2 DEDICATION Mrs. Marie Peterson has become, through her many years of teaching, a very dear person to many of us. We can't thank her enough for her beau tiful attitude toward life that seems to affect every- one she knows. She retired from teaching three times in her career, but she always came back because she still had more to give to others. She has been substitute teaching since 1971 and it's always a special day to have her for a sub. Most importantly, we would like to thank Mrs. Peterson for always being ready to help others. In 1950, she was called away from her job at the bank to come and teach because of a shortage of teachers. Since then, she's become more than a replacement for others-she is one special teacher and friend. The annual staff and the Class of '81 are proud to dedicate this, the 1981 Laker to Mrs. Mane Peterson. Teacher . . . Friend . . . Dave Swanson and Val Mertens were crowned King and Queen and reigned over the week's activities Monday was also Dress-Up Day, Drama and Speech Day and buttons went on sale. On Tuesday everyone was to dress up as an occupation. It was Annual Staff Day and Central Council Day and we had a volleyball game against Kimball in the evening. Wednesday was Clash Day and Music Day. In the morning, festivities included Anything Goes (the seniors won.) and the annual Senior Slave Auction. Thursday was Western Day and Ath- letic Day with a home victory against Rockford in volleyball. Friday, the traditional Blue and Gold Day with an exciting pepfest in the afternoon. Carnations went on sale, slaves followed their masters, and this was the day we recognized all students activities. We had a perfect week. The only thing we forgot to ask for, was a football victory. 14 Top left I surrender ” Top right: And the band played on.” Middle left What do you mean’ They are gone.” Middle right Cheerleader Support ” Bottom The wild and wooly seniors of our town Bottom right We are Definitely the Mighty Horn- ets ” BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS L to R Laura Hengemuehle Theresa Hogfeldt Kari Rasmussen. After two back-to-back winning seasons there was reason to believe a third was well within their reach However, fate did not see it that way. Injuries and two close losses prevented that goal from being reached. Sr RB Tim Kollar was injured during the sum- mer and saw little action. Greg Fischer was also ham- pered throughout the majority of the season with an in- jury. Close losses to Becker (6-0) and Maple Lake (14- 8) were key games in the season. Winning these two games would have meant a 5-4 record instead of a 3-6 record. This was the first year on our new field under the lights. The Hornets, employing a quick hurdle offense termed the Hornet Blitz , surprised and confused the big, physical St. John's Preps and defeated them 16-8, initiating the new field with a Big Lake win and provid- ing a high point for the season. Sr. Capt. Dave VanHee was selected to the All-Con- ference team as an offensive guard, and also set a new school record for tackles during a season with a com- bined solo-assist total of 140. Although we had hopes of a better record, the Horn- ets played tough, hard-nosed football and were com- petitive. Assistant Coach Deb Hauge had enough girls to form a first and second string. Varsity added on to their single setter offense with a specialization rotating game plan, since they too had a few more girls out for a fall sport. All nine varsity players were used on the team's offense and defense . . . with Terri Lemonds lead- ing the team's spiking, Laurie Peterson and Sue Hayes leading serving and Cindy Wojd heading up the setting department. Defensive saves were well spread out on a well-balanced team. The team fin- ished the season 7-7 overall and tied for fourth in the conference with a 2-4 record All conference honors went to Laurie Peterson while Dana West- rum and Cindy Wold were given honorable men- tion. Laurie, Dana and Cindy, the only three Sen- iors on the team, showed fine leadership as tri- captains. VARSITY VOLLEYBALL: Row 1 (L to R) Synde Miller. GYMNASTICS The Big Lake Girls' Gymnastic team had another very suc- cessful season. For the second year in a row, the Big Lake Gymnasts won the conference title and once again shared first place honors with Maple Lake and Sartell. Individually, Sue Hayes and Cindy Wold led the team with 364 and 352 overall varsity team points (of which 223 and 221 were conference points respectively). At the sub-region level, Cindy Wold placed 3rd on vault; Sue Hayes placed 2nd on bars, tied for 5th on vault and placed feth in the all-around category; Melaney Skoog tied for 11th place on the balance beam; and Julie Yetzer placed 12th on the uneven bars. All four girls advanced to the region level and did very well, with Mel Skoog placing 3rd on the balance beam enabling her to go on to State competition. Melaney is the first gymnast to ever represent Big Lake at the State Gymnasts