and Queen and reigned over the week's activities. Monday's activities also included Ski-Sweater and Leg Warmer day' and a Girls Basketball game between Eden Valley-Watkins. Tues- day was 'Class Day', all the classes had different things to dress-up in. The Wrestlers greeted Becker and treated their parents to a win on what was 'Parents' Night'. The Boys Basketball and the Gymnastics teams traveled to Sartell and Rockford. Wednesday was Basketball games between the classes' and a 'Slave Auction' was held. Thursday was 'Grub Day’, and 'Slaves perform day.' Fri- day was the traditional 'Blue and Gold Day', with an excit- ing pepfest that got everyone fired up for the game against Maple Lake. The Sno-Daze dance followed the game with music provided by Valhalla. After all the activities during the week one could say we had a PERFECT week. Mary Krai. Ray Watson. Nettie Danzl. Other highlights during the season included the Sar- tell Invitational tournament. At the tournament Big Lake placed 4th overall, which is the best they have ever done at a highly competitive invitational. All- conference for the season went to Pam Stein and Nancy Aschnewitz; second team went to Angie John- son and Sheri Angell. Big Lake's Volleyball program also had two other great accomplishments. The seventh grade team won the conference invitational tournament held at Big Lake and the B team had a 5-2 season which placed them third in the B squad conference stand- ings. Both teams prepared for sudden death. The Hornets won the coin toss and elected to go on defense. After start- ing on the 10 yd. line and being tackled for a 9 yd loss, the Preps scored on a pass into the deep corner of the end zone. The extra point kick was good — St. Johns led 7-0. Now the Hornets turn to try and score. Lining up in a Power I formation QB Rob Aasen faked to Mike VanHee and threw a pass into the end zone in the direction of receivers Brian Folkens and Kevin Loegering. Both Hornets jumped into the air. with Loegering coming down with the ball TOUCHDOWN BIG LAKE! The scoreboard flashed the story Preps 7 Big Lake 6. Now for the all important extra point. The Hornets needing 2 pts to win. set up in their well known spread extra point play indicating a pass was in the works. St. John's called time out to discuss proper cover- age. Both teams lined up again as the referee put the ball in play, Big Lake called time out as tension mounted. Again the ball was put into play. The snap went not to the QB as everyone suspected but to FB Ray Watson who sprinted to his right for the goalline. The Preps were caught by surprise but quickly recovered and two linebackers met Watson at the goal line, but Watson was not to be denied today as he blasted through the defenders for the score. The players and fans erupted as the scoreboard flashed the final score Hornets 8 Preps 7. great way to end the season! The spirited Hornets were captained by 3 year starters Mike Van- Hee and Ray Watson as well as big Tom Wicklace at tackle and Kevin Loegering at Wingback. VanHee led the team in rushing with 589 yds. Loegering with pass receiving for 212 yds. Watson led the team in tackles with 110 and defensive points worth 303. Wicklace led the team in offensive point chart totals with 169. The Hornets were known throughout the conference for a hard hitting, blitzing defense and a power running game. Mike VanHee was selected to first team All Conference at running back and second team linebacker. Wick- lace was chosen to the second team at both offensive and defensive tackle. 22 J V Row 1 (L to R) Wayne Simoneau. Brett Fowler. Paul Johnson. Bill Wilts. Andy Pittman. Money was raised with pledges from a Dance-a-thon held at ERHS. and both teams had fun performing together to the routine “HEART ATTACK . A new look was the main emphasis for the Big Lake Lakettes this year. During Football Homecoming and many Basketball games, the danceline showed off brand new uniforms. A sense of pride was felt by those who wore the uniforms as well as by those who watched. The Lakettes had much direction and leadership with five seniors making up the largest part of the line: Mary Krai. Nettie Danzl. Angie Johnson. Tammy Johnson, and Pam Stein. Pam Stein was also the captain during the season and has been on the line for four years, beginning as a freshman on up. Congratulations to a year with many accomplishments. 24 CHEERLEADERS Once again, the Big Lake Hornets’ Cheerleading squads performed consistently well throughout the school year. The football squad was led by veteran cheerleader Patti Haling, and Junior Kathy Johnson. The squad's majority consisted of four new freshman faces; Lisa Hansen, Jayne Lumley. Mary Meyer, and Julie Yetzer. The basketball squad had the experience of Lisa Hansen and Janie Bouley. The other members were new to the squad: Deb Bebo. Diane Bower, Ann Sularz, and Lori Trom. A junior high squad was added to the program and consisted of three eighth graders and three seventh graders. Many compliments were received from students, staff, and parents on the successful performances of all the squads. Top Left: FOOTBALL CHEER- LEADERS: Row 1, L to R, Ju- lie Yetzer. Teri McGowan Girls Basketball The 1982-83 Basketball team showed improvement in many areas such as team unity, defensive play, hustle, and