1982 LAKER BIG LAKE HIGH SCHOOL BIG LAKE, MM. VOLUME 24 WE SURVIVED THE WINTER OF '82 Dr. Dan DEDICATION The Senior class of 1982, and the Annual Staff is proud to dedicate the '82 Laker to Mr. Dan Thiele. Mr. Thiele has been teaching Science and Biology at Big Lake for the past five years. Although he is a teacher, he is a friend, too. More important is the fact that Mr. Thiele is always willing to listen, take time, and help the students and others with any prob- lem that they may have. We would like to take this opportunity to say Thank-You for doing a fine job of teaching and for being a good friend to all of us. 3 SENIOR HALL OF FAME “Most Gullible” Teacher’s Pet” LuAnn Curtis Rick Beaulieu Laura Hengemuehle Steve Meltzer Most Likely to Succeed Sue Hayes Dale Hance “Friendliest” Julie Pavlik Ed King “Best Dressed Jean Hurlbert Matt Bocmsh Favorite Teacher: Mr. Thiele Favorite Movie: Stripes Favorite Place to Eat: McDonald's “Biggest Threat to Pedestrians' Ronda Hansen Scott Rudlong “Nicest Smile Judy Swiiala Gordy Scon 4 “Talks the Most Says the Least” Denise McDouall Chad Erbe “Most Talented” Julia Reed Sc Ron Moshier “Biggest Flirt” Barb Forsythe Sc Tim Aschnewitz “Class Jocks” Synde Miller Curt Angell “Most Likely to Take Home to Parents” Wcndi Brenteson Sc Allen Thomas “Shyest” Robin Olson Sc Doug Hayes “Class Paranoids” Mary Kollar Sc Paul Faust 5 Valedictorian Saluta torian Dale J. Curt Angell and Judy Switala were crowned King and Queen and reigned over the weeks activi- ties. Monday was also Dress-up Day, the beginning of the Mr. and Miss Hush Con- test and buttons went on sale. Tuesday was Urban Cowboy Cowgirl Day. It was the guys football Day and we had a volleyball game against EVW. Wednesday was T- Shirt Day. In the morning, festivities in- cluded Anything Goes (the Seniors won!) and the annual Senior Slave Auction. Thursday was Class Theme Day and Slave Day. It was also the girls football day and we had a volleyball game against St. Johns. Friday, the traditional Blue and Gold Day with an exciting and eventful pepfest in the afternoon. Carnations went on sale. Seniors had Best Poster, and the Juniors won the Poster Contest. The Football victory against EVW was followed by the tradi- tional Homecoming Dance. All-in-all we had a PERFECT week. 15 SNO- DAZE Sno-Daze ’82 began Monday night with Coro- nation. A tradition was changed this year as the Sno-Daze candidates were decked in Ski Sweat- ers instead of the traditional formal attire. Ron and Becky were crowned King and Queen and reigned over the weeks activities. Monday also consisted of “Dress-Up Day” and a tough over- time loss against Kimball for the Girls Basketball team. Tuesday was “T-shirt Hat day and we had a Teacher Student Feud Competition. The Gymnasts and the Boys Basketball teams trav- eled to Becker STMA. The Gymnasts brought home a super victory over Becker and the Basket- ball team came home with a disappointing loss. The wrestlers also had a disappointing loss at home. Wednesday was “Slave day and Bib day . Thursday was class day, all the classes had differ- ent things to dress-up in. The best way to describe Friday is “SNOW”. Everyone showed up for school in the traditional Blue Gold, everyone was getting excited for the big game and pepfest. Due to one of our many winter snow storms Fri- day was cut short. Everyone was sent home short- ly into 3rd. hour therefore all the evenings activi- ties were cancelled. Sno-Daze Candidates: (LtoR)Sue Hayes. Russ Bring. Becky Meyer, Ed King. The football squad had a lot of ex- perience in their four Seniors: Toni Flicek, Laura Hengemuehle, The- resa Hogfeldt, and Lori Iverson. The basketball squad carried over from football with Sue Meyer and Kim Peacock. Their experience really showed as they became the squad's leaders. Pepfests were few, the football season saw three of them with Homecoming as the brightest. The basketball season saw their pepfests dashed by the snow. 1. The 1981 Football season saw the Hornets very competitive and involved in many very close games. The season started with two heartbreaking losses to non-conference foes Onamia and St Michael. The Hornets had chances to win both games in the closing seconds, but victory was denied. The seasons first win came over highly touted Kimball with