Meet and she did an outstanding job, placing in the top ten, taking 9th place out of 21 Class A balance beam competitors All-confer- ence selections for the 80-81 season were: Sr. Cindy Wold, Jr. Sue Hayes and Jr. Mel Skoog. Honorable Mention went to Sr. Dawn Loven. The varsity squad had four Seniors: Chris Bouley, Dawn Loven, Cindy Wold and Manager Val Mertens. All seniors will be greatly missed because of their fine perfor- mances and leadership given, but especially Cindy Wold who has been with the team since 7th grade! The B squad, under the direction of Cindy Aubol, had an- other undefeated conference season of 8-0 and lost only one non-conference meet during the year for a 14-1 season record. We took some pretty tough knocks early, but through it all the team kept improving. By the halfway point in the season we were beginning to realize our potential. The team seemed to peak at the right time, just before the tournaments. We beat Kimball, Sartell and then played very well against a very good Eden Valley team. The bubble burst, however, when Sartell beat us in double overtime in the Sub-District Tourna- ment. The Hornet girls will look back on the 80-81 season and remember that it was a season where experience paid off by win- ning the games they were suppose to. The words team game really became mean- ingful because there was no truly out- standing individual. Each player learned their role on the team . . . whether it be scorer, ball handler, defensive player, or bench cheerer and each tried to be the best at it. They learned to trust and rely on each other to be successful. The Hor- nets were rewarded for their hard work with a third place finish in the tough Cen- tral Minnesota Conference and a 9-11 over-all record. Leading the team were Sr. Co-Captains and 4 year letterwinners Dana Westrum and Laurie Peterson. Peterson was the second leading all-time scorer in BLHS history with 981 pts. and was selected for the second year to the All-Conference team along with Jr. Terri Lemonds. We now have a membership of eighteen, who have shown outstanding participation in Big Lake High School's theatrical prod- uctions. Over half our troupe members attended the 1980 Minnesota State Thespian Con- ference which was held at St. Cloud State University, October 25, and was co-hosted by our troupe. Our 1980-81 troupe 582 officers were President Julia Reed, Vice-President Ron Moshier, and Secretary Julie Pavlik. Those three also applied for and were elected to the State Thespian Office of Pres- ident Julia, Vice-President Ron, and Publicity Director Julie. Their main state-level task this year was to meet monthly and plan the 1981 State Conference. Our troupe mem- bers attended the following per- formances at St. Cloud State as a group: HEDDA GABLER, THE ROBBER BRIDEGROOM, and MACBETH. Overall, we've had a very successful year with hope that in the future years we will continue to grow. Every month we held a Thespian meeting in which many troupe trips were planned and attend- ed by members to see various theatrical productions in this area. Perhaps in the near future when we mention the word “Thespian, we won't be met with a blank look and a WHAT? This is the year of firsts for the Instrumental Music Department. We started off the year by providing entertainment at three of the football games. We also (for the first time) participated in the Uni- versity of Minnesota's Band Day. It seemed all of a sudden the fall concert season was upon us( so we quickly designed a Fall Marching Band Concert and in mid-December we had the usual Holiday concert involving all the music groups, and the first performance of the new 7th Grade (Cadet) Band. January, February, and March were dotted with 17 Pep Band per- formances at various basketball games, and other important band events. Big Lake served as the host for the fourth annual District Massed Band Festival. This was also the time of year for District Solo and Ensemble Contest, which was held at Albany H.S. Eleven out of twenty performances received Superior ratings. March also saw the creation of a new Jazz Band program. After just four rehearsals, the new Jazz Band was able to play two numbers at the fifth annual April Fool's Concert. This year's AFC was really fun including the telethon for Old Band Directors. The overall record was 7 and 7 finishing third in the Conference. Inconsistency was a problem but for the most part the team was a balanced blend of seasoned veterans and enthusiastic, hustling underclassmen. All Conference picks were Cindy Wold and Dana Westrum with Sue Hayes and Vicki Davis receiving Honorable Mention, congratulations to these girls . . . and all. o CO VARSITY: Row 1 (I to r): Paul Faust, Bruce Folkens, Curt Angell, Dave VanHee, Jeff Huggett, Ed King, Brian Folkens, Row 2 (I to r): Coach Muir, Chuck Poirier, Randy Gramsey, Tad Hengemuehle, Doug Muir, Mike VanHee, Pete LeVoir, Coach Thiele. Some great individual successes and an above average team sums up the 1981 season. The Hornets scored well in every meet this year. Individually, some outstanding performances were turned in. The 400 Meter Relay team comprised of Mike VanHee, Curt Angell, Dave VanHee, and Jeff Huggett were District Champions and took either first or second in nearly every meet they ran in. Curt Angell consistantly placed high in the dashes and the long jump. Pete LeVoir scored highly in the pole vault as did Brian Folkens, both sophomores reached the 11 mark during the season. Chuck Poirier in his first track meet ever, broke the school record in the 2 mile and then broke his own record 5 times after that finishing with a time of 11.00:9. The most spectacular individual performances however were turned in by senior Jeff Huggett. Jeff broke Lyle Smiths records in the 100 meter dash and 200 meter dash that stood since the 1930's. Jeff was District Champion in both events and never had a finish below first place until the Region 5A meet. At the Region meet Jeff qualified for the State meet in both the 100 meter dash (11.1) and the 200 meter dash (22.6). Jeff became the 5th member of the Boys Track team to qualify for the State meet. At State Jeff barely missed qualifying for the finals in the 200 meter, but qualified for the finals in the 100 meter, and placed 4th in the State in that event. Jeffs future as a college sprinter at South Dakota State looks bright. 57 GIRLS TRACK VARSITY, ROW 1, L to R: Julie Yetzer, Nancy Aschnewitz, Sonia Simeneau, Deb Asplund, Kiirsten LaBau, Mary Meyer, Lisa Hanson, Mary Krai. Row 2: Coach Haskell, Coach Campbell, Shelly Klatt, Mary Kollar, DeAnn Barnett, Pam Stein, Holly Stolp, Laurie Peterson, Angie Johnson, Lynette Glover. V This years track team was one of the most competitive and talented in Big Lake history and enjoyed their most successful season of recent years. The Hornets were led by Senior Standout Laurie Peterson who finished her 6th letter year with an undefeated record in the discus. Laurie set a new school record of 117'3 in the Region, leading her team in scoring and earning a trip to the State Track Meet. Laurie placed 1st in all meets in both Disc and Shot except once during the regular season and earned the title of MVP. Other records were by Mary Kollar in the 200 M. Dash (27.9), Nancy Aschnewitz in the 1600 M. Run (6:10.3) and Kiirsten LaBau in the 3200 M. Run (12:37.3). There were many highlights of the season-including new uniforms, taking second in the indoor conference meet and being in the middle of all the action at their meets. The girls finished a strong 5th in Districts and sent Peterson, LaBau, and Shelly Klatt on to Regions. The team will sorely miss Peterson but there is a strong nucleus of underclassmen that should help make Big Lake's track future BRIGHT. 59 SCHOOL BOARD L to R: Ray Sundstrom, Charles Larson, Bill Middle- stadt, Richard Oltmanns, Carol Springer, Lloyd Luukkonen. Diane Gotzian, Jeff Borchardt, Ron Moshier Moonligr Paradise The big day had arrived at last-May 28, 1981. We were in complete control in the background; signing caps, pinning on flowers and joking around with people who had become a lot more than just 'acquaintances' in the last few years ... but then we found ourselves on stage, in the spotlight and that's when the tears and memories took over. Valedictorian Donna Le Voir and Salutatorian Tim Hayes delivered speeches on being individuals and our relationships with other people. The class was presented and were finally awarded their diplomas. As the reception line formed the tears began again-for then we had to say our last good-bye . . . 80 I feel that further education is a very im- portant tool to help a person make something of himself. As times get harder it will become increasingly important to be well educated in order to obtain a job. I plan to study aeronautical engineering in college. I believe that this will allow one to have an excellent chance at getting a rewarding career, Jack White It's really hard to realize tnat after all I; these years that I've been going to school, j I've finally done it. It's a great feeling to j have accomplished it; but yet it's also a scary feeling to start a life of my own. I pi to go to St. Cloud School of Nursing to get my registered Nursing Diploma. After my j schooling I'm tentatively planning to go out west to work. I know that where ever I go() I'll always remember all the good times I've had at BLHS. Karlene M itchei | It's hard to believe I'm graduated, this year went by too fast! I plan on attending South West State next fall. I hope the future that is in store for me is the happiness I can bring to others by my musical talents. Seeing eople dancing and enjoying themselves as I play in orchestras makes me feel good. Craig Ebel The plans for my future are to go to St. Cloud School of Nursing whereupon I will ei ve a degree for a 3 year registered nurse. After school I would like to work in a childrens hospital.