dedication. They demonstrated a super attitude and played with a lot of heart throughout the season. The team regrets that they will be losing this years Seniors, Pam Stein, Anna-Karin Lingham. Mary Krai, and Robyn Fisher. Pam was a key re- bound er and Anna demonstrated what a willingness and desire to learn can do for a person. Mary was the spark plug” of the team and will be missed for her enthusiasm, positive attitude, and hustle. Robyn who was nicknamed Wrong Way early in her basketball career finally learned to play the Right Way and earned the well deserved recognition of an All- Conference player. Best of luck to all the Seniors. It was said toward the end of the season that we were improving but would we reach our potential by the end of the year, or would we run out of games? Probably the best game of the season was our tour- nament victory over Royalton. But then, drained mentally and physically we lost to Becker the runner-up team in the District, ending our season. Congratulations to all the seniors: they will be missed next year. Special recognition goes to Brian Folkens who was chosen second team all-conference and Tom Wicklace who was chosen 1st team all-conference. 28 JUNIOR VARSITY Row 1.1 to r Bill Paulsen. Missy Earney, a sopho- more and Joelle Faunce, a freshman, led their team in both leadership and team points, being the only two upperclass- men on the team. Other team members included three eighth graders: Beth Johnson, Kathy Meyer, and Korie Mon- son, along with one seventh grader: Patty Aschnewitz. Despite being a very young team, they started scoring in the 80's and finished the season in the 100's. At Sub-Regions Big Lake scored 106.6 which is the highest team total ever scored by this young BL gymnastic team! Also at Sub-Re- gions Kathy Meyer placed 9th on beam. Jill Sularz 12th in the all-around category. Thus, these three girls represented Big Lake at Regions with the highest finish being Joelle on beam, placing 7th, and 9th in all-around, scoring a personal best of 30 points. The Big Lake B squad, almost entirely made up of sev- enth graders, had a very respectable 4-7 season, starting out as a team in the 50's and ending in the high 70 s. The Big Lake Gymnasts have some promising seasons ahead, and some terrific meets to watch, if these gymnasts stick togeth- er during their high school years! Varsity: L to R Missy Earney. Wrestling as a sport has wedged its foot into the door of competitive- ness. As a team the Hornets only won one match but were able to be very close in most of their meets. It's been a long haul but as the sport grows in Big Lake we find that our opponents no longer expect an easy victory but realize that if they don't wrestle to the best of their ability a victory is not theirs. We are a solid competitive team with bright expectations for next year. As a team we lose just one senior and with a returning nucleus of some very fine wrestlers the BL Wrestling team will continue its climb towards winning seasons. Individual wrestlers who had outstanding seasons: Mike VanHee. Co- Captain. Sr.. 138-145 lbs. 14-6-1. Mike had 2nd best record in BL history; placed 4th or better in three invitational tournaments, was 4th at Dist. and was a Region 7A entrant. Mike was a fine leader and will be greatly missed. Steve Gruber, Co-Captain, Jr., Hwt. Hon. Mention All-Conf.. 18-6. Steve had the best season ever for a BL wrestler. He placed 1st at the Maple Lake Trny., 2nd at the Holdingford Trny., 2nd at Dist. and 6th at Regions. This was the highest place finisher at Regions in BL wrestling history. Tim Juhl, Sop., 138-145. Hon. Mention All-Conf., 11-11-1. 4-1 conf. record. Tim is a hard working solid wrestler with the promise of big things next year. Russ Lumley. Jr.. 119-126, 12-11. Region entrant. 4th at Dist. Russ will have an outstanding senior year due to his raw ability and outstanding attitude. Doug Muir, Jr., 167, 11-14. Region entrant. 3rd in Dist.. 3rd in St. Cloud Cathedral Trny.. 4th at Maple Lake Trny. Doug who was 0-15 two years ago has improved to a 23-25 record for the last two seasons. I see Doug as a big winner for us next season. With the nucleus of talent returning and the attitude that these fine young men have shown, the outlook for wrestling at Big Lake looks bright. 32 m.9 1 I Won! 2 The thrill of victory. 3. Coach Muir Boys Track It was a cool wet spring, nevertheless the Boys Hornet Track Team had another fine season. Led by seniors Pete LeVoir. Ray Watson. Mike VanHee. Chuck Poirier and Jerry Lytle the Hornets finished in the middle of both the Conference and District Meets. Injuries kept the team from finishing higher as Mike VanHee suffered a hamstring pull midway through the season and sophomore standout Phil Kollar was unable to compete due to open heart surgery. Individual highlights include a new school re- cord in the pole vault (12'6 ) by LeVoir and Pete also won the School Decathalon for the second time in Avon. Ray Watson was Conference Cham- pion in the 100 meter dash (11.3) and the long jump (20'5 ). Ray was also District Long Jump Champion. Both Pete and Ray advanced to the Region 5A Meet in three events. Many other mem- bers of the team compiled personal records over the season and Coach Muir was very pleased with the effort made by every member. 