a hard fought 14-6 win. After another down to the wire loss at Maple Lake the Hornets defeated EV-W for a Homecoming win and the highlight of the season. In this game it was Big Lake who denied the Eagles bid to tie the score late in the game. Aided by two pass interference calls, EV-W had 12 plays to score from inside the Big Lake 10 yd. line, but the Hornets rose to the occasion with an outstanding goal line defense to preserve the Homecoming win. Big Lake closed its season by playing a very tough game against eventual state champions, Holdingford. Trailing only 7-0 at half-time several B.L. fumbles gave the Huskers a lead that the Hornets could not overcome. The Hornets finished 2nd in rushing yardage in the conference the highest finish ever in that category for Big Lake in recent history. Senior Captains Angell. King Borchardt. and Aleckson provided some great leadership and Jerome Kollar had an outstanding season leading our squad in both offensive and defensive point totals and received All-Conference as well as Tom Wicklace and Mike VanHee who received Honorable Mention. Although we lost more games than we won our team had a reputation for being a hard nosed team of real hitters and we had a lot of fun. 22 8TH GRADE. Row 1: Jeff Putnam. Greg MeGuiggan. Brent Gorman. Synde Miller was All-Conference and Wendi Bren- teson was Honorable Mention. Besides the normal season schedule Big Lake par- ticipated in the Sartell invitational and hosted the 7, 8 and 9th grade conference invitational, with the Big Lake 9th grade team winning their invitational The B squad had a very successful season with a 3-6 conference record, and 5-10 overall. Both the B squad and the 9th grade team were coached by Deb Hauge, Scott Anderson had the 8th grade team and Mary Ann Herbst had the 7th grade team. 24 B-SQUAD: (L lo R) Row 1: DcAnn Barnett MGR . The Big Lake wrestling squad had a lot to be proud of during the 1981- 1982 season. This young team in its 3rd year as a varsity sport showed more than 100% improvement. Each wrestler advanced greatly in strength and skill as the year went on. The Team was led by its three captains, Russ Bring, Tim Aschnewitz and Mike VanHee. Unfortunately Russ and Tim were stopped short of their goals due to knee injuries. However both were good leaders and contributed greatly to the success of the team. Mike had an excellent year as a Jr. and can be expected to improve on that next year when he will once again captain the team. Three wrestlers earned the right to participate in the Regional Tourney. Ken Boenish placed 4th in the district as a ninth grader. If he continues on his present pace of improvement he could be Big Lakes 1st Region Champ. Joel Aleckson also took a 4th. Joel didn't start until x-mas so he had a slow start. But Joel proved his ability by reversing 2 earlier losses to opponents in the District Tournament and earning a trip to the Region Championships. Steve Gruber also had a good season. He finished 3rd in the district and earned the most team points of all the wrestlers. For this Steve was named as one of the 82-83 co-captains. 26 Tough and Mighty Seniors. Joel. Russ and Tim. B-SQUAD: (L to R) Row 1: Ed Spencer. Rick Bouley. Mike MeGuiggan. Row 2: Paul Faust MGR. As far as conference stats — Big Lake as a team was I st on bars and beam, 2nd on vault and floor. For the past two years Big Lake has tied Maple Lake and Sartell for the conference title but lost to Sartell this year by .15 thus taking 2nd place instead. All-Conference went to Senior Sue Hayes and 8th grader Joelle Faunce. Honorable Mention went to Seniors Mel Skoog and Ronda Hansen. As far as Post Season Meets. Big Lake placed 3rd at Sub- Regions (losing to St. Michael by .65) with the following 4 gymnasts advancing to Regions — Sue Hayes, Mel Skoog, Julie Yetzer, and Joelle Faunce. Individual high was Sue Hayes on bars who received a 2nd place medal at Sub-Regions, and placed 6th at Regions. Varsity’s record was 8-2 conference, 11-5 overall and B-squad 7-3 conference, 9-7 overall. B-SQUAD: (L to R) 1st Row: Korie Monson, Missey Barney, Lori Trom, Beth Johnson. Michelle Hansen. There was improvement, noted by the coaches, and even though our record was nothing to brag about there were some heroics and high points along the way. The whole