34 Varsity Track: Row 1, L to R: Denise Bebo. The majority of the team was made up of seventh graders who competed at both the Junior High and Varsity level. The seventh grade team did very well this year by taking first at all the Junior High Meets. The Varsity team, however, lacked the depth and overall experience to score well as a team but in their own individual events they showed a lot of improvement. Deb Asplund broke the school record in the mile for a personal best at the Monticello Meet. At the Dis- trict Meet almost everyone improved their times or distances. Robyn Fisher qualified for the Region Meet at Wa- conia despite an injury she had two weeks before. At the Region Meet Ro- byn threw the shot put 34'2 which earned her a fourth. Robyn's super atti- tude and athletic abilities will definitely be missed by next years team. 36 Varsity Baseball; Row 1. L to R Andy Noble — batboy. Kevin loegermg, Mike Hance. Paul Stem. Once the games started so did the wind. Twenty-five to thirty mile per hour winds were not uncommon. The weather was wild and so was our pitching, fielding and hitting. The last two weeks of the season everything came under control — the weather, the pitchers, the fielders and the hitters. For the second year in a row we started playing good baseball a little too late. However, better late than never. Next year a better start is at the top of the list for an even more successful season. Congratulations and good luck to Kevin Loegering. All-Conference; and Mike Hance 2nd Team All-Confer- ence. Spring sports started out with the weather not cooperat- ing very well, and the girls softball team spent many hours inside. The varsity team was a very young and inexperienced team with only six returning letter winners making up the nucleus. Gail Ramthun was the only senior heading up the list, and spent most of the season as Big Lake's main pitcher. Nancy Aschnewitz and Missy Earney also helped out in that department (all three being rookie pitchers). A major dis- appointment was the loss of Rhonda Danzl, a key outfielder and number two batter, who was out almost the entire sea- son with a severe knee injury. End of the season statistics had Sheri Angell making the All-Conference selection and Tracy Stein being chosen as Second-Team Honorable Mention. Sheri and Tracy are class- mates in the 1 Oth grade, which is quite an honor to receive at such a young age. Besides varsity level ball. Big Lake had its biggest turnout ever for softball this season. Deb Hauge coached the B Team Girls, and Gwen Brenteson was added to coach the junior high girls. (ft fv B Team: Row 1. I Never Saw Another Butterfly was a great deal of work for all the students who participated. The play is the story of Raja Englander- ova. an actual survivor of Terezin. Throughout the play the audience meets the members of Raja's fam- ily and her companion prisoners in Terezin. The theme of the play — the will for survival — is repeat- ed by several of the characters. Honza (Bruce Fol- kens) and Raja (Danika Spaulding) symbolize the many young couples who fell in love while in the camps and were separated by death. The play was meant to educate and inform our audience of the horror of the holocaust and to allow the audience to see real people in a real situation. One of the high- lights for the cast was a visit by the playwright, Ce- leste Rapsanti. The intensity that Ms. Raspanti pro- jected to the cast tremendously aided with the production. 45 s p e e c h Region 5A Speech Participants: Row 1. L to R Nancy Aschnewitz. Joy Sularz. Julie Springer Row 2: Michele Neilsen. Tammy Benker. Deb Asplund, Doug Larson. Ken Fmne, Ann Sularz The Speech Team has a very suc- cessful season even though we were a young team. We began by attending five invitational speech tournaments in Eden Valley-Watkins, Little Falls. Foley. Princeton and Monticello on five successive Saturdays. At each of these tournaments at least one member of the team won an award. At the Central Minnesota Conference Speech Tourna- ment the progress of the team really began to show. Julie Springer. Ann Su- larz. Ken Finne. Deb Asplund. Nancy Aschnewitz. Doug Larson. Danika Spaulding. Tammy Benker. and Joy Su- larz all placed. The CMC Speech Tour- nament was held in Big Lake on April 5. On April 8. the speech team traveled to Royalton for the District 19A speech contest. Of the 16 people entered from BL. six advanced to participate in the Region 5A tournament and three were alternates. (See Picture Above). Of those six. Ann Sularz advanced to the State Speech Tournament which was held in Shakopee on April 16. Ann placed sixth at the State Speech Tour- nament and was the first student in at least 10 years to advance to the State Speech Contest from Big Lake Schools. Speech Team: Row 1. L to R: Laura White. The members of both the Junior and Senior High Choirs worked and rehearsed very hard to prepare music for various con- certs throughout the year, including the Fall. Winter, Ridgedale, and Spring Choir Concerts. Members of the Senior High Choir also participated in Solo and Ensemble Contest at both the District and State level. Out of 33 entries. BLHS vocalists received 16 Superior Ratings at the District level held at Holding- ford High School. These performers received the op- portunity to participate at the State level where we received ten Superior Ratings out of fifteen entries at St. Benedict's. Included among these Superior Ratings were the Girl's Triple Trio and The Melody Lakers Swing Choir who also participated at the Swing Choir Clinic at the University of Wisconsin, River Falls. The Senior High Choir received a Superior Rating at the District level for large group vocal contest held at St. Ben's. As the year drew to an end the Choirs and Soloists performed at the Fine Arts Festival and Banquet. Jazz- Pop Concert, and finally Graduation. The year was a very successful one with a special thanks to those who participated. 48 Accompanists: Row 1: Tina Kopponen. Sharon Werner. Cindi McConnell. Row 2 Lori Trom. With her arrival at the airport, our compounded excitement reached its climax! Aside from mispronouncing her name, we found Anna-Karin to be exactly as anticipated — a delightful addi- tion to our Larson clan. She has genuinely returned our love, willingly blended into our busy schedule, graciously accepted our assorted pets, unassum- ingly enriched our Swedish heritage and enthusiastically shared our fire-wood hauling. We will always remember her persistent desire to use and improve her American-English, her negative reaction to peanut butter and her positive acceptance of banana cream pie. In school she accepted the discipline of athletics, the enjoyment of music and the challenge of classroom activity. She has been a friend to many, and those friendships will return with her to her homeland. We would like to keep her, but her parents lent her to us for only the school year. “Tach sa mychet (thanks so much) to everyone who gave our daughter” many unforgettable pages in her personal history book. —Kaydi Larson, Anna’s American Mom Lloyd Luukkonen, Superintendent Linda Anderson, Adm. BETH MAURER When I got a proof right on a test in Geometry, it was the only one I ever got right in the class But. seriously. I don't think there is one moment in particular, instead I would have to say I would remember how friendly the stu- dents and how friendly the teachers got in my senior year I think the friendliness the teachers and stu- dents showed is something I will re- member for a very long time CHUCK POIRIER: I remember most eighth grade math and my teacher. Mr. Hance In addition to teaching math. Mr Hance motivated me and gave me the will to learn, which has helped me in other classes He was patient and he cared I appreciate and respect him as a man and as a teacher DONNA FISHER: The best times I had were when there were concerts, football games, and dances because I got to so- cialize with everyone and get to know everyone better They also were just a really great time. PAM STEIN: What I will remember most after I am gone are the teachers. They are a real rarity They put an enormous amount of effort into their teaching like taking time to involve themselves and make the learning fun They are not afraid to take a personal interest in the students and they care about the indi- vidual person. The experiences I have had are truly going to be missed ROBYN FISHER: The one thing I will never forget was the time I made all- conference in basketball. I practiced everyday on the plays and defensive manuevers My teammates and coach really helped me along through the sea- son Without the help of them I don't think I would have made it 84 MARY A. KRAL: The times I will always remember are those spent during lunch in Ms Roberg's room. It's a place I could go and just sit to enjoy the things around me We would tell jokes. EAT. and discuss unusual matters. It was fun to let loose and forget about everything else. Also, it was nice to have such a great person to listen and share the times with me. Thanks Ms Roberg LISA ANTHONY: My junior and senior years have been the most memorable to me because I have been drawn clos- er to my friends and teachers For ex- ample Mr Foehrenbacher taught me things that just can't be found in books. He teaches to the individual. PETE LEVOIR: I don't have one specific moment that is especially memorable to me. there are many of them The most recent one being my breaking the school record in the pole vault. That's something I'll never forget. I have many fond memories from this school They will always stay with me. BRIAN FOLKENS: My most memorable moment is not really a moment at all. My moment consisted of many mo- ments in Big Lake High School Athlet- ics In the three sports that I participat- ed m I have gamed some valuable lessons not to mention some lasting friendships These extra-curricular ac- tivities have made a fantastic memory that I will never forget I would like to thank the coaches for their special con- tributions m my life. JON BALDWIN In a word I'd say Swing Choir But that is two words Choir in general was the funnest thing I've ever done There have been good times and bad times, but one time sticks in my mind It was wrapping tape arund Fiskum's keys to form a ball (which is a l-o-n-g story know by the choirs of 81-82 and 82- 83) To any choir student who reads this Ask Mr Fiskum about this dur- ing choir and take a day off PS If Mr Fiskum's not around ask Orville What was your most memorable moment re- lated to a school activity or school in general? 85 89 90 91 92 MONOA MOON MOTOR SALES, Inc.