team should always remember the night we went to Maple Lake and played a state rated team and performed far above expectations. Next year the absence of this years Seniors Good Ole Boy” Jeff Borchardt, “Jobber Rob Ramthun and “Stosh Dale Hance will be felt. Dale Hance also deserves recognition for being chosen to the All-Con- ference second team and doing a fine job as this years captain. Best of luck to all the Seniors. Most stu- dents participated in several speech invitationals which were held on Saturdays and also partici- pated in the Central Minnesota Conference Speech Tournament and the District 19A Speech Con- test. All of the speech team mem- bers participated in the District Speech Contest and did fairly well. Ann Sularz, a sophomore in the category of non-original oratory, placed third at the District Contest and participated in the Regional Speech Contest. In general, this was a successful year and all look forward to a better year to come. THESPIANS — The Internation- al Thespian Society is an organiza- tion which honors secondary school students for their outstand- ing achievements in theatre. As usual, the Sr. Band participated in playing at the football and basketball games, but that was just the start. The Band helped break the record for the Largest Marching Band in the world. For the 2nd time we participated at Band day and watched the Minnesota Gophers win. Then we made another trip to the U of M and the University’s Marching Band performed an indoor concert. We had our usual Holiday concert with the help from the Sr. Band, Jr. Band, Cadet Band, Sr. Choir, and Jr. Choir. This year the District solo-ensemble contest was held at Royalton, 23 out of 38 people starred, including, for the first time, our clarinet quintet and also for the first time. Jazz Band participated and starred. Six of the people plus Jazz Band got superior ratings at Slate Contest, held at St. Cloud State University. Large Group Band Contest was held at Monticello High School, we received 3 out of 6 stars. April started out exciting with the fantastic April Fools Concert put on by the Big Lake Sr. Band We had our traditional Fine Arts Festival and Jr Band. Cadet Band, Sr. Choir, Jr. Choir, and many others helped to provide entertainment for the evening. We had our Second Annual Fine Arts Banquet too. Jazz Band, Swing Choir, the first act of the 3-act play, and Ann Sularz’s famous, award winning speech all made the night something to remember. Sr. Band helped out at the Memorial Day Service, High School Graduation and marching in the Spud Fest and Sherburne County Fair parades. Brass Ensemble. 1st Row Mary Kollar. CHOIR Big Lake Choirs had a new look about them and that was the addition of a new choral director. His name is Mr. James Fiskum, a graduate from Be- midji State University. Mr. Fiskum picked up where Peggy Renner left off, and he did an excellent job. He’s the kind of director that has a lot of incentive and inspiration to get a choir our size up and going. To start the year off we had our Fall Concert with all choir members participating. While we were pre- paring for our annual choral performance at Ridge- dale in December where we performed twice that day, we were preparing for the Winter Concert at the same time. The choir students then got down to business by rehearsing for district contest. Big Lake brought home 18 out of 32 entry stars, including the Barbershop Boys and the Melody Lakers. With just enough time to breathe, we then pre- pared for Large Group Contest which was held at Monticello and we were able to bring back a District star rating. Not long after that, the District stars went on to State and we brought home 10 out of 18 entry stars, including the Melody Lakers. Some final activities and performances included the Fine Arts Festival and Banquet along with the final performance. Graduation. The Melody Lakers in action Tim, our “borrowed” son, brother and friend from Tokushima. Japan, has been a real learning and sharing experience for his friends and family in Big Lake. His ability to discuss his country with such knowledge and pride has been an example we all felt we should follow as Americans. Tim was a Geography enthusiast. He loved to study and show the knowledge he learned from others and through his studies. As anyone who knew him can testify to, Tim asked endless questions about everything, thereby keeping all of us on our toes! A typical yearbook meeting YEARBOOK As we put the finishing touches on our last page it is a relief to k.iow that another yearbook is once again complete. The long days of rushing for dead- lines are over for another year. A special “Thank You’ to many people who helped us when the going got rough. Nancy Aschnewitz for selling ads and typing. Synde Miller for selling ads. Ray Wat- son. Bruce Folkens. and Scott Flaycs for taking pictures when we so desperately needed them. And Tom Yetzer for his willingness to do whatever needed doing. A special “Thanks” to Bonnie Kemper for keeping our finances straight and for putting up with us running across the hall to get people on pictures identified. And finally a BIG “Thanks” to the rest of the yearbook staff for putting in so many hours. —Jean Flurlbert 1982 Yearbook Editor Even though we have examined our Laker many times, we still use it to go back in time. With our yearbook we can remember how it was to be in high school. We'll think how precious life was when we were younger and wish we were young again. Coming back to the present we have to find the right road to take. For some it may be easy, for others it could be indecision. At this young age we can see our mistakes and correct them instead of closing our minds. But we know we are always moving forward finding happiness along the way. not at the end of the road. — Author Unknown SPECIAL AWARDS I PRIM A FOWLER was selected as one of the 16 national finalists in the Great Model Search of TEEN Magazine. 2. Coach Scott Anderson The indoor season was a long one this year. Consequently the number of players dwindled before we got outside. Once we got outdoors everyones spirits picked up Hitting was a strong point this season. We had a three way race for the team batting title. Jim Stein .419, Troy Brenteson .404. Kevin Loegcring .338. Dale Hance finished close behind at .325. The regular season was a struggle with only 2 wins. However districts were encou- raging as we saved the best for last. The SwanviJIe fans were unforgettable, as eleven beat seven in the last inning. The Cathedral game though a loss was of championship caliber. Outstanding pitching, double-plays, outfielders throwing runs out, diving catches and good hitting were all a part of this game. The only piece missing was a hit at the right time. As the outdoor season neared a finish the Hornets made another fine showing by again finishing a strong 3rd in the CMC Outdoor Meet. The 1982 District 19A Track Meet proved to be one of the toughest District Meets ever held, and the Hornets were up to the task. Curt Angell advanced to the Region in four events; The 100, 200, Long Jump and 400 Relay. Other members of the 400 Relay Team were Mike VanHee. Paul Faust and Phil Kollar Kollar also advanced in the 100. In the Region 5A meet the 400 M Relay Team finished 3rd. but their time of 44.7 qualified them for the State Meet in Bloomington. Thirty-six years ago Mr. Strand began a career in educa- tion. He started as a math and science teacher, and in 1954 came to Big Lake High School as its principal. Through his twenty-seven years at Big Lake he has been teacher, disci- plinarian, athletic director and counselor He had a deep pride in our school, its students and faculty. He felt all students deserved a quality education and insured this by encouraging new class offerings and supporting special programs. He could often be found talking to students in the halls or sitting among them in the cafeteria. He made a special effort to know each student by name and worried as classes got larger and some of the personal contact was lost. His work did not end at fouro’clock each day. Mr. Strand was a “regular” at ball games, concerts, plays and other school events. He recognized and applauded the talents of students in special areas. He devoted many hours to their interests for their interests were also his. Perhaps we may forget the many details of his work, but we will not forget the man who, with patience and under- standing. showed us he cared. We wish him a retirement filled with happiness and the knowledge that he has given something special to thousands of